The royal scribe turns away from the scene below and sprinkles the parchment’s still wet ink with sand and waits for it to dry. He turns to stare at his chambers and wonders when they will be filled with the high laughter of a woman once more. Taking the page of supplicant’s names, he wanders down the corridor and gives it to the chambermaid so that she may include it in the bulging folio of names still to be designated.
