I waited to buy The Fellowship of the Ring so that I could get the Argonath figures. I waited to buy The Two Towers so that I could get the Gollum figure. Will there be a collector’s set of The Return of the King with a little statue? If so, when?
November. 4 and a half hours. Full CD containing all the music soundtracks.
Incidentally, I’ve been unloading my storage unit. I’ve got my Easton Press and other leatherbound books on the shelves, and The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, The Silmarillion and The Atlas of Middle Earth are nicely set. Just need that next statuette…
(My paperback LOTR and Hobbit books that I got nearly 30 years ago are still boxed up somewhere.)
IMDB gives the runtime of the extended edition as 4hrs 10 minutes.
In other news thats 49 minutes more movie, does anybody know what the content of the added scenes will be. I’ve heard of one:
Wormtongue kills Sauruman by tossing him out a window
My roommate plans to turn create a 13hr drinking game consisting of watching the three extended editions back-to-back-to-back. I don’t know if he’s broken the news to his liver yet.
More:
- Sam fighting Orcs in Cirith Ungol.
- More discussion with the Mouth of Sauron at the Black Gates.
- probably a tour of the city for Pippin
- Collecting more soldiers before heading to Mordor
And to head off any speculation:
NO, the Scouring of the Shire will NOT be included.
Early this month, there were reports in the trades that the release date will be pushed back to December. They cite scheduling conflicts with actors who need to complete voice work on RotK.
Nothing official from New Line on this yet, so take it for what it is worth.
It’s actually going to be out in December. Reports range from 40-50 minutes of additional footage added.
And more:
- Gandalf confronting Saruman at Isengard
- Merry pledging allegiance to Theoden at Edoras
- Aragorn using the Palantir to reveal himself to Sauron
- Witch King confronting Gandalf during the battle of Pelennor Fields
- The Houses of Healing scene in which Faramir and Eowyn meet
- Drinking game at Edoras between Gimli and Legolas
Man, I can’t wait!
What’s an Argonath?
The Argonath were the two colossal statues of kings, on the banks of the river Anduin, that marked the boundary of Gondor (depicted in Fellowship). The FOTR extended edition included replicas (suitable as bookends) which were Extremely Cool.
One of mine fell off the shelf and broke his hand. I’m quite bummed.
The “Stop! In the name of love!” statues in the first movie.
I thought I saw Merry pledging allegiance to Theoden in the theater version… Am I thinking of something else? Wasn’t Theoden the “caretaker ruler” guy?
Really? And I’ve already bought all three soundtracks. No doubt I’ll shell out for them again. Any word on what the statue will be for this set?
That was the other half or Merry and Pippin pledging allegiance to the steward of Gondor, Denethor son of Ecthelion.
Theoden is the lord of Rohan. He’s the guy with the gold and silver hair and beard, and his palace is a Viking long house.
When it is going to released has not been officially announced.
Foir the gift version, a Minis Tirith model/statuette would be cool.
Brian
Last time I was hoping for another set of bookends, one Minas Tirith and the other either Orthanc or Minas Morgul. Maybe this time . . .
I believe they had a second or two of the “Merry pledging allegiance” scene in the trailers for the movie.
I was hoping they’d have a “temptation of Sam” scene- the one of the two great moments of the Rankin-Bass ROTK (the other is Frodo’s chilling words “I do not now wish to do that which I had come to do.”)
Merry pledging allegiance to Theoden was in one of the first internet teasers, 3.5 years ago. Still waiting to see it.
Evil Death, great description. I loved those! I wonder if any of them are still around.
Thanks.
Ah, I see. Thanks!
