The trials and tribulations of the LBMB

I know that some other folks over here occasionally still visit the LBMB, so I thought I’d let you know how the place has, if you’ll forgive the pun, gone to hell of late.

(For the uninitiated–the LBMB is the Left Behind Message Board, a board for fans of the popular Left Behind series of books that deal with life after the rapture. It tends to draw in the very fundiest of Fundies, but you can usually find a pretty good range of Christian opinion there. There was a much-ballyhooed altercation between members of this board and that one a few months ago, and a few of us stuck around when the dust settled.)

First of all, a few weeks back, there was a poster named Tibeten Shepherd who was a rather obnoxious troll. Many e-mails were placed to the Admin of the board (a faceless entity creatively named “Admin”), to no avail. TS was never banned, and indeed posted again just a day or two ago. Everyone chalked it up to absentee landlord.

Not too long thereafter, strange things started happening. Ghoti, one of the more well-respected posters on the board, was inexplicably banned, and requests to Admin for an explanation went unanswered. Then, another poster tried to start a thread about marital intimacy (nothing shocking, even by their standards) and the thread was locked without explanation. Later, a thread about abortion (not unlike a million others that had gone through there) was also locked. (There were other incidents, but I’ve really only caught most of it second-hand.)

Requests to Admin for an explanation for any of this were first ignored, and then were locked and deleted. More recently, any thread that was the least bit critical of Admin’s actions was locked and deleted. Still yet, Admin is nothing more than an anonymous username that has never interacted with anyone. (It finally started placing a cheesy form letter at the end of each of the closed threads, which really only made things worse.)

(It should be noted that tensions on the board were high anyway, as most of the discussion in the last month or so has been Catholics vs. Protestants, with some posters bent on tearing down the Catholic Church and not caring to hurt feelings along the way.)

Some of the “board elders” created rival boards, and many of the regulars flocked to them. Others resorted to civil disobedience, such as copying closed anti-Admin threads and posting them in another thread, continuing the discussion until Admin closed the new thread and the process repeated. All anyone really wants is for Admin to come out from behind the curtain and to get over him/her/itself, but it appears that it isn’t going to happen.

I am telling the story here for two reasons–first of all, I wanted the occasional LBMB lurkers over here to know what was going down. It’s really unfortunate, since it used to be a good place to hear opinions that totally differed from mine, even if they didn’t tend to be very tolerant of non-believers.

Also, I wanted to say how great it is to have moderators who are also active and respected members of the community. After seeing the result of anonymous and robotic administration over there, I think we take this aspect of the SDMB for granted. You folks do a great job, and we can’t thank you enough.

Dr. J

Yeah, Doc. I have been chtting with a few friends from that board and they have told me the horror stories.

It’s ironic, since I was planning on possibly going back to hand and ask some questions again. Oh well…

What a melodrama! I have never posted at that board, but when I heard the rest of you on SDMB mention it, I did lurk now and then. Really bizarre what is happening. I will have to go and lurk some more, just out of morbid curiosity.

Actually, it was between the Catholics and the super-fundamentalist Fundamentals, mainly those who attend the Assembly of God church.

Just a note…I used to post over there as Kinsey23, and I will NEVER go back.
My Lutheran church just formed an alliance with the Episcopalian church, to share pastors and sacraments in times of need. Some people over there, with no Lutheran or Episcopalian affiliation, and no real knowledge of the alliance, other than what they read in the paper, started calling this alliance “unholy”, an “abomination” and decided that these 2 churches were on the verge of forming the Whore of Babylon church or something, and they (Lutherans and Episcopalians) needed to be watched and monitored to see what other evil they were up to.

They have been bashing the Catholics for a while. They seem to think anyone who is Catholic is an idol-worshiper, and they refuse to listen to reason. They spout scripture (which is REALLY easy with on-line Bible verse searchers) and twist it around to fit their agenda.

