The Philles are atop the NL East -- FOR NOW!

Are you blind, Bobby? I’ve been posting in every Phillies thread since opening day. I’ve been posting as much, if not more than dan (which is not to begrudge his Phillies Phandom, of course).

And, I don’t see any Moet. But, I see the Braves in the rearviewmirror. And that looks better to me.

Just another game against the Mets, huh? Maybe you didn’t realize you can lose a playoff series and then not actually be IN the World Series. Oh, wait. That happened last year. You see, Braves fans have been spoiled rotten of late. How many Braves fans even followed the team before 1991? If you could round up more than a bucketload, I’d be amazed. Since the games are shown on a nationwide cable network, most of them go just to be seen on TV doing that inane “chop” and chanting that annoying song.

The Braves fan is nonchalant throughout the season - no enthusiasm, no vigor, other than the aforementioned chopcrap - because he or she “knows” the team will be in the playoffs (nay, the World Series). Guess what, Atlanta? It is actually possible for your team to NOT be in the playoffs! The Braves fan is so spoiled that he or she will only put forth any kind of effort during the World Series. Those aren’t fans. If the team does not make the playoffs this year, their attendence will be in the toilet in 2002, because the fairweather “fans” won’t bother to show up.

I haven’t attended one Phillies game this year. But I have news for you; I’m not the only Phillies fan in the universe. I know, I know; it’s shocking. As it is, the stadium is over 3 hours from me. But guess what - the team draws very well every year. It has a VERY strong, loyal fan base. In recent years, the fan base had eroded quite a bit, since management was not showing much interest in actually winning. They’ve turned the corner this year (and even late last year). How many fans do you think will show up in the playoffs? Try a sellout. The playoffs are the most important time of the year, and Atlantans can’t even be bothered to show up for it.

Sorry, if your fans are kind of passive during the regular season because they “know” you’ll be in the playoffs anyway and then don’t even show up for much of the first round because they “know” you’ll be in the World Series, then you have bad, fickle fans.

[Hey Montfort, did you notice J. D. Drew’s hurt??]

Yeah, I just thought I’d open this thread since I am “nonchalant throughout the season - no enthusiasm, no vigor”.

In fact, here I am, discussing baseball in JUNE. (everyone gasp here for effect). Wow. I am really some crazy rebel down here in Atlanta. I mean, if you try talk about baseball here at all before September, you just get a blank stare. They don’t report on scores on any news outlets before the playoffs start – Thank god for this newfangled interent that allows me to keep up!
Oh, and by the way…

We have outdrawn you in excess of 13,000 fans per game (avg.) over the past 10 years. Just some perspective for you.

Also, while you are correct that some Braves fans have been spoiled, let’s try not to paint everyone of them with that same wide brush, mmkay?

Geez, leave it to mouthbreather to bring logic and coherency to the argument - and with statistics, too! Bravo (he said, punnily). Thanks for the numbers.

As you can see, painting with such a thick brush is handy in that I can get the house painted more quickly, but I miss certain details, such as being wrong. At any rate, I think it’s obvious that you’re not one of those “fairweather” fans, else you wouldn’t have began this thread for us.

Of course, the Braves fan can go to the games and still be nonchalant.

Sadly, this is true. Somewhere inbetween being lackadaisical about baseball (see Expos fans) and being outright asses (see some Mets fans) is a line that I think makes for good, heated baseball fans (See Cubs, St. Louis, etc). We don’t heckle enough. We aren’t loud enough. We don’t cheer for the small things. You know, the little things that you pick up on that you can tell you are in a “baseball town”-- Cheering a member of the other team for an outstanding play. Capacity crowds at playoff games (As much as it sucks and is a tough pill to swallow, it’s a valid criticism. There is NO excuse to have empty seats in your house during the playoffs.)

It annoys me. But really, what can you do?

