Trump is hoping to start a civil war; Rural versus Urban. This is obviously trying to provoke a confrontation.
I see posts popping up in other sites I look at regularly that are fully in favor of this, and want the military to start shooting democrats. They are openly calling for execution of opposing politicians, rounding up democrats and forming squads to “deal with problems”.
These are not necessarily whack-jobs. These are regular folks posting this kind of rhetoric.
Bad times are coming.
Ask yourself: what would happen if at 2am all the right wing militia types and all the CBP/Homeland Security/Police got a text that said “go now and do it”?
What would happen if President Trump, at 2am, tweeted “Boogaloo!” ?
What if they all coordinated to do that?
If they did it at 2am I would be up reading Straight Dope and they wouldn’t get very far.

With their poll numbers sinking toward the bottom like a rock in a lake, this is their last chance to maintain their grip on power. Keep in mind that they’re not just trying to stay in power because they’re a bunch of tax cut fanatics. They’re scared of being investigated and prosecuted by a Biden administration – and that’s what makes them dangerous. This is a classic case of an authoritarian government violating laws to maintain power and, knowing that they’ll be targeted by the rule of law if they lose power, deciding to do whatever they can to stay in power by any means necessary.
Bad times are coming, indeed. Right now, they’re normalizing federal police thuggery, but it’s a process of social conditioning that will escalate over time. Trump has been conditioning Americans to tolerate abuses of power since before he took office. It’s the ‘banalization’ of authoritarianism.

Well, now that they control the numbers, they can start reporting how great a job they are doing.
Yes. This has been ramping up for the past 40 years, accelerating in the past 20. Those “ordinary folks” have been trained to listen only to one side’s approved news sources and dismiss everything else, to regard anyone not like them as The Enemy.
Yes, bad times ahead unless this can somehow be defused by next January.
I’m normally an optimist, but I am not feeling optimistic now.
And with the borders closed from the outside due to covid, because we’re such a cesspit of infection, it will be impossible for anyone to flee elsewhere. And Trump has so alienated the rest of the world I don’t think anyone else will give a fuck what happens to people in the US. There will be no help from outside, no cavalry.
TV ratings and polls – those are the only numbers that count.

He probably can rely on rally attendance (even if not as robust as in the past), but making the people who might actually vote for you sick or dead is bad strategy.

THAT is the question. Trump, McConnell, and their cronies are going to use every dirty trick they can to keep Democrats from voting and to make sure any votes they do cast are not counted.
And if that means sending in armed federal troops to cities that vote for Democrats, that’s just what they’ll do.
