Well, I did it; sent in the paperwork and put down the deposit. In just about a year I will travel to the city of Ushuaia in Argentina and board a ship for a 2-week cruise to Antarctica. The cost is as much as a (very) small car, but this is something I have been pointing to and saving for for many years and now I’m committed (or should be committed, perhaps). Well, got a year to prepare, at least.
Cookie, glad you helped out; politeness does get you places.
Will have to look into the 2024 eclipse; can always book a hotel 250 miles away and drive up and back that day…
OK, lunch has been lunched, let that settle and then off to the gym. Take care all.
Thank you, friends, for your caring advice. My back is the same today as yesterday before the walk, so no harm done.
Just to be clear, it’s not normal for someone to be unable to walk more than 2 minutes without severe pain, and it’s not a matter of my working up to longer distances. I’m supposed to be able to do that–in fact, the instructions say it’s essential. It’s very frustrating to know with 100% certainty that something else is wrong with my back and to not have that addressed. It’s like the doc puts your broken left arm in a cast, and when you call to say you think you broke your right arm, too, you’re told to rest that left arm.
I’m back to lying around. Four more days.
sari, sorry you and your son are dealing with all the delay and malfunctions. It’s the small irritants that add up to big stress.
wordy, everyone should have a boss as nice as you.
metalmouse, a trip to Antarctica sounds fantastic. I know it’s a year away, but I hope we get to see lots of photos.
I called USAA’s agent that handles auto repair claims. They said they sent their information to USAA. I called USAA. They said that since the cost of repair is so close to the value of the car (to them, not to me), they might total it. They might reach a decision later today.
Cats: “We have cabin fever. Let us OUT!!”
Me: “It’s cold, and the wind is blowin’ something fierce, and there’s melty wet snow everywhere.”
Cats: “For the love of everything holy, woman, let us go out!!”
Me: “Fine. O.K.”
{ 90 seconds later }
Cats: “Let us back INNN!! OMG it’s so cold, and windy, and there’s wet cold white stuff everywhere!”
Me: “Told ya so.”
Cats: { imma puke on this rug }
I haz a frustrated on your behalf. I’m so sorry you’re dealing with this pain.
Well, I had a fine start to my day today. I got to blow out my clogged sewer lines again. (I have a magic device which does the blowing). After that I went searching for sustenance and found a can in the cupboard proporting to be corned beef hash. In a fit of optimism I opened it and poured it into a skillet. (The fact that I could pour it should have been a clue.) When it was all bubbly and hot I cracked a couple of eggs on top of it. The eggs were good.
In other news, I got a bill this morning from the ambulance company for $250.00 for a trip back in December.
We also got our Covid-19 antigen rapid test kits. Unfortunately the hospital won’t accept them for my echo-cardiogram coming up on next Thorsday. I’ll still have to go get my frontal lobe massaged on Moonday. Joy.
Wifey is gone off doing real estate. I need her or the Daughter to help me haul the last big piece of my train layout down the stairs. I guess I could cut it up some more, but I’m thoroughly sick of making sawdust up there and just want it down and into the trailer to go to the dump. 'Sides, I think I burned up my reciprocating saw doing that. I’ll have a go at fixing it (again) but it may be at the end of life. It’s over 50 years old, after all. I remember buying it at the Sears surplus store in Eugene OR. in the early '70s. I think I paid $15.00 or $20.00 for it. I miss that store.
metalmouse - Good luck on the trip! Sounds like a fun adventure. Didn’t we used to have a poster who served as a cook and wintered in several times in Antarctica?
Mom bought a baseball hat at the McMurdo Station when she visited and has since lost it. If you would be willing to replace it for her, I would happily pay you to do so. (It was the last place they went before Dad’s mind failed so much she could take him with her anymore.)
That’s got to be totally maddening. I hope the real issue gets addressed correctly soon.
My back has been feeling oddly pain free for the past couple of days which is allowing me to remember how much my hips hurt.
How exciting! I just woke up to a wet kitchen floor because GG was playing in the water fountain again.
GG LLC has run into the first snag. I don’t use artificial preservatives so my soft cheeses don’t last very long. Shelf life for my mozzarella is three days before starting to lose taste and texture. The diner wants to start using it to make pizza but I don’t want to deliver twice a week. I’ve got some cooking now that I’m going to put in a salt brine and see how that works.
(Did you guys know that you can put so much salt into water that you over-saturate it and the salt can’t physically dissolve when you go past that point? It takes a lot of work to get to that point, but it is possible.) (No, I don’t have a life, why do you ask?)
I filled the rest of their order this morning, they know they won’t get mozzarella from me until I’m happy with the finished product. I’m not going to let them suggest anything else, this is starting to feel a little like work.