I guess there’s not much you can do. Some things are what they are. BTW, I think Montreal fans seem to be more than just nonchalant - they’re extremely indifferent. (Then again, the knock on Los Angeles fans is kind of the same; the difference is that the LA fans show up late and leave early, but at least they show up!)
Here’s the thing with the Phillies, though - getting back to the OP - they’re in first place and have been for almost the whole year (or is it the whole year??). In April, when they were in first, people said, “It’s only April.” In May, when they were in first, people said, “It’s only May.” Now they say, “It’s only June.” Sure, they could still blow it, since the season’s not quite half over, but you can make a stronger case for them to win it now than you could in April. The dissenters have dwindled somewhat.

And as I said before, they have heart. I don’t think they’ll go quietly.

Well, I was about to talk some more garbage…but I just looked at the next week of opponents for both of us. We have a three game series with the Marlins, then three at Shea. (it’ll still be good to beat them, even if they aren’t in contention).

The Phillies have three with Pittsburgh then three with Florida.

I’d imagine that both the Braves and the Phillies will (should, at least) win 4 of their next six. In any case, I’d be surprised if we see much changing in the standings before we get to your house next Monday.

Then, It’s on like Megatron.

Well, who knows? The Phillies were just swept by the Devil Rays! And didn’t Pittsburgh just sweep someone, too? (Minnesota? I don’t have the schedule in front of me.)

<GASP!> We can’t possibly live in the same town. We’ve been talking baseball at my office since spring training. We don’t have to sneak out to go to a business man’s special. I don’t know what news yer watching, reading or listening to. Braves games are the lead story all the time. I think the AJC sports writers don’t know what to do with themselves once the season is over. Oh my and who can leave out the guys on 790 the zone?

Oh, and I forgot to mention when the office celebrated Walter Banks Day… now THAT man is a Brave’s fan.

BobbySuezQ,

Let me introduce to a term we use here at the SDMB. Better you get it from a friendly voice than from a Phillies fan
It’s called “whoosh” (the sound made as a point goes flying over your head).

I was being sarcastic, in response to some of dantheman’s comments that Braves fans don’t care about the regular season or early playoffs.

You Braves fans might want to use some consonants when you talk to each other; it helps the rest of us understand.

And, we’ll see next weekend who the best team in the NL East is. The last time the Phils and Braves met up, it was obvious.

Whoosh, indeed! Went over my head. 'Course, that’s because I’m a dumb Yankee who thinks grits look like baby puke. But I digress…

Well, they do. The taste isn’t far off, either.

When you stake yourself out a five-run lead after one inning, try not to lose the game. Especially to the team that’s on your heels. And, especially when you’re not in first place in the division.

3.5 game lead, magic number 92.

Go Phils!

I have no idea whats up with Glavine this year.
He needs to go to time out – I’m getting fed up with him blowing games for us.

Boy I hear ya there. First it’s a twinge in the shoulder, now a sore thumb. I give Smoltz another year til he’s truly effective, Millwood … hmmm almost forgot he was one of the starters. Marquis … oh vey what a routing! Time for a back to back with Maddux n Burkett, (with a Rocker save, naturally).

You’re telling me about Marquis getting hammered. Nelson was no better, either.

I was at the game last night, right next to the Florida dugout. Now I’m wishing I had picked another night to go…

Oh well, at least Pgh beat the Phillies.

Mariner fans are the ones who have the most to brag about. .760 winning pct! After they lose A Rod! Meanwhile, overpaid A Rod’s team is in last place. Got to love it!

Get rid of those overpaid, superstars. Sports is about team work!

June 19th:
Florida 12, Atlanta 2

June 23rd:
Florida 12, Philly 1

I hate to say it, but it looks like these Marlins are for real.

Oh, and god forbid I miss a chance to take a stab at the Mets:

6 runs in the top of the 11th? How you Mets fans liking “Larry” now?

Everyone, with me!
“Larry! … Larry! [sub]3for5, 3 runs scored, HR, 3RBI (not to mention his HR yesterday!)[/sub] Larry! … Larry!..”

Suckers!

A-Rod isn’t overpaid at all. He deserves his money.

Many of his TEAMMATES, however, are ridiculously overpaid.
