Why did Trump wait from early February (when shortages of equipment were first identified) until April 2 to use the DPA to provide supplies to medical personnel? The ideological objections of the Chamber of Commerce and other corporate interests played a role. But the larger reason looks political: Nationalizing supply chains means assuming responsibility, which Trump dreads. It’s easier to falsely accuse fatigued doctors of hoarding, snatch precious ventilators from blue state governors, and otherwise inject petty politics into matters of life and death.

When Trump later attacks “that woman” (Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, a Democrat), and says that he has told Vice President Pence not to call back any governor who is “not appreciative,” he is placing his ego above the lives of the people of Michigan and other states with Democratic governors.

After this is over, you know there will be several analyses that will estimate how many additional Americans died that might not have had this clusterfuck had been competent (say, like following the pandemic response “playbook” they were handed during the transition, not disbanding the NSC pandemic team, not playing politics by lying about the “hoax” virus, being an actual President instead of just wanting to play one on TV and at rallies, not living in an egotistical fantasy world, etc…

Fox News and the rest of the Trump acolytes have already begun constructing a new reality. One in which Trump acted first; Got all the supplies needed even before the states asked for them; and reversed the destructive policies of the terrible Democrats who denied that the virus was a problem.

Of course it is 180 degrees removed from ACTUAL reality. But doublethink will enable millions upon millions of Americans to believe it, and swear on their bibles that it is true.

My memory very well might not be the best, but I do not recall President Obama stacking his cabinet with acting secretaries. Did he even have one acting secretary during his tenure?

That’s not really what I said, though; I literally said that I wanted this to be a disaster and that I wanted the healthcare system and the economy collapse (at a time when this appears to be actually happening, mind you).

I later tried to nuance that in my exchange with Monty, in which I basically clarified by saying that I want this to be bad enough so that people actually fucking learn something from it.

Understand something: it’s already bad, already a disaster. The question is whether it’s bad enough for us to learn any lessons. Are enough of the right people - the persuadable, reachable type - going to go from simply shrugging their shoulders and accepting Trump because "Woo! Hoo! we have more jobs and Amazon now pays $15 an hour…to actually having a Eureka moment and waking the fuck up about how bad conservative politics is and how it’s ruining our society.

Ideally, nobody would die; we would just be a curious enough lot to find enlightenment on our own. But I’ve watched over and over again as this country gets suckered by right wing lies and I don’t just blame the right wing propagandists - lying is what they do. I blame voters who either like the lies they’re being told or who are just otherwise indifferent. I want it to be bad enough to the point where we can actually benefit from this. There’s nothing really pathological about it.
