I wondered about this, too. The charitable thing to think was that, in light of the record turnouts at the opening of early voting, Trump supporters were merely there to express enthusiasm for their guy as a response. The uncharitable thing to think is that they were simply outraged by the whole concept of early voting and were there to intimidate voters who they perceived were mostly Democratic.
Maybe this is the 2020 election in microcosm. Trump voters are louder and more visible with their yard signs and truck and boater rallies while Biden voters quietly show up and outvote them by 15 million votes.
The Trump cheerleaders want only their own guy in charge. I have no doubt they would target - hopefully, just verbally - anyone they came to a snap decision would not be for their guy. Depending on who those cheerleaders are, that could mean black people, brown people, people with foreign accents, people perceived to be gay, or any other category of “not-us”.
Procrustus, I don’t know the answer to your question. But the Don has been pretty clear about wanting all voting to take place in person Nov. 3 and insinuating – well, maybe more than insinuating – that all other votes are illegitimate.
Somewhere in the forum earlier today I posted a link to a great New Yorker piece detailing the great Blue Shift we’re possibly looking at on Nov. 3, whereby Trump leads after in person votes are counted but loses once the mail votes are calculated. This is where he is hoping that his muddying the waters along with a friendly Supreme Court tactics are going to get him another four years.
The real nightmare is finding out after the shenanigans have worked that Trump actually lost in overwhelming fashion, at which point Republicans will shrug and say “them’s the breaks.”
I can only hope. Man, I am really trying not to get too optimistic but that scene gave me hope.
So many people, masked, in a heavily Democratic district turning out to vote with a small loud crowd of crazy Trump supporters hanging out to inspire them and remind them why they are there. I wonder how many people saw that line, thought “I’ll just come back later“, then saw the MAGAbots and said “No, I’m doing this NOW no matter how long it takes”
Hey, I’m not objecting to people outside polling places - when I have time I’ll often speak with those folks either on my way in or out. As long as they’re courteous and polite, not if they are starting to look like a mob.
I may be a little hypersensitive to these situations, but after living in St. Louis, Detroit, Chicago, and Gary, Indiana that sort of awareness has kept me from some very nasty situations.
If things were really dicey I might even go so far as to lie about whom I am voting for to get past such a group, but I won’t change my vote for anyone.
The right wing website Red State has been running anti-Fauci and anti-Covid 19 articles for months, written by an anonymous contributor. Among other things this anonymous person has written, the people on the coronavirus task force should be hanged and their bodies left up to rot.
Turns out he works for Fauci. RedState COVID Troll Streiff is Actually Bill Crews, and He Actually Works for Dr. Anthony Fauci?
The judge that is being touted as the front runner for the Supreme Court is a member of a cult within the Catholic Church called The People of Praise. Margaret Atwood said she based The Hadmaid’s Tale on this cult. Every person in the cult is assigned a head, if they’re male, or a handmaid, if they’re female. They control whom the members marry, and how they raise their children. They also believe that men have total control over their wives.
Barrett also says that a “legal career is but a means to an end … and that end is building the Kingdom of God.”
Through deluded voters and a series of shenanigans, we have in place a Republican Senate, a largely conservative judiciary, and a criminally insane POTUS. But somehow, the Democrats have been expected somehow to magically keep them at bay on the off chance there’s still enough of our Republic left to do something about it. Basically, this is on us for letting a bunch of reactionary extremists into the government. Putting that much blame on the Dems for failing to protect us from our own bad choices is a terrible form of victim blaming.
There’s a reason we all wanted RBG to hang on until January, and it’s precisely because there really are a limited number of things the Dems can do. I sincerely hope they pull out every trick in the bag, but this is no guarantee at all this would be sufficient. The most I hope and expect is they do use every trick, but I am under no delusions that this would be sufficient on its own.
The DOJ has declared New York, Portland, and Seattle as “anarchist jurisdictions”, which, under an Individual 1 executive order, means they will no longer receive federal funds.
