The Prime Day 2024 thread

Prime Day is here! @ZipperJJ usually jumps on this but she’s busy elsewhere so I’ll start this one.

Prime Day began yesterday and runs through today. My weakness is watches. I have a small collection of rather cheap and unimpressive watches but I’m always on the lookout for a good watch deal. This year I managed to snag this Citizen Eco-drive watch for 60% off. It was an invitation-only deal and I requested an invite a week or so ago. I didn’t think I’d get an invite email but one came through at 0530 this morning, only good for two hours. I jumped on it, naturally. This will be the nicest watch I own.

There’s also this Galaxy Watch 6 for 47% off. My wife has been wanting one of these so I’ll probably get one for her.

I’m not in the market for anything else so that’ll probably be it for me unless I find a screaming deal on over-ear wireless headphones.

So what great deals did you snag this year??

I grabbed a few Prime Video channels for $0.99 per month for 2 months.
Britbox (for my wife) and The Great Courses Signature Collection.
Also CrunchyRoll for me and the kids. I set the reminders to cancel these after almost 2 months.

I ordered a ProfessionaI Meat Thermometer Digital, 3X Faster 0.5 Sec Instant Read, NIST Certified Accurate to ±0.5°F, 100% Waterproof, Auto-rotating Bright Display, Auto Wake/Sleep, NSF Certified. Only $17 and will make a good addition to my grill stuff.

For $30 I found a pair of slip on walking shoes, a god price and worth a try.

Thanks for starting this! I am sad I haven’t had a chance to really get deep into it and look for deals and find cool tips and tricks to milk offers.

One of the things I was busy with yesterday trying to get my picky senior dogs to eat, so I landed on some freeze-dried meal mixers at about 40% off that get good reviews.

I also made my mom get some of these Rubbermaid Brilliance containers. I have some already and I love them. She had just been talking about replacing her old food storage containers. They were $64 yesterday when she bought them, $109 later in the day, and now $75 at the moment. I recommend them!

We both have Prime Visa cards, and we’re cool with no-rush shipping, so we got 7% cash back on our purchases instead of the typical 5%. Woohoo!

I have a cheap OXO thermometer of the same style. They are very, very handy. Protip: have a spare battery or two available and ready as they tend to die at inopportune times.

Good point.

I think the one I bought takes only a single AAA. So always on hand at least.

Mine takes a weird button battery. It died halfway though a brisket which really, really sucked. I can’t find the right battery locally so I bought a multipack from Amazon and have extras at the ready now. But it was a frustrating lesson to learn the hard way.

Once upon a time it was extremely difficult to get a video card at a decent price because of the Bitcoin mining fad. People were buying up video cards in bulk and using the GPUs on the cards to handle coin farming. That drove the price up to astronomical levels. When it came time to get a decent card for my PC, I couldn’t find any legitimate gaming cards for less than $600. :frowning:

Finally, after a couple of years of watching prices like a hawk, the fad died down and prices went to a more sane level. I found an NVidia GeForce 1070 Ti for $400 and pounced on it.

This week I got an invite to a very limited alpha spot test for an MMORPG in development (can’t say which one due to an NDA), and I was reviewing the hardware requirements for the test, and saw that my video card met the minimum. For shame! I am a gamer, dammit! That is when I realized that my video card I was so proud of was purchased 6 years ago. That’s like a lifetime in computer years.

So I went over to Amazon and to my delight, they had a really decent card available for Prime Day. $50 off.

It will arrive the day before the test, so I should have time to install it and get the kinks worked out. And best of all, it’s $100 less than I’d paid for the other card years ago. I’m excited!

I put a pair of compact binoculars on my Wish List a few years ago but no one has bought them for me. I noticed they were on sale for Prime Day, so I decided to just buy them for myself.

I also got a deal on a new Black & Decker battery powered string trimmer. I’d been thinking about getting a new one for a while; the relatively cheap Toro corded one I bought back in 2008 has been giving me problems recently, so I decided to pull the trigger.

On the subject of meat thermometers, I am lazy and buy the kind that you stick into the meat and then pre-set to a temperature based on the meat type and desired doneness (assuming something like beef), then I launch an app on my phone which will alert me when the food is at the right temperature.

This is my current one, and look at that, it’s a Prime Day deal if someone wanted it.

It’s pretty nice, you can actually use it on two meats at once if you needed to (I’ve never done it though). If I’m doing something like a pork loin or roast, I stick in the probe, turn on the thermometer, launch my app on my phone and make sure the right meat is picked, and then just do something else until my phone alerts me. No need to set a timer either.

The probes have really long cords so I can easily put my food in an oven and set the thermometer on the counter near the stove. You just have to wash the probe afterward (I stick it in the utensil rack in my dishwasher after rinsing it off in the sink).

I think I have this same machine. The automatic line feed mechanism is an absolute godsend. No more tapping on the ground to get the line out!

I have a Black and Decker brand trimmer. It’s really nice. I also have a leaf blower and a drill, all by Black and Decker, and they all use the same removable rechargeable battery. So if I am using one item and the battery dies, I just swap out a battery from one of my other items and charge the dead one. I’m never in a situation where I can’t use a device because of a dead battery.

I’m really happy with this meat thermometer with a handy reference guide printed on it

Same here and agree about the batteries. Have extra on hand. They also charge pretty quickly. My only beef is that the leaf blower is pretty underpowered for actual leaves. I have a powerful Ego blower for the lawn but it uses up the battery like there’s no tomorrow so I use that one for the lawn and the B&D for the driveway and walk and porch and anywhere else that doesn’t need as much CFM.

This is true. I rarely need it for that because we don’t have many trees near the house. I usually use it to blow out my garage so I don’t have to sweep. For the dirt and little pieces of debris that accumulate, it is awesome. It only takes a few minutes to get my whole garage, and blows stuff out from under our cars where I could never reach with a push broom.

If I was dealing with huge amounts of leaves in a yard, it wouldn’t measure up I’m sure, but it’s great for the little jobs I use it for.

Thank you! I needed a couple of new sets of queen sized sheets, and I got them for virtually half price at Amazon.

My earbuds had crapped out, so I bought these for $20 instead of $68. Who knows if they’re good, but the reviews look okay enough, and at that price worth a try.

That does sound really nice. And it solves the exact problem I have with my current one – the line hasn’t been feeding properly lately when I bump it on the ground, even though I just recently replaced the spool.

I bought a several pairs of Eddie Bauer Rainier pants. I love these pants for travel: there’s a front zip pocket on your thigh, perfect for stuffing wallet and passport in a place you can’t get pick pocketed. Also great for hiking and exercise: very light weight, breathes, dries very quickly but also tends to shed water. Marked down 50%+ from $70. Thanks Prime!

Black and Decker Blender. Dang it’s nice. $99 blender for $39.

A Cherry Logo T-shirt. $5

A black king sz bottom sheet to go with a lone B&W striped top sheet I have. $9.99

I’m looking for a deal on a bigger Crock-Pot.

Prime Video is offering several add-on channels for $0.99 / month for 2 months, including Starz, PBS, Britbox, Acorn TV, and some others. Offer ends today. If there’s something on one of those channels you’ve been wanting to watch, now might be the time to sign up, binge, and cancel.

I have been interested in watching Happy Valley, so I am very tempted to do that with the Acorn add-on. ETA: I did it. I signed up for the Acorn TV trial.
