The Return of The Return of the King

December 14???

I was so hoping it would be November.

Waa.

Is it too much to ask of CNN to use the right word anymore? “Arrant” is a word, but surely they meant to say errant arrow.

Maybe Arrant™ is the brand name of the arrow.

God I am so looking forward to this - My Christmas present to myself, definitely.

I have to assume there will be theater screenings of the extended releases of each episode in the Trilogy, back-to-back. I also have to assume that if I tried to attend such a LOTR marathon, my butt would fall off. 50 extra minutes is a lot of extra minutes. Let’s hope they add something worth having. I found the extras in FOTR to be wonderful, but some of the extras in TTT (those concerning Merry and Pippin in particular) were downright goofy.

Don’t get me started on Aragorn’s little adventure over the cliff, or Legolas greeting him with a “you look terrible,” in Sindarin (I mean, come on). The films could also benefit from some minutes being cut out, if you ask me.

I wonder if Jackon would sanction “fan versions”, a la “The Phantom Edit” of SWEPI.

Legolas shot first, dammit!

Damn. Seems a very late release for those of us whose Chanukah shopping needs to be done by December 7th.

I heard that one of the additions will be at the beginning showing how Gandalf, Merry, and Pippin defeated Sauromon

The full list of additions can be found here (very SPOILER heavy!):

Is there a box set with the extended versions of all three films coming out?

I’ve read that there WILL NOT be a box set because Jackson doesn’t want to milk the consumer for any more money.

Since I’ve had my fill of whining about this, I don’t want to get anyone started about it. That’s so 2002. The current fashion is to whine about the new Star Wars DVDs (to be followed by SW Ep. III whining in 2005).

Doesn’t look like the EE will have anything helping explain the deus ex machina that is the Army of the Dead.

As opposed to wiping out the Black Fleet and then being released in the book?

There is a box set of all the EE editions, but it has nothing extra (other than the big slipcase – that is, you aren’t screed if you bought FORT EE and/or TT EE))

Dunno, it has been at least 25 years since I read the book. In the movie our heroes are in a pickle, to say the least, but luckily for them there is a useful Army of the Dead sitting around for them to overrun their enemies.

I would hope there is more about this in the books.

I’ve had this problem before with birthdays. This is what I did for Mr. Congo on his recent birthday (two of his gifts were released after the day):

  1. Pre-order the movie.
  2. Play around with your computer and make a certificate showing the movie you bought for the person and the day it will ship.
  3. Wrap all nice and pretty.

Mr. Congo loves these kinds of gifts. This year, he got a video game on his birthday, “They Call Me Tater Salad” 2 weeks later and “AquaTeen” set 2 3 weeks after that. It made his birthday last even longer.

Once I get a hold of the ROTK EE I’m really going to have to start from the beginning and watch all three EE films.
I think i’ll break it down into 6 consecutive nights with a disc per night.

At a running time of 11 hours and 21 minutes I could never sit still that long.

Damn! Imagine if they wanted to show these on tv. With 12 minutes of commercials per hour of film you’d have to break it down over 7 days for a mini-series that was on two hours a night!

Some. The setup is similar, our 3 hero’s and a small company of rangers and Elrond’s two sons pass through the dead mountain and race to the summoning stone where Aragon claims kingship and calls the dead to fulfill their oath. Then they pass down to the coast and the presence of the dead cause the corsair to flee the ships. Aragon frees the rowing slaves, mans the ships with local forces and the ships pass up the river to save Minas Tirith. The sudden appearance of this new force and the confusion caused by the Rohirim and the death of the morgul king overthrow the force from Mordor.

The dead, though, are dismissed once the fleet leaves for Minas Tirith.
