Hold on there. The “photo” doesn’t make clear what kind of critter that steak was when it was ambulatory. It could be an otter chop. Or even a filet of Tibetan yak (which, as everyone knows, pairs exquisitely with sauerkraut).
How a yak in Tibet finds itself as roadkill, I don’t care to speculate.
It seems obvious that is what he is trying to do. I’m amazed at how resilient the economy has been despite him actively dismantling it. How long can it and the global economy hold out though?
He begins with the fundamental axiom that nothing he does is a bad idea or can turn out badly. There’s nothing to ‘realize’ about harm to the US because it categorically cannot happen within the warped reality in which he (barely) functions. The times things don’t work out (e.g. legal judgments) must therefore be the result of bad actors unfairly cheating him.
It doesn’t even enter his mind that he can possibly harm the US through his actions. If it happens, it’s somebody else’s fault. Back here in reality, it’s clear he is doing so, but it’s inadvertent. He’s simply trying to personally profit, and the harm to the country is a natural side effect
ETA: Of course, we are not so delusional but we do suffer from the delusion that people are fundamentally rational and connected to reality, hence the odd conclusion that he is actively trying to harm the country. That such totally irrational, delusional people not only exist but can achieve positions of incredible power is our blind spot
That just lends more credence to the incompent argument rather than the deliberate side. Ultimately I don’t think the why really matters. Either way he won’t see reason and we’ll have to deal with the fallout.
Perhaps? I suspect this is where the rest of the swamp comes in.
You can tell there are several people in the circle who know better but they have calculated it is better not to revolt, perhaps knowing there’s no actual scheme other than self enrichment and he can be steered away from his dumber ideas. I do wonder if there was actual malice aforethought, if some of that crew would have staged some type of internal WH coup, if only to save what’s left of the country for themselves later.
And that’s a galling thought. There are the idiots and true believers. But also the cynical ones grifting and biding their time in some vain hope they’ll get a bigger payday than the relatively petty grifts they’ve already got going. I suspect an outright traitor would have triggered some kind of intervention.
Oh, yeah. Trump’s circle is defintely made up of lickspittles, cowards, and grifters, with a few true believers scattered about. A lot of his inner circle are incompetent fools who never would have gotten far under another administration.
Trump will ask for volunteers to move up there and live out their days in his service. When they die they will simply be replaced by other devoted volunteers. The dead ones will be cremated and their ashes scattered in the Lincoln memorial reflecting pool.
But, hey, the kids get to stay in the country–maybe.
Who’s the US citizen who’s going to file on their behalf? Who’s going to pay the, last I heard, three grand and change for applying for a green card while in the US?
I wonder. Let’s hope they try to apply this retroactively. The felon’s essentially an employee of Putin. Doesn’t that mean his children should’ve gotten a green card, and not US citizenship?
I wonder: nominally 1 US$, but how much gold content? How much is that worth? Because on the linked website they only state: Composition: | 6% zinc, 3.5% manganese, 2% nickel, balance copper How much did they cost to mint, how much did they cost to purchase? How many were minted, how many are planned? Because again, according to the website:
250,000 Semiquincentennial President Donald J. Trump $1 Coins with a special-issue “July 4th” privy mark have been randomly included in the Rolls & Bags. These coins were struck on July 4th at the Philadelphia Mint.
Looks like a lot to include randomly mixed with the other coins, there must be much more of those. And for how much are they currently selling in the secondary market, aka eBay, with and without special-issue “July 4th” privy mark? I can picture people going through the bags and rolls they have bought looking for those marks, not knowing what those marks look like and where they are placed.
Good idea, now you mention it. First make the reflecting pool a salt water reflecting pool, then add sharks. That will stop the vandals from ripping & shredding the fire proof lining. Because it was fire proof, right?
I’m sure that Trump’s $1 coins will suffer the same fate as other American attempts to introduce a dollar coin: nobody will want them, as long as there are dollar bills.
If Trump really wanted to make these legal tender, used by millions of Americans every day, then he would recall all US$1 bills, leaving only his dollar coins in circulation. Of course, he doesn’t think that far ahead, and I’m sure that Americans will continue to use dollar bills.
Not being in the USA, I can deface them without penalty, should I run across one. I’m thinking it will make a nice target for rifle practice.
I don’t think Chieftain Ineptstein wants to make his coins the standard 1$ payment vehicle, he wants people to collect them and to worship his image on them. And to pay a premium for that, that’s why they cost more than one dollar each (see the link in Monty’s post that I quoted one step above).
It is normal that mints make a benefit minting coins and printing banknotes, that is called seignoirage (often they make a loss on the smallest denominations, like 1 c). But what has him over the moon is that they are selling his dollars for more than one dollar each (my question is: how much more?). The people love him so much that they pay a premium for him! He will soon ask for his share of the benefits, it is obviously his merit. Nobody will tell him that special coins in limited editions fetch a premium with collectors, but only if there are not too many. That is why I wonder how many will be minted. 250,000 on July 4th alone, randomly mixed with the other coins, looks like already too many for a collectible. A 25 coin roll is listed at the website as selling for 61$, but is currently unavailable. That sold for 2.44$ per dollar coin. Not a bad deal, that goes beyond seignoirage. But collectors don’t pay a premium for a common coin, particularly when:
While described as “gold coins,” the $1 tokens don’t contain any precious metals. Rather, the Treasury said they have a “gold-like finish.”
And of course, it could be argued that they are not really legal tender, or that they may not remain legal tender when the next administration is sworn in and they start putting the house in order. Because:
Neither the $1 gold coin nor the 24K gold commemorative coin received approval from the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee, a nonpartisan group created by Congress to advise the treasury on coin designs. That committee declined to review both coins, arguing that putting a sitting president on currency was against the country’s founding principles.
OK, the role of the Advisory Committee is just that: advisory. But should the next government decide to make those coins non legal tender out of spite for the face shown on them, this technicallity would be a nice argument in court to do so. Let them sue.
ETA: Stop calling them gold coins when they are not, it just strokes his ego. Brass tokens. Tinsel tokens. Lametta tokens.
I certainly won’t quibble over Trump being incompetent because clearly he is. But as far as hurting the United States, here’s the thing we must always keep in mind with respect to the basis for any decision that Trump makes:
His world (ewww…) is binary, ones and zeroes, and for him that translates into strictly win - lose. That’s the whole thing, that’s all there is.
And he must always be the winner. There can never be two winners. There can’t be two ones. If you are not the one then you are the zero. There is no in between.
If somebody else is happy, or doing well, or a country is thriving, or a business is succeeding, then they are winning, which means that he is losing. He must always be the winner and so he must make everybody else a loser. As president he has the power to do that. And he is doing it every single day. So it’s not so much primarily wanting to hurt the country or the citizens of that country, it’s basically if they are doing well and thriving then he is losing. The only way he can be sure that he is winning is if others are suffering, miserable, complaining, and therefore losing. Enjoying the spectacle of others suffering and living in fear is just a perk of the job.
You’ve got to admit this is on brand for Trump. Truly we are in another gilded age!
I don’t think this would be a wise idea as it sets a bad precedent. For U.S. currency to remain strong, something other countries might want to keep in reserve, then it’s got to be stable. Deciding to make what was legal tender not legal tender might make people doubt the stability of our currency. It’s just another arbitrary decision by the U.S. government demonstrating we can’t be trusted.
