The stuff you carry around every day- how much is it all worth?

On the typical day, I have my purse (it was a gift, but I think it was in the $30 range), my wallet ($12, I think), whatever cash I have on hand, an assortment of free pens from drug reps, the $3 sunglasses I got on our honeymoon, my keys, a couple sets of bandage scissors (one set from a drug rep, another set the clinic bought me), my radiation badge, a Timex watch, and my wedding band ($45) (unless my hands are swollen, then I’m wearing a $3 mood ring). At work, I’m wearing scrubs and clogs. At home, I’m wearing $20 jeans and a t-shirt or sweater and cheap sneakers.

I also usually have the dogs with me, but Dr.J assures me they’re both completely worthless.

I have a digital camera that cost me about $US1400, but i wouldn’t say that i carry it around on a regular basis. I have a portable CD player, but i can’t even remember the last time i took that out with me.

I wear a watch, but it was a gift so i don’t know what it’s worth.

Apart from clothes and wallet (usually not much cash) that’s about it. No cellphone, no palm, no mp3player, no laptop.

[slight hijack]

In this part of Baltimore, people are robbed on the street fairly frequently. If i’m going out at night, i take the minimum that i’m likely to need–driver’s licence (for ID in bars etc.), credit card, some cash.

I always leave my wallet behind at night so that if i get robbed i won’t lose all my cards etc. But i also make sure that i always have some cash with me so that i have something to give them.

Oh, all right, $500 to replace the glasses. I’m practically blind, and they require special glass or something.

Oh man, I never thought about this before. Truth is, I’m a big packrat.

Laptop - 2000$
Palm - 300$
Cell phone - free with a contract, probably 100$ otherwise
CD player - 300$

This is shocking to think about. I apparently carry all of my expensive belongings on my back.

Carry around WITH me?

At school (Univ):
Shoes- $80
Clothes- $50-$60
Contact lenses (or glasses): $160
Jewelry: $25
Laptop: $2200
Keys, access cards, etc: about $50 (replacement)
iPod: $450
Cash: no more than $20
Total: $3035 …oh my god.

Not at school:
Shoes- $80
Clothes- $50-$60
Contact lenses (or glasses): $160
Jewelry: $25
iPod: $450
Digital Camcorder/Camera: $500
Cash: no more than $50
Total: $1315 …not as bad, but yikes!

We won’t even get INTO what kinda money could be had if someone swiped my debit card or credit cards.

If you taken into account carrying a key as being equal to someone being able to steal my car, we add $13,000 to the tally.

Aye-- forgot cell phone (duh!): I’d say the average price mine goes for nowadays is about $150

My stuff isn’t fancy, but I don’t mind paying extra if it’s well-made. That said, it is absolutely shocking how much I carry around on a daily basis.

Tote-500
Planner-300
Wallet-200
Jewelry-2500
Key ring-150
Shades- 80
Shoes-300 and up

I feel a bit embarrassed to have spent so much cash on things. If you knew me, would you still respect my materialistic self?

Hmm.

Wallet – $20
Cash therein – $20-$50
Knife – $25
Phone – $100 (random guess; I got it free from a friend when he upgraded)

So I’m not worth mugging on my day off, but at work I carry all that and:

Nikon D1, two lenses, and flash – $5200 or so

Purse:$6
Wallet: Usually empty, I’m a student. If there’s a bus ticket: $10
Wallet itself: ~$50.
Phone: ~$300, I got it in England and it’s not available in Australia so I don’t know the retail value, just the conversion of what I paid.
Credit on the phone (prepaid): <$20
Chapstick: $5
Earplugs: $5 but I’m getting some soon that will be over $150
Small wooden spinning top: Irreplaceable. Retail value ~$1, cost of therapy if I lost it: horrendous (I’m not joking about that, I’d be messed up)
Shoes: $200-$300, depending on which pair I’m wearing.
Orthotics inside the shoes: ~$500 to replace.
Sunglasses: Found them on some rocks at Byron Bay, replacement value: ~$40, not worth stealing because they’re wonky and the lenses fall out sometimes. I’m lost without them so I’d have to work pretty hard to actually lose them.

When uni goes back:
all of the above, except the purse.
Textbooks, equipment and assistive technology: ~$1000
Prescription glasses: $70, $50 if I chose not to get that anti-reflection coating stuff, but I’d have to be poor for that, it’s essential for computer work.
Portable television: not sure, it was a gift, but it’s this one. I’m too lazy to find what it’s worth in Aussie dollars.
Earphones: $30
Backpack to hold all that: ~$50

If I hadn’t lost my hearing aids a few years ago it would be heaps more, I don’t know how much a pair of hearing aids and the remote controlly thingo would cost. I didn’t include clothes because anyone who knows me knows that no one in their right mind would want to steal those. Ooooh yeah, I got style!

I think that’s everything. Wow, that’s a lot of cash tied up in all that for someone without much money or expensive things.