{{{nellie}}} I hope that they get your back issue figured out soon.
That sounds like a win-win situation for both you and the guy taking recyclables cookie.
You’re lucky on the bill for the ambulance ride bumba. My last ride (when I totaled the Toyota) left my medical and auto insurances duking it out over who would pay and meanwhile, I had to cover nearly $1200 until they figured it out.
The place is cleaned, laundry done, groceries bought and supper from Arby’s et (with a coupon for the sandwiches, two French dips and 2 salads ran me ~$10 and I have lunch for tomorrow).
I don’t know if anyone recalls my mentions a few weeks ago about cracking a whole bunch of black walnuts. Today I used some in making my maternal grandmother’s banana cake, a long time family favorite. I knew my sister was coming over and wanted something to offer her. Well, I’d given her some of the nuts and guess what she brought to share with me? Three guesses and the first two don’t count.
Don’t think I’ll be getting close to McMurdo, but if there is a store in Argentina with them, well, remind me again in about 350 days…
Well, sometimes you feel like a nut…sometimes you don’t…
Did manage to get to the gym, moved some weights around and did 35 minutes of cycling while reading a book (can’t do that on a regular bike). Soccer tomorrow so that will occupy most of my time, will try to get swimmin’ in on Sunday.
Bumba, speaking of sewer/water lines, I noticed the there are colored lines (mostly blue) sprayed near my water meter. And not just me, but other folks in the area; looks like they’re going to be doing some work around here.
shoe, how soon after encountering winter did the cats want to go out again??
Dinner was BLT minus the LT on Rye bread, am now out of bread and need to re-supply. Got the gas bill which was a bit pricey, but manageable. Now waiting for the trip deposit to post to pay my credit card, may have to move some money from my savings to checking, especially next month. We’ll see.
OK, bedtime will be early tonight I think, so all y’all take care.
Up from naptime, watching hockey. dinner tonight was herbed salmon, wild rice blend with mushrooms, and Aldi Mediterranean Roasted Vegetables(hey, even Iron Chefs use shortcuts sometimes)
Fresh made from full fat cow milk. Low moisture low fat mozzarella is so much of a pain that I don’t want to even think about making it to sell. This whole thing is seriously reminding me why I didn’t like working.
Thank you! I’m sure that you will be telling us about your departure plans so I will remind you then if I still have the need.
Mom and I are very excited to be doing the needlework seminar in July. I’m not as excited about doing it in Tucson, but at least Mom is wanting to travel again. When the world ended her date book was so full of plans that I had to book time with her months in advance. I know that the constant stimulation was what kept her 84 year old mind active because I could see the decline after she was forced to be home bound for a couple of years.
She’s going to fly out a few days early and stay here to rest up before the drive to Tucson. That means I’m going to have to put all my crap in the hobby room and clean the big stuff out of her closet. Just like I had to do last time she came and the time before. Does anyone see a pattern? And does anyone wonder who’s fault it is? I’m blaming the cats.
In an odd mood the last few days. Plus side, DH will be back to work at the start of March (although for some bizarre reason, he had to go through new hire paperirk again and has to do the 90-day probationary period before health coverage kicks back in, so that’s three more months of COBRA), and we’re still financially stable. All four of us are apparently healthy, except for perhaps my emotional state.
I seem to be going post-apocalyptic in my entertainment lately, with recent rereads of the Newsflesh series and Alas, Babylon, and just started On the Beach yesterday. Also rereading stuff relating to Jonestown. Odd memory hiccup I had on that topic, too: I could have sworn I remember watching Guyana Tragedy: The Story of Jim Jones, starring Powers Boothe as Jones, with my father. That TV movie first aired in mid-April 1980, three weeks after my father’s death.
Howdy, y’all. I’m still here. Put in a long week of building the musical set. I had one of those days when you get home and rub your eyebrows and get sawdust in your eyes. I’m trying to stay positive that I’m doing the things. Thanks all y’all for the helps with that.
I received a mysterious amazon delivery of some supplements. “Resveratrol”. I didn’t order these, and my Amazon account doesn’t think I did. WTF? According to the googles, the woo science says it is an antiaging thing.
shoe Nikki is adorbs. It is remarkable how much space a tiny kitty can consume.
nameless I’d like to try your cheese. No wait, that sounds dirty…
flyboy Good luck on the car situation.
nellie I hope your back issues resolve in a good way soonest. What you are going through sucks.
To all who suggested I try an etsy store, I do actually have one. I probably made the things too specialized to what I am also selling in local gift shops. I’ve sold quite a bit of stuff to some gift shops in the area. Maybe I should make some fancier things.
But I do appreciate the support. I gotta do some house cleaning on the etsy store, upon further looking at it. I wasn’t in the greatest of head places when I made it.
