We’ve sent thousands of people to jail over the years for failure to pay parking tickets, possessing minuscule amounts of marijuana, being homeless, etc., etc.
The difference is they weren’t white, middle-class suburban people.
See, this is an ongoing issue - you got people with a bit of power who have no problem holding down other groups, all the while having no clue that eventually the oppressive structures they build will one day come for them.
You really think so? I think his base will be all “Man, trump really trolled the Libtards hard, shitting in his pants on live TV like that. I like him more than ever now!”
§ 14-2.5. Punishment for attempt to commit a felony or misdemeanor.
Unless a different classification is expressly stated, an attempt to commit a misdemeanor or a felony is punishable under the next lower classification as the offense which the offender attempted to commit. An attempt to commit a Class A or Class B1 felony is a Class B2 felony, an attempt to commit a Class B2 felony is a Class C felony, an attempt to commit a Class I felony is a Class 1 misdemeanor, and an attempt to commit a Class 3 misdemeanor is a Class 3 misdemeanor. (1993, c. 538, s. 6; 1994, Ex. Sess., c. 22, s. 11, c. 24, s. 14(b).)
All it takes is 1 magat to try to vote twice to elevate the charge to a felony. Considering he got followers to poison themselves, I think it’s safe to assume someone will vote twice.
What happens if someone does vote twice on purpose, as he requested? Yes, in a perfect world, they’d be arrested, but I’m sure instead they’d be heralded as a hero by the Justice Department. But what about their votes? Are they both invalidated? Is the first vote still counted?
This whole kerfuffle started the systems quality control portion of my brain to start whirring. How do election systems prevent this? Do they match voter names from in-person logs, with returned mail-in ballots? That would mean that all mail-in ballots are provisional until election day…what about states that count ballots as soon as they arrive? Do they have a way of backing out those ballots if an in-person match occurs?
People here in rural Appalachia(aka Trumpers) are terrified by the protests. Trump has convinced them that these rioters are coming here next. Irrational? Oh, hell yes, but it’s absolutely working. Because he’s saturating Fox and every other conservative media outlet with this message. Loudly & repeatedly. Meanwhile, Democrats are whispering on select outlets about their climate change plan. As the OP said Democrats need to speak up. Where are the ads showing flaming cities with overlays of Trump’s ‘making America great’ statements. Where are the ads explaining, simply and clearly, what no payroll tax means for social security. Ads showing piles of dead COVID patients. Trumpers are never going to change their minds based on facts or plans, Democrats need to show strength, not reason.
Also, there’s nothing wrong with a little fear-mongering. After all, most of us here on the SDMB fear a Trump 2nd term - for very good reasons. I see nothing wrong with taking a lower road and communicating those reasons to America in a more hard-hitting and brutal way.
We’ve been reasonable and logical and accommodating and fair-minded. It’s clear that the high road is not going where it needs to go.
