The Trump Administration: The Clusterfuck Continues (Part 2)

What does someone have to do to get one of those seats? Can I, as an ordinary citizen, announce that I will attend oral arguments at the Court, show up, and be guaranteed a seat? If I can’t, how does Trump? Can the lawyers who are arguing reserve space to bring guests?

No idea. But Trump is a special boy who gets TWO scoops of ice cream at a party.

There’s a lottery system where you can request seats for certain cases. Otherwise, you can just show up the morning of and hope you get in.

Online Ticketing - Request - Welcome

It certainly doesn’t sound like Trump’s presence had the desired effect, because the conservative judges aren’t buying what Sauer is selling.

"GORSUCH: Do you think Native Americans are birthright citizens under your test?

SAUER: Ah, I think … so. I have to think that through."

Sounds like this is gonna be at LEAST 7-2 against Trump.

It’s a new world. It’s the same constitution. — John Roberts

Love it.

I very much doubt that Trump did either of those. How did he get in, and how did he know in advance that he would?

As someone not really involved in the case, he should have to go through the same process as the rest of us schlubs.

I’m betting with 47 there, the Solicitor General was playing to the audience of one behind him, rather than the audience of nine in front of him. That’s not a winning choice.

I’m betting that Sauer not only can’t pronounce Stare decisis, he doesn’t understand it either.

True, but it is only a building and can be rebuilt, unlike the damage he has done to our international relationships, both allies and adversaries.

It would be effective if demolition and construction contractors were put on notice that his nibs has no authority to authorize either and they are liable to be sued. I mean, if my neighbor thought my house was an eyesore and had it torn down when I was on vacation you betcha I’d be suing both him and the dim-bulbs he hired.

It is tempting to leave it as it is right now with a Trump did this sign as a warning to future generations of voters.

If only he would be.

Dipstick still claims the US is the only country in the world with birthright citizenship. It’s so sad that there is nobody in his inner circle with the guts to tell him he’s full of shit. Of course, the MAGA rubes still believe every word.

So who stood up for whom - did Trump stand for the justices, or did the justices stand for Trump?

That’s kind of the point. Wonder if the Solicitor General would make the same argument viz a viz the second amendment. Nobody uses rifled muskets any more.

On that subject, it varies. Our argument on the pro side is that it’s in the US Constitution. From the Washington Post today:

How is birthright citizenship seen around the world?

Only about three dozen countries, nearly all of them in the Americas, guarantee citizenship to children born on their territory.

Most countries follow the principle of jus sanguinis, or “right of blood,” with a child’s citizenship based on the citizenship of their parents, no matter where they are born.

None of the 27 member states of the European Union, for example, grant automatic, > unconditional citizenship to children born on their territories to foreign citizens. The situation is similar across much of Asia, the Middle East and Africa.

Some countries take a mixed approach

Some countries use a combination of principles, such as parenthood, residency and ethnicity, to decide a child’s citizenship.

Australia, for example, allowed birthright citizenship until 1986. But starting that August, children born there could only become citizens if at least one parent was an Australian citizen or a permanent resident.

Things shifted the other way in Germany, which changed its citizenship laws in 2024. Until then, citizenship by birth required that at least one parent was German. Starting in 2024, though, children born in Germany to non-German parents are automatically granted German citizenship if one parent has been legally living in the country for more than five years with unlimited residency status.

Citizenship laws were liberalized because “studies have shown that the education prospects of children and teenagers with a migration background are better, the sooner they were granted German citizenship,” the government wrote at the time.

That’s so perfectly hypocritical a thing for a Republican to say!
Usually it’s a brag or a point of pride when a Republican touts the fact that 'Murica Goddammit is the only country where dot dot dot.
While I’m here: Fuck off Trump, and the same goes to all Republicans.

Sauer’s a very experienced attorney who’s argued many cases before the SC. He was the one arguing the Tariff case for trump. He comes across as an obnoxious bulldog jerk. Having a voice just like RFKjr’s doesn’t help. Exactly the kind of person trump would love.

Let’s check in on Trump’s mental state ahead of tonight’s Major Announcement.

“Indianapolis, Minnesota”

“We can’t take care of daycare”

“Charlie Kirk loved that woman right there. I have people turn on me a lot. I think a really big turn would be Erika”

“Christians like Israel more than Jews do”

…they better hope the Adderall kicks in fast.

Was that Frankie Pentangeli’s brother sitting next to Trump at the Supreme Court?

For FUCK’S SAKE, how stupid can you get. For one thing, only about a quarter of the world’s population is physically capable of giving birth to a child, on US soil or anywhere else.

For another thing, it’s estimated that about 80% of the world population has never even set foot on an airplane. The people who realistically have the option of taking a plane ride to the US are not the people who might be tempted to do so just to have an American “anchor baby”.

For a third thing, does John Sauer imagine that the comparative rapidity of air travel somehow makes it quicker or easier to have a baby? It’s not like taking a selfie in Times Square, dumbass! You can’t just pop over to America at a moment’s notice to pop out a baby, even if the journey only takes 10-20 hours by plane instead of 10-20 days by ship!

So in that sense, it’s not a new fucking world at all. The comparatively wealthy quintile of the world’s population are able to travel to the US pretty much at will, just like they always could, while the poorest people who might be desperate enough to try to wangle US residency via a “birthright citizen” American baby can’t afford the trip, just like they always couldn’t.

Nailed it!

I’m hoping Jon McNaughton is going into ubridled hysterics (my definition of Trump Derangement Syndrome) after seeing those nice Trump sketches upthread.

Supremes will rule on this 9-0.
