We’ve got highs in the 60s and 70s for the next couple of days, followed by dropping colder than it is now with highs in the 30s. It’s like there’s been some sort of computer glitch in the weather.
Well, you both probably know that–at this time of year–it’s normal for the valleys along Southern California’s coast to go from 40 degrees in the morning to over 80 in the daytime. I was in the town of El Cajon (near San Diego) recently and noticed it.
Fall weather in Southern California is only hot while the sun is up.
It looks like we got about an inch and a half of snow. It’s about 28º and sunny now. No more precipitation expected until Wednesday or Thursday, when it will be too warm to snow.
We got 3". Although it’s mostly melted, it’s still wet and the temps are dropping so it will be pretty icy out there.
Roads are icy here, and I had to get the snow off of the car before we went to the market.
Currently 26ºF and a little breezy. ‘Feels like 17º’.
It was 11F last night. A mite chilly.
But fine with flannel sheets and a blankie!
It’s not supposed to get below freezing in coastal NC
I don’t remember it being this cold before Obama took office
I pulled out my Sorels. The fleece is deteriorated, but I managed to find a replacement pair on eBay. I don’t know when it will actually be cold enough to wear them, but they’ll be ready.
The SO wore her N-2B for the first time in two years.
Here in Tacoma, I woke up around 7:30 to the sound of snow plopping against the windows. Could sorta see the big clumpy flakes but didn’t put on my glasses for a better look. Just burrowed down deeper in the bed and went back to sleep. By the time I woke again the snow was done. There were patches of it about but more areas that were snow-free.
The roof on the building across the alley retains more rainwater than a roof in the Pacific Northwest should, IMHO. When I first noticed it this morning, it was completely iced over. By noon, it had all melted. When I looked out around 4 o’clock, I saw that a good portion of the surface had refrozen so I pulled a chair over to the window and watched the ice’s progress. By the time the sun had set, the wind was rippling just a small section of free water and by near full dark, looking through my binoculars for better vision, I could see that was gone. It was kind of interesting to see the progression in a relatively short time.
If this cold snap had happened on Thanksgiving I wonder how much snow we would have wound up with? Rain showers, interspersed with sun breaks, kept rolling through all day. I counted no less than six separate rainbows in that time and Scrub Jay saw one before I’d gotten up. Made it a pretty cool turkey day.
Would it be uncool of me to post, “Boo freaking hoo”? ![]()
(We could skate on our roads right now - could we get some Goddamned sand put down, please?!?)
Hey, I just had to put on a jacket – a jacket! – when I went outside!
I forgot to turn my heater on. Woke up feeling a bit chilly, not realizing the heater had been off all night. The thermostat showed 70 degrees at 5:15am.
I love the desert! At least for the 4 months of the year where there aren’t any 100+ degree days, anyway.
Tonight’s forecast from Environment Canada for my area:
69° at the reporting station a half-mile from here. Supposed to drop 30° in the next 24-hours.
Here’s how much it changed here between Saturday and Sunday:
This morning it was -4 F.
I’ve noticed that, once in awhile, weather apps can be spectacularly wrong. For several days, we’d been eagerly anticipating a major rainfall here in San Diego, and it began late yesterday, more or less on schedule. We haven’t been disappointed. But on Monday, when I happened to check one of my apps, it informed me that yesterday and today were going to be in the upper 90s without any rain in sight. Actually, I believe this came from the built-in weather widget, rather than an app. Meanwhile, the forecast from my AccuWeather app remained accurate.
I got home and slid into the ditch a little ways because I couldn’t get over that pesky slippery bump at the top of the driveway. I felt like telling my father “You have one job! Do whatever needs to be done to get me over the pesky slippery bump!” He bought sand the other day but it was OK when he went out earlier and he didn’t think it was needed. Well, since the time you went out, it’s been drizzling onto the snow left over from last night and it’s nice and greasy.
Once again my thoughts turn to getting a 4WD car.
That’s rough, man. Hang in there.
I do alright with my front wheel drive car and snow tires. I mean, I’m not racing around and slamming on the brakes or anything, but nobody should be doing that on icy roads, anyway.
I do fine on the road, it’s just this daggum pesky slippery bump. I can get a running start but it’s sometimes just … not … quite … enough… and I slide backwards into the ditch. Then I get through another winter and dreams of a Subaru Crosstrek fade away till next year!
