The Simple Things

Hey everyone. I’m new here, and although I’ve only been around for about a week I have to say I have greatly enjoyed skimming through and reading posts from so many of you. I hope to have the opportunity to get to know lots of you better around here, and I appreciate those of you who have taken the time to say hello or welcome.

But enough of that stuff… So I’m making Rice Krispy treats last night to take to my daughter’s daycare center and it dawned on me that something I hadn’t seen around here was a list of how the best things in life are often the simple things. Rice Krispy treats, for example. So I figured maybe I’d brave the wilds of the slow server jungle this morning and see if anyone wants to take part in compiling such a list. I figure we could turn it into a book, publish it, and all make heaps of money. After all, how many versions of those “Lessons for Life” books have been sold now?

So… here’s a few to start it off. Come out, say hello, and add your contributions to the project.

Rice Krispy treats…
Sitting on the back porch with a loved one on a warm spring evening looking at the stars…
Seeing that jerk that was going 90 when he sped around you and cut you off on the highway sitting on the shoulder explaining to the state patrolman why he was in such a hurry…
Wandering around the internet for years looking for a great place to hang out and then suddenly wandering on the SDMB…

“People demand freedom of speech to make up for the freedom of thought which they avoid.”

Sleeping in on weekends.

Flying kites with your kids(or by yourself).

Blowing bubbles.

Skinny dipping.

3 day weekends.(I like weekends)

The smell of cookies baking. mmm mmm

Pork is not a verb.

When your big old dog snuggles up and puts his head in your lap and rolls them big eyes,

Sleeping. I love sleeping. My role model is Sunny von Bulow.

Fireflys. They are still magical.

Night Swimming. I grew up on a lake, and there is nothing better than swimming at night, the water warmer than the air temperature, floating and gazing at stars. (see the REM song for a good idea of what it’s like)

Morning Glories.

A cat purring in delight.

These are a few of my favorite things…

Good additions… I was afraid for a little bit there that my very first ever topic would just fade away and slip right off the front page!

Sleeping is a good one… and pets are always a comfort. I used to have cats, but they moved to live with my parents when my daughter was born. We still have dogs… big dogs.

Night swimming… I can “almost” relate to that. I’ve never been much of a swimmer, but I used to love to go camping and just lay out under the stars at night.

How long do you guys think the list has to be before we have a shot at publishing and getting rich?!

I.M.—Just call it “Hot Chocolate Soup for the Angel-Cat Lover’s Soul, by Patsy Ramsey” and you’ll sell a billion copies, even if the pages are blank.

Watching the wildlife out over my lake on a quiet day. Watching my dog try to chase everything in the water.

Hearing my son’s key turn in the door, knowing he is home safe and sound again.

A warm summer rain.

I’ve learned that if someone says something unkind about me, I must live so that no one will believe it.

A warm summer night, some cold beer, and a few friends to share it with.

If you believed in yourself, and tore enough holes
in your pants, there was always a mist-filled alley
right around the corner.

Opening your mailbox and seeing a magazine you subscribe to rather than bills.

Listening to a new CD for the first time.

Having your car washed after winter is finally over.

Reading the Sunday paper.

Going to sleep in a warm bed while there’s a thunderstorm outside.

Sunday afternoon drive on a chilly day, windows up, and the sun shining in and warming you up.

Strolling in the park with a soft serve vanilla icecream in a waffle cone.

Curling up with a favorite old book and reading until you fall asleep.

Snow storm outside, fire in the woodstove inside. Family and pets, huddled together safe from the dark winter storm.

Mocking sentimental fops on a warm summer day and knowing that I’ll never have to deal with them in real life. That just warms my heart.

Don’t hate me because I’m beautiful,
hate me because i’m an arrogant bastard.

An unexpected pat on the back.

Stargazing and the burden which is lifted when you realize you are completely and entirely insignificant.

Sipping cognac in the snow.

Music.

A nice, fullfilling bowel movement and the knowledge of a job well done.

Yet to be reconciled with the reality of the dark for a moment, I go on wandering from dream to dream.

That made me get all teary-eyed. How sweet.
