the rain:love it or not?

It depends.

Lately, everytime it rains really hard, I have to fight harder and harder against my urge to run out and play in the puddles and just run around. And I’ve always enjoyed sitting there watching thunderstorms and electrical storms roll in.

But driving in the rain? It’s amazing, with all the heavy downpours we get here in Austin, you’d think the people here had never seen rain before. I swear, you could bring this city’s traffic to a standstill if you pointed your friggin’ sprinkler into the street.

rain < sun < snow

Can’t get enough of that white stuff.

Rain is good on occasion, but driving in a downpour where u can’t see the lane dividers, and visibility extends to 3 car lengths… is not exactly pleasant.

It depends.

If I’m at home alone on a rainy afternoon during Christmas break watching a Smurfs marathon while the raindrops streak down the sliding glass door and, every so often, there’s thunder and lightning, rain is nice.

If I’m on a three day backpacking trip in the mountains with the rain pouring down and I’m in my friend Jeff’s crappy backpacking tent in a soaking wet sleeping bag, knowing that in the morning we’ll have to pack up the sopping wet tent and hike 10 miles before we get to the place where we can get picked up, rain sucks hard.

Oddly enough, I love rain, even thoughI may have to bike through it. But what I have noticed lately is that biking in the rain isn’t as bad as my dread of doing so is. I just take it slow, accept that I am going to be wet, and I really don’t have half the trouble I anticipate having. Oddly enough, drivers seem a bit nicer and more understanding when it is raining. Around me at least. I haven’t had an incident while it was raining in years.

And the occasional reward of being outside when the sun breaks through is worth the price at least. One storm broke as I rode through it and I got to see my first full rainbow.

Plus, when I get home, I have a perfect excuse to shower, put on the bathrobe, make some hot chocolate and veg in the Papasan chair for the rest of the night.

“Oh I love the rainy night…”
“I’m only happy when it rains”

I live in Las Vegas and we don’t get much of that stuff falling from the sky, but when we do - watch out! Flash floods in mere seconds!

We just had two days of rain…this is our “monsoon” season, and it wasn’t bad.

But I remember Illinois, I remember NY and I remember Berlin…day one of rain is great - sit inside, watch Casablanca, clean the house…day two is ok…read a book, do some more cleaning…day three is starting to get annoying and the spiders start to move in to get dry…day four is when your clean house starts to look like a pig sty from the pizza boxes you have ordered because you sure as hell ain’t going out in this shit…and by day five you realize why it is a good thing you have never bought a firearm…and if there is a day six…well, you start to experiment with body piercing and…

I love steamy summer thunderstorms, but alas, I live in San Diego so that never happens. I realize I have absolutely *no right to complain whatsoever * - I live in the midst of the best weather on the planet. Still, I do miss those storms! (I have a sound machine that plays a storm to put me to sleep at night, too.)

We’ve had a lot of rain here, lately. Though I feel sorry for the campers who decided to stay in the Netherlands, I love rain. So much better than the heat-wave we had last year.

Love walking and driving in it - even on a bike.

I can’t imagine someone not liking rain. Thousands of people died in Europe [France, etc.] during the heatwave. We’re not build for heat, around here.

And yes, the yard smells lovely, after the rain.

I love precipitation of all kinds. Rain is so moody and poetic and peaceful. I love sitting in a warm kitchen, eating mashed potatoes and gravy when it’s raining. Thunderstorms make me want to run around outside naked. In Japan, when it rains, the green color of leaves and grass gets so intense! It’s otherworldly.

Sometimes I see me dead in it.

It’s raining here now too.

Like snow, I don’t like it when I have to go out driving in it, but love it when I’m indoors and have nothing better to do than watch it fall outside the windows. Under those conditions, it can go on all day as far as I’m concerned.

I also like rain in the evenings, since it’s a pleasant sound to fall asleep to and it keeps the neighbors nice and quiet in their own houses.

Ah, rain :wally !! That brings back memories, sweet memories. Living in a desert for the last few years, rain has become even more precious to me. Starting with the clouds banishing the sun and the breeze cooling the surroundings, to the sound of the rustling of leaves on the trees, to the the first whiff of moist earth in the breeze, to the first drops of drizzle, gradually increasing to a full fleged rain. And the changing of hte color of the surroungings (purer cos the smog has been removed), the red earth, moist earth smell even stronger, me either in my home listening to some nice slow music sipping hot tea and eating pakoras (Indian snacks, don’t know the foreign equivalent), or walking about in the rain barefoot. Yes, the roof is leaking, and it will be humid as hell when the rain ends, but who cares!! Lets enjoy it while I still can…
Ah, sweet memories… :wally
[awakes]must get back to work[/awakes]

Oh, forgot to mention: love it (in case you couldn’t guess  )

LOVE IT for all the reasons above …

… But also because it means I don’t need to wrestle with the *&!"ing hose adaptor to attach it to my *&!"ing stupid tap to get the *&!"ing lawn sprinkler going. It takes me up to an hour sometimes to get the *&!"ing thing working.

It’s funny…I just noticed this thread…

Right after I noticed it was POURING outside and turned off the AC and opened the balcony door & the window to get the smell/sound/cool air.

So yeah, I love it, as long as I’m home or somewhere safe.

I *love rain!

Especially the really heavy stuff… you know… long walk, big (or no) coat, loud music down your ears… Hardcore rain lovin’!

Rain? Oh, how I miss it. I doubt we’ll be seeing any around these parts for several more months. Just fires. :frowning:

Yes, I love rain. I love rainstorms. Especially summer rainstorms.
Why the fuck do I live in LA???

We have a mediteranian climate. Cool, wet winters, hot, dry summers. Dry as in no rainfall between April and October.

I love summer rain. Especially thunderbooms.

New Jersey gets this “cold, wet rain” at the beginning and end of winter. If anyone thinks wet rain is redundant, they’ve never experienced this crap. I’ve living through some nasty weather, but that type of rain is the worst!

I love the rain, too. Most of it comes in the spring. In the winter it snows if it’s cold enough in the valley. We hardly see rain in the summertime here in the Boise area, though, so it’s always a welcome relief from the heat when in the evening thunderstorms form from the daytime heating and bring rain. I prefer gray rainy days to sunny days, which in the summer are too hot and bright for me. I envy the people who live in Seattle.

I too love the rain. I would GLADLY exchange any sunny day for a rainy day. I just find it so incredibly tranquil.

And I love being the one freak who, while everyone cowers in fear under roofs, proceeds to walk nonchalantly down the street. I also love doing the stereotypical music video scene of sticking my arms waaay out, tilting my head back and just letting it fall on me. It feels so great.

Ya, I love the rain. And no, I don’t mind getting wet.
