And they will refuse the subpeona because its in contradiction of their NDA, and then they will be taken to court which will say that their argument is ludicrous, and then they will appeal that decision to a court that also finds their argument ludicrous but they will keep appealing until they find a court with enough Trump appointees to find in their favor or more likely run out the clock.
That’s why the straighforward matter of the Terry Schiavo case went on so long.

That’s probably an apt analogy. And it may be a key to how this unravels. A lot of the people in the Trump administration know they face possible criminal charges. But they also know that the ones who switch sides early and testify against the others will escape punishment and be able to sign lucrative book deals.
In a normal corrupt administration, they could at least count on the protection of a pardon. But Trump is notorious for his lack of loyalty and his unwillingness to follow through on promises. He might end up pardoning himself and his family and leave everyone else out in the cold.
Sp right now, I’m sure there are White House staffers eyeing each other and wondering who will break and how soon. And trying to figure out when’s the best time to seek their own deal.
I was discussing fascism in another thread. I don’t think Trump has it in him to be a fascist dictator. If you read biographies of people like Hitler, Mussolini, Stalin, and Mao you understand how hard they worked at being a dictator. Trump may have the moral values of a dictator but he doesn’t have the drive. You can’t be a dictator and spend two hours a day watching TV.
But Trump could end up turning America into a fascist dictatorship. I don’t find it realistic that Trump could become a dictator. But if he gets re-elected, he’s going to drive the country even further downhill in the next four years. And I find it plausible that some time in the next four years, we’ll see somebody saying we need to save the country from Trump by taking over control. And it’s that person who might become America’s dictator.

Motives and opportunities are different things, and do not often coincide as well as they have for Trump, pretty much his entire life. Anything he has wanted, he has gotten. He wants this, he expects this.
If he were the used car salesman that he should be, his desires to exert control over everything would come to naught.
He’s not a genius breaking out of the escape room, he’s a slime mold oozing through the cracks. He’s dangerous, hard to contain, and corrupts everything he touches.
I do worry that McConnell et al are setting up an authoritarian system for their own use, but I worry even more that they will not be able to contain the monster that they create. One is dystopia, the other is Armageddon.
My preference, of course, is that we have free and fair elections and elect rational individuals who will put the future of our country and world ahead of their own short sighted interests, and we call the last few years a bit of interesting history.
