When and where did that gender rumor come from anyway? I seem to remember it starting during Obama’s second term, well before the 2016 campaigns started. Around the time Michelle was into her nutrition program for kids in schools.

It’s a really efficient way to say, “in this subculture, it’s okay to be racist AND sexist AND homophobic,” without actually coming out and saying it. Anyone receptive to the rumour demonstrates sympathy to that poisonous trifecta.
A responsible leader would, of course, make it clear that such nonsense was not to be tolerated. As to where and when, the Venn diagram of “sufficiently famous Obamas” + “percevied need to be sexist, racist, and homophobic,” so it probably began shortly after Michelle achieved some celebrity as First Lady.

Exactly this. The “Michelle Obama is secretly a man” rumor is a way to signal to like-minded people that you’re part of the “in group” without actually using the n-word. And you can back slap other Klan members and congratulate each other on your “cleverness” over the in-joke. (A shibboleth of sorts I suppose. I don’t for a second believe anyone perpetuating this rumor seriously believes Michelle Obama is not biologically a woman)
I imagine the psychology goes something like - black women don’t qualify as “Real Women” because a “Real American Woman” is white, with long blonde hair, and has a “MAGA face.” They don’t check enough boxes in the racist suppositions in their twisted little minds. And yes, I know I’m being incredibly pessimistic right now and I apologize for that.
I don’t know if it’s possible to trace it back to a single person or event or time, but I know I heard rumors about this back when Obama was still in office. It probably started among the tea partiers of the time, which were a precursor of the modern MAGA cult.
It’s more that first she isn’t stupid and subservient like a “real woman” is, second it’s insulting her by misgendering her, and it’s also a way of implying that her husband is gay.

I hadn’t really thought of it that way but it makes sense. As they did with Obama’s place of birth, they know full well Michelle isn’t a man*, but it’s a great way to identify yourself as a member of the group while simultaneously owning the libs.
