Sept 1 (Reuters) - The U.S. State Department has proposed requiring parents applying for passports for their children to provide proof of their own citizenship or immigration status as part of President Donald Trump’s latest effort to limit birthright citizenship.
The draft guidance, reviewed by Reuters, is the first detailed look at how the State Department could enforce Trump’s August 6 executive order targeting what it calls “birth tourism” and broadening historical exceptions to birthright citizenship.
The White House referred Reuters questions to the State Department. In a statement, State Department spokesman Tommy Pigott said that “President Trump has been unequivocal that this Administration will protect the meaning and value of American citizenship, full stop, and that includes making sure our passport adjudication process fully reflects that standard."
This is basically a bronx cheer to the Supreme Court and, of course, the constitution.

A pioneering online mapping app that defied Donald Trump by refusing to rename Lake Ontario has become the most in-demand navigation tool in the US.
MapQuest, which was openly dismissive of the president’s 27 August executive order directing federal agencies to refer to the smallest of the Great Lakes as “Lake America” amid a trade spat with Canada, leapfrogged rivals Google Maps and Apple Maps to top the most-downloaded list, as first reported by TechCrunch .
The app held the No 1 spot on Apple’s App Store as of Tuesday morning, the Guardian confirmed.
Google quickly capitulated to Trump’s demand, showing Lake America to US customers, while Apple is reportedly mulling a decision under pressure from the White House to make the same change.
But MapQuest, a 30-year-old company that bills itself as “the OG ” (original) of the internet mapping era, appears to have been rewarded for standing firm.

In a highly unusual move, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is not counting two measles-associated deaths reported by the state of Pennsylvania in its measles death tally , saying it doesn’t have enough information to determine whether measles caused or contributed to the fatalities.
The decision to exclude the deaths from the weekly update came from the CDC’s new director, Dr. Erica Schwartz, according to two people with knowledge of the decision.
The move escalates a feud between US Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and the state’s Democratic governor, Josh Shapiro, as the Keystone State seeks to extinguish a growing measles outbreak there.
Pennsylvania health officials have said they thoroughly investigated the details of both deaths before announcing them.
“Every reported measles case is thoroughly reviewed to confirm it meets the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) case definition for a measles case. To date, DOH has provided all required epidemiological data to the CDC regarding the two measles-associated deaths in Pennsylvania,” said Neil Ruhland, press secretary for the Pennsylvania Department of Health.
The CDC delayed its weekly Friday measles data update, and when it was finally posted over the weekend, the number of deaths for 2026 was listed as an asterisk and a footnote: “This week’s measles outbreaks update will not include the two measles-associated deaths reported by the Pennsylvania Department of Health on August 25 while CDC reviews additional information regarding the circumstances and causes of death. At this time, available information does not establish whether measles caused or contributed to the deaths or whether the individuals died from other causes while infected with measles. CDC will update the national count as additional information becomes available.”

Days after announcing what it calls the largest oil deal in history, the Trump administration has filled in the details.
A fact sheet released on Monday night by the White House named North American Blue Energy Partners (NABEP) as the operator at the centre of the arrangement, disclosed the ownership structure for the first time and set out what Washington gets in return.
Venezuela’s interim authorities have granted NABEP 100-year concessions over 17 fields with the agreement signed by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth.

The US president also reasserted that American majors were queuing up to be a part of the takeover of Venezuelan oil fields.

President Donald Trump said violence in Chicago had “never been worse” following a weekend in which dozens of people were shot, but the city’s latest police data shows violent crime is down overall this year and remains well below its recent peaks.
“Chicago violence is unchecked and at record levels. It has never been worse!” Trump wrote Monday on Truth Social, saying 41 people had been shot and two killed over the weekend. He called on Mayor Brandon Johnson and Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker, both Democrats, to request federal assistance and warned that the city would “die” without it.
Trump was referring to a violent weekend in Chicago in which at least 41 people were shot, three fatally, according to police. The victims included 15 people wounded in a mass shooting in Washington Park.
The weekend’s bloodshed underscored the continuing toll of gun violence in Chicago. But a single weekend does not establish whether violence is at record levels, and the broader trend presented by the city’s crime statistics is more complex.
The Chicago Police Department’s latest citywide report, which does not include the weekend cited by Trump, shows that some measures of violence have risen slightly from last year but most remain below the levels recorded in recent years.

US homeland security secretary Markwayne Mullin on Tuesday said that federal immigration and customs enforcement (ICE ) officers could be deployed to polling sites across the country.
Speaking to reporters in New York, Mullin said: “ICE isn’t there to patrol the polling places. We’re there to enforce specific threats.”
For months, Democrats and voting rights groups have warned that the Trump administration might attempt to deploy federal agents to polling locations in an effort to intimidate voters and depress turnout ahead of the November midterm elections.

A federal judge this week threw out the U.S. Justice Department’s lawsuit challenging California policies that allow transgender athletes to compete on school sports teams that match their gender identity.
The Justice Department alleged that the state’s Department of Education and the California Interscholastic Federation were in violation of Title IX, a 1972 federal law that prohibits sex-based discrimination in any education program or activity that receives federal funding. It argued the law requires that sports eligibility and facilities access be based on biological sex, not gender identity.
But U.S. District Judge Cynthia Valenzuela found that Title IX does no such thing — and that a recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling allowing other states to apply such eligibility standards only reinforced her conclusion.

The White House is renovating one of the most exclusive bowling alleys in America – a favorite rehab target for presidents of both parties that’s at least once blown up in the president’s face.
On July 28, the General Services Administration, under the auspices of the Executive Office of the President, awarded a nearly $253,000 contract for lighting work on the two-lane Harry S. Truman Bowling Alley, according to public contract awards reviewed by West Wing Playbook. And on Aug. 18, GSA awarded another contract to the same contractor, Charles Mann Enterprises, for $8,800 in escort services – essentially accompanying outside workers through secure areas – tied to the bowling alley project.
The White House and GSA did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

I am still inclined to respect Nate ’s numbers, which rank him about 11 points higher than that (for a net rating of -19.8) and come with a pretty graph.
Apparently his net did not go negative until early March of last year, close to a month behind when it did in '17. But, at least so far the trend does not look like it is leveling off yet – he has farther down to go.
