The Straight Dope for Women and Gay Men -or- Who is the hottest male celebrity?

What’s an “IHL” ?

Oh, my god, I had the biggest crush on Val Kilmer growing up. Had no idea why on earth anyone paid attention to Tom Cruise when “Top Gun” was on. I mean … who cares? Val Kilmer is right there man!

It’s a terrible movie, but “The Saint” where he plays about a dozen roles-within-a-role was like friggin’ porn to pubescent me.

Jesus. Wentworth Miller, Val Kilmer … I apparently crush on men who, ah, don’t age well.

Oh, shit! Run, Matt Bomer! RUN!!!

I crush hard on Jason Bateman. But is he sexy?
I dunno.
Cillian Murphy is sexy.

Another happily heterosexual male here, but I always thought Harrison Ford was the epitome of ‘ruggedly handsome’ that women are supposed to love. And he has aged very well over the years, IMHO.

The clothes and hair don’t help, and I’m sure he’s more attractive in other settings, but to me he’s so tiny he kinda looks like a boy with a man’s head. That’s very unattractive. And I am not a large woman by any estimation, but he’d still make me feel like a massive heffalump. But it’s always good to see differing opinions! The human race would be doomed if we all found the same things attractive.

I always thought Nathan Fillion of Firefly and Castle was very good-looking, but my ex thought he was hideous and kept talking about how poorly suited he was to the role.

Raj is reasonably handsome, actually. It’s probably why they had to give him even more problems than Sheldon to make him find it hard to stay with women.

He definitely is/was handsome. Though he’s not hugely rugged - he’s fairly ordinary in his features in some ways, but they’re well-proportioned, and he’s tall.

Brad Pitt is very handsome and seems like a nice guy with a sense of humour, so that helps. Leonardo DiCaprio has aged in a way that should make him less attractive, but actually it works on him. Dedication to a serious cause helps. There’s definitely some sort of charisma going on there rather than just the looks.

Tom Ellis from Lucifer is really gorgeous. The way he plays that role is part of it, but he was also in the British sitcom Miranda, where he had a relationship with a woman who is not conventionally attractive, and it was a relatively believable pairing anyway. Being funny and nice makes a big difference, even if it’s just as part of the character you’re playing. Probably one of the reasons I don’t like Howard Wolowitz.

We actually talked about this at home the other day, more along the lines of who we think is definitely conventionally good-looking rather than hot, and my daughter came up with Hugh Dancy from Hannibal. Can’t disagree with that - he’s very pretty. Though looking him up he seems to be much prettier with the facial hair he has in Hannibal than without.

Most of my straight female friends at the moment seem to be very, very into Jason Momoa. It is a lot to do with his looks but from what they’ve said I think they also like that he seems to be a devoted family man, which makes sense. I mean, they’re not actually planning on trying to seduce him, they’re just going on his public image.

It’s funny, but I don’t find either of these two guys attractive in the slightest. Many of my straight female friends agree with yours on Momoa, but to me both he and Pitt look like they could use a good long shower.

Then again, I’m rarely attracted to the popular types. When I was a tween/teen, the hot guys were Leif Garrett, Shaun Cassidy, and Donny Osmond, and they did nothing for me looks-wise. Likewise, I didn’t think Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker was at all hot (Harrison Ford as Han Solo, on the other hand…rrrawr!) I had a thing for Gene Wilder as Willy Wonka, and George Hamilton. I was an odd kid.

I think I’m a pretty bad judge of who other people may may find hot, so I guess I’ll refer to the list below as “Top five guys I’d most want to look like if I wasn’t me”:

Young Paul Newman
Cary Grant, at any age
Burt Lancaster
George Clooney
Hugh Jackman

Simon Helberg still looks like a god to me, but I really appreciate the explanations as to why everyone doesn’t agree. It’s extremely interesting!

If loving Gene Wilder is wrong, I don’t wanna be right.

He was my first crush, at age 6, and I still maintain that his Willy Wonka set the template for a lot of things I still love much later in life!

Excuse me while I catch my breath.

About his small size: My husband is 6’10", so I obviously don’t have a height preference. As they say, size doesn’t matter.

I’m sure he’s used a tooth brush since.

Nobody gonna second Lewis Hamilton?

Must be just me.

How about Sal Mineo?
Maybe it’s just me.

Nobody’s mentioned Adrien Brody.

Out of curiosity (I’m a straight man), are they just generally attractive, or is it specifically Dreymon AS Uhtred and Heughan as Fraser?

The reason I ask is because some of my coworkers agree about Heughan AS Fraser, but don’t find him particularly attractive with normal, 21st century clothing grooming. He’s too pretty or something like that, while 18th century Jamie Fraser is super-hot. I can see Alexander Dreymon being pretty similar- he looks almost girly when not in his Uhtred getup.

I think it gets skewed a bit too by the fact we’re talking about celebrities.

In everyday life, being good-looking is a huge advantage for a man. Not saying it’s the only important thing, just that it’s up there in importance.

Among actors though, many of them are gorgeous compared to our everyday standard, so they may need something else on top of that to catch a lady’s eye

One of the reasons I know I’m not even slightly gay is that, if I were, I’d probably would have been arrested for stalking Neil Patrick Harris at some point. He’s dreamy.

Actually met him once. He’s quite nice and affable in person - his vibe is sort of “Dad with Gravitas”. Which I believe appeals to some people.

I haven’t kept up on the BBT crew but Johnny Galecki was quite buff for a while there (although if you see him without the glasses it’s startling how large a percentage of his face appears to be eyebrow).

Those who fancy the “buff nerd” type might also consider William Jackson Harper, a.k.a. Chidi from The Good Place. The man got all kinds of abs.

Ezra Miller all day long and Bruno Mars.

My teenage poster boys were David Lee Roth, Robert plant and Sly Stallone.

In my world, it stands for Irrational Hate List. All the Ryans, especially Gosling, are on my IHL. I also have an ILL, Irrational Love List.

In the world of dead guys I still crush on, Cary Grant leads the list, followed closely by Paul Newman. In the world of living guys, I gotta add Tom Hiddleston and Tom Ellis to my list.

Nandor the Relentless

So you dislike Ryans, and like Toms. How about Toms Cruise and Hardy?
