So, I guess we can close this thread and re-open the SuckWagon, eh, Kim?
Never had I so much glee watching Dallas win a game as I did yesterday. I even found myself cheering for the hated Cowboys.
I even bought a Post this morning, just to read the Sports section.
Anyway, I’ll reiterate my point made in other threads: the Redskins are not a good team. They’re decent, with a 5-6 record. If they didn’t lose 5 and then win 5, they’d have won-and-lost alternate games like most 5-6 teams do, and they wouldn’t be on SI’s cover. Why? Because they’re decent. Y’know, like the Chargers and the Browns.
Hell, I was amazed to see that Arizona is now tied with the Giants and Skins for second place. Or, tied for fourth, since none of them deserve a wild card spot.
You all know I’m an Eagles fan, and I’m not going to say they’re the greatest team in the league. They have troubles winning at home, and they’re very suspect against the run (I’m looking at their game next weekend against Tomlinson and the Chargers – remember them, Skins fans? Week 1? – with a slight sense of dread). But, I know they’re a better team than Washington, something that will be proven in two weeks.
Gunslinger and divemaster - feel free to point, laugh, and boast. The 'Boys earned you the bragging rights last night, no question about it.
I was kinda perplexed by the Redskins’ play-calling yesterday. We were 24 minutes into the game before Stephen Davis ran on first down. And where did that pitch to Davis, that worked so well against the Eagles, disappear to? It’s a good play when the middle is stacked against a straight-ahead runner, allowing him to run outside the tackles without having to ‘turn the corner’.
The Cowboys’ and the Redskins’ offensive brain trusts faced the same basic problem: you’ve got a QB that you don’t want to ask too much of, and a RB you know they’re going to be stacking the defense against. How do you create some running room for your back, or use their stacking against your back to create some easy completions for your QB?
The Cowboys did a great job of varying the point of attack when Emmitt Smith was running; the Redskins didn’t do anything similar, unfortunately.
Dangit, why didn’t y’all rag on my boys beforehand so I could come in here and post quotes and smileys? Can’t do it. The thread’s been way too highbrow.
FTR, Dallas played out their ass yesterday. It was by and far their best game of the year. Why are they 3 - 8? It was the first game where their offense showed up. Plus, when Jerry Mathers says his team winning this game would mean more than having a winning season, well, we just couldn’t give that beaver a reason to smile.
Seriously, good luck next week. I’d really like to see Green have a good final year.
You’re right, Montfort: each NFL team has exactly the same level of ability all through a season. No team ever is a better, or worse, team at the end of the season than at its beginning. Can’t happen.
Having a 1-1 record against another team, should that happen, doesn’t prove superiority. It’s evidence in support of the proposition of equality, though it doesn’t prove it, of course.
Well, what proves superiority? A better record? Comparing results to common opponents?
The Redskins won five straight games. Big deal. The Ravens, last year, won 7 (I think) straight. What counts, of course, is when they won those seven straight.
Actually, the Ravens’ last loss last year was, I think, against the Redskins. Huh. I guess the Redskins were a superior team to them, eh?
Nope, they lost to the Skins (10/15), the Titans (10/22), then Pittsburgh (10/29). Then the Ravens won out the rest of the year (Not that it has any bearing on the point you’re making.)
Eh, they can drop the rest of the season at this point, for all I care.
I, the Fairest of the Fair Weather Fans, will still watch them because I’ve seen something in the past few weeks that I haven’t seen in a very long time.
Potential.
I can see it there like the outline of a doubloon in a sand sifter. Probably not this year, but I’m seeing something there that looks like the makings of a… a… good team.
I will take the time to regain my familiarity with this year’s team because I see a glimmer of hope for the future, and I hope to see all those horribly jumbled pieces one day fall together.
And if that doubloon turns out to be a pewter slug, so be it, but right now I’ve got a hunch that something is finally working again in Washington, DC.
You tell me. You just said that splitting their season series with the Redskins would show that the Philadelphia Pigeons are the better team. I just pointed out that there were problems with your reasoning.
Funny thing, that was exactly my point. Thanks for the assist.
At the time they played each other last year, the Redskins were the better team. But by the end of the season, things had changed rather dramatically - the Ravens had become much better, and the Redskins, much worse.
