My question is why did they leave any of it here? I sure wouldn’t.
I think that once upon a time, gold was safer in North America. If, say, the Soviet Union launched a war of aggression against western Europe, they could scoop up countries’ gold if the gold was stored there. The U.S. dollar, which was backed by gold, is used as a common currency around the world. And New York is one of the top financial capitals of the world. Now, with the U.S. government taking partial possessions of companies (OK, investing in them in exchange for partial ownership – still smells like nationalisation to me), what’s to stop them from seizing all gold supplies in the country in the name of ‘national security’? Given that Trump is acting like an actual mobster, I wouldn’t put it past him.
It’s not exactly trivial to move any significant amount of gold around, for one.
But spreading it around, even leaving some in the US and Canada, is still a good idea, especially if there is any hope things will eventually turn around. There’s the psychological impact gold has on people, of course, but it’s not a tremendous amount of money in actual real terms, so the risk is further mitigated.
What did we (Canada) do? I guess it’s easier to invade us and steal Dutch gold….
If I was a country with gold to protect, I’d feel ok having it in Canada until I realised the idiotic and thuggish US was right next door making trouble all the time. I would not feel good about my gold in the us or anywhere near it. The way things are now is there really a good place to keep your gold? A decision I thankfully do not have to make. I’m neither a country nor do I have gold.
It’s not like a book or a wallet. Moving literally tons of anything in a secure and largely secret manner takes significant time and planning and is not itself a cheap process.
