Look, I have maintained enough detachment that I can look at the global situation and concede that this situation is a disaster for every nation, no matter what kind of government they have. Yes, we could have done better here, less people could have died, but this was going to hit us no matter who was sitting in the Big Chair.

All right. But then I look at this hydroxychlorolquine situation and my detachment dissolves into being pissed off. Trump owns a stake in Sanofi, the maker of the drug. He went on TV to promote it repeatedly, before any research had been done on it. Now some results are coming in, and it turns out More COVID patients die if you give them this drug compared to just leaving them alone.

So, in the midst of a pandemic that I estimate will kill ~400k Americans before it is through, Trump took the opportunity to sell poisonous snake oil. I can forgive human imperfection, but God fucking damn it, that is downright evil :mad:

As I said somewhere, yeah, this would be HARD ENOUGH if the federal government were ON OUR SIDE and everyone was working together. But trump and his ilk are working for themselves and AGAINST the nation. Do I need to cite* that Unca Mitch said that governors should let their states go bankrupt rather than expect “free money”? What does he think federal money IS FOR? I guess, like Jared, he believes the money is “ours,” meaning…?

I personally know a number of people that over the years have had their lives saved at Baystate.

There are obviously-worrying things about a President suggesting that injecting people with disinfectant could be a good idea.

One less-obvious thing about it, though: that Trump has clearly been assured that no matter what votes get cast in November, he will remain President (i.e. “safe from prosecution”). Because what else could possibly lead him to make suggestions that he KNOWS will be taken up by his own voters—and will kill them?

I hate to be in the position of defending Trump, but Snopes says Trump’s investment in Sanofi is via mutual funds and extremely minor. Also, it’s a generic drug, so it’s low profit, and theoretically any drug company can produce it.

The clip I saw involved first some official talking about studies of the lifespan of the virus under different conditions: indoors, outdoors with sunlight, sprayed with bleach, sprayed with isopropyl alcohol.

Then there was an edit, and Trump is talking about getting sunlight inside the body and injecting people specifically with bleach and isopropyl alcohol. I assume it isn’t a trick of editing. So- dumbest suggestion by Trump yet?