Most of the LB’ers are quite nice, but there are some (Shemadut, Sierra, AuntiTracy, and others) who are just plain mean and petty and incredibly narrow-minded. I am all for a good theological debate, but not when it disinegrates into name-calling and denomination-bashing. If you don’t believe exactly the way they believe, and if your church does something slightly different (like how often you take Communion), then they will jump all over you, saying you are wrong and going to hell. Really nice Christian attitude to show to lurkers and visitors, huh?

I just checked it out. In the past when I lurked, I could just go straight to the MB. This time, I had to “sign in”, and give an email address. Icky. (I gave a fake name, and a dead email address.)

I also noticed on their front page - they say “Welcome to the new Left Behind”, and there are mentions of “revamping”. Obviously along with the “revamping” came this mysterious change of behavior and policy from “Admin”.

Well, Doc, I wish I could say this was surprising, but it’s not.

The admin there has been lying for quite a while. Apparently, it’s not a sin anymore.

Back when we were over there, certain threads dealing with controversial subjects mysteriously disappeared (for example, creation/evolution threads in which the creationists were obviously coming out in second place). When we would ask about it, we’d get cryptic non-responses, like one saying that the system automatically deletes any thread that hasn’t been posted to in 3 weeks or so – problem was this was a thread that had been started less than 3 DAYS earlier.

Ironically, ghoti was one of those who defended the admin – and who took advantage of their deletions by asking the same questions over and over again, knowing full well that we’d already answered them and debunked his claims in the threads that were now deleted. I do wonder what he did to get himself deleted, though.

Of course, one of the LBMB’s rules has long been:

And someday they might actually enforce it. But I guess that’s another of those post-Trib events they go on about.

C’mon, RTF, you know that only applies when their ox is being gored. If you’re going after Mormons or Catholics or Jews, it’s perfectly OK.

Or, as Kinsey points out, Episcopalians and Lutherans. :frowning:

At the risk of being associated with Rush:

Ditto, Doctor J.

As a LBMB regular I gotta add something.

Yeah it’s all kaflooey over there, as evidenced by the fact that I am over here…

However, when this mess all started, Admin was changing over. The “divine” Mike Bagnall and his entourage were giving up their admin duties over to the faceless few that are governing now. I believe the new admin, though seemingly clueless, are trying to change the boards over there. To what end I am not sure.

As for the mean-spirited and rude posters over there, well, they have been dealt with by members of the boards as needed. So now the Narrow Road Forum is being built back up from the bottom.

And Satan, I still have that autographed pillowcase and the baby…So why not come back over and post something interesting to wake us all up and see how long it takes for you to be banned?

I was a regular poster over there for a long time- actually joined to argue the Catholic/protestant issue, being catholic myself.

Well, I became an avid poster, although I learned to ignore the Catholic/Protestant threads when they came up, because they made me very angry, and weren’t worth argueing over.

I began visiting less when I started my current job- just no time. When I did visit, I realized the tone of the boards, especially Narrow Road, was becoming more and more small minded, and debating with people who would not listen had lost it’s appeal. The last time I was there, I saw the closed threads, and the others about the closures and bannings, and I decided not to go back. One of the things that I liked about the boards was the discussion. So I decided to quit. They don’t appeal to me at all, and I choose not to return.

If they’re rebuilding “Narrow Road” perhaps they should rename it properly – “Narrow Mind.”

I used to post regularly at the LBMB but now I can’t stomach it. The catholic/protestant threads were bad enough, but when admin disappeared things went completely down the drain. Thankfully some of the regulars created alternate boards that are attracting a lot of refugees from LB.

I seem to still be banned from when they banned SDMB/LBMB crossposters (sounds kinky, doesn’t it? Maybe that’s why they banned us!) at the end of last year. Of course, I’ve never bothered to email anyone over there to request reinstatement. Since I’ve been kicked out of better places than that ;), I’ve had no burning desire to beg to have my posting privileges restored.

DoctorJ, et al.

Thanks for the information. I have never registered. I lurk over there occasionally, but I haven’t been over there in months. While I disagree with the whole premise of the board fundamentally, I still find it sad to see the place is so disrupted.

It’s easy to take the moderators and administrators for granted. I’m glad ours do such outstanding jobs.
