The Riches 9 April '07 (spoilers)

I think it was her brother, though I couldn’t swear to it.

I forgot about him… Is he the father? I’m having trouble tracking some of these characters!

I was thinking so, but Geobabe makes me think it’s the brother.
I can look on the recording I made, or we can watch the marathon that is on tonight.

Someone explain something for me. This seems like a show I would like but I have only caught a few minutes of it. Are those accents supposed to be fake or are they really supposed to be Americans? Those are two of the worst American accents I have ever heard. If it is not supposed to be fake I don’t think I can start watching it.

He is British. She is doing a Southern accent that sounds lovely to me, although she did say “moe skee toes” instead of “muh skee tahs” for mosquitoes.

You mean the character is British? I know Eddie Izzard is British. I think Minnie Driver’s accent is horrible. I can overlook one bad accent, but two just takes me out of the show. And I was looking forward to this one.

Both characters are supposed to be American. I think Driver’s accent is OK–at least, it’s not distracting to me–but Izzard’s is horrible. He should get a few pointers from Hugh Laurie.

I suspect that real Irish Travellers have a pretty wide variety of accents, so it is not a problem for me.

They either have Irish accents or American accents depending on where they were born. Certainly not what I heard on the show.

You mean an American accent depending on where they were born in the US?

Minnie Driver’s the only one in the family trying for a Southern accent and it sounds okay to me. I don’t hear a Southern accent from Wayne and the kids, but we don’t know where they’ve spent most of their time. Could have been anywhere. Wayne seems to mimic whoever he’s talking to, which could be part of his disguise.

And to me Minnie Driver’s accent is one of the worst American accents of any type I have ever heard. Izzard’s accent is slightly better to me. If you don’t hear it that way then I’m glad it’s not taking you out of the show.

It sounds “real” to me, but more like Virginia. If they were speaking like people I’ve heard from Louisiana, you probably couldn’t understand them, and that would really take you out of the show.

The characters are so good the accents sort of grow on you.

If I didn’t like the show so much, it probably would.

Kyra Sedgwick on The Closer – maybe it’s all the “thank yews” to her crew, but her accent bugs me. I’ve heard she’s from the South and that her accent isn’t faked, so maybe I just have a tin ear.

Actually, according to her IMDB bio, she’s from NYC, so it is a fake accent. There was an amusing piece (skip ahead to about 30 minutes in) on This American Life a few years ago about bad Hollywood Southern accents and the guy responsible for most of them.

I’m not sure exactly what Eddie and Minnie’s natural accents are in real life, but as far as the show is concerned there a couple of issues:

  1. They do a lot of cons so some of their accents in the show are supposed to be fake, including possibly as the Riches - I notice that the way Minnie’s character speaks “at home” is pretty different from the way she speaks to people when “in character”.
  2. I would guess that what they speak like at home, or more likely, when at the Travellers camp is what their in show “natural accent” is supposed to sound like.
  3. As travellers, I wouldn’t expect them to have any specific American regional accent. Maybe some influence from a particular area but not exactly the same. If anything I’d think they’d have their own particular parlance.
  4. Eddie’s character did not grow up a Traveller. He married into the tribe after he met Dahlia and was originally a ‘muggle’ and so wouldn’t have the same accent.

But in general I love the show. Lots of quirks, and I like how they mix in humor with moements of genuine drama and character relationships. And the plot seems to be moving along at a fair clip so the tension of whether or not the writers can keep it going is still there. For some reason it reminds me of a mix between Chumscrubber and Pretender.
