According to a news story I read this morning, there was a SCOTUS ruling once upon a time that said that a promise made during an election campaign is not a bribe. No different than “vote for me and I’ll cut your taxes.”
One could reasonably ask “you control the White House and both houses of Congress. Why not just give the money away now?” The answer, of course, is that then there would be no incentive to vote Republican. Of course, another term for “incentive to vote a particular way” is “bribe”.

We would save a lot of money if, instead of giving $5K to every adult, we only give it to voters who can show a ballot that they marked for Republican candidates. That would cut the cost by, oh, $500,000,000,000 or so. Of course that would be blatantly illegal but the SCOTUS has said Donald doesn’t have to worry about that in the course of his official actions.

Well duh. Of course it’s against the law. That’s just another day in the life of trump.
Yeah, calling it a “dividend” is basically admitting that he could give that to everyone now. But he’s not going do it unless he gets his way. Stupid Americans won’t make that connection.
So what will come next? A threat that if Republicans don’t win, he will put a 50% income tax on everyone making less than $250,000?

I again clicked on C-SPAN for night #2 . After a tribute to Charlie Kirk I skipped ahead and saw someone defending Trumps $5000 dividend by comparing it to Biden giving billions in free healthcare to illegal immigrants.
I think it’s very safe to just say, “he’s not going to do it.”

Melania Trump has come to the defence of her husband’s close aide Natalie Harp amid rumours that Ms Harp has an unhealthy obsession with the US president.
Media speculation about the 35-year-old aide was prompted after Jon Ossoff, the Democratic senator for Georgia suggested Mr Trump “doesn’t want to do the job. He wants to build his ballroom and travel with Natalie”.
The aide’s close relationship with Mr Trump and her unfettered access are thought to have caused concern amongst his staff.

Ms Harp is reported to have slept in a changing room to be close to the US president and travelled in the boot of his car when there were no seats.
A series of intimate letters Ms Harp apparently sent to Mr Trump also resurfaced, in which she reportedly wrote “You are all that matters to me” and labelled herself “unworthy” of him.

The Trump administration on Wednesday blasted the University of California, Berkeley, School of Law for allegedly favoring Black applicants while discriminating against Asian and White students, marking its latest federal action targeting race-conscious admissions policies at universities.
The Department of Justice (DOJ), along with the Department of Education, found Berkeley Law in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits racial discrimination in programs and activities receiving federal funds.
“The data produced by Berkeley Law demonstrates a strong bias against Asian and White applicants, with a corresponding bias in favor of Black applicants,” the DOJ said.
The findings came after officials launched a compliance review of Berkeley Law in March 2025, roughly two years after the Supreme Court struck a major blow to affirmative action programs many universities used in admissions for decades. California had already banned affirmative action in public education under Proposition 209, enacted in 1996.
According to the DOJ’s analysis, Black applicants in 2025 had “5.8 times higher odds of admission than comparable white applicants.”

A longtime biographer of Donald Trump says insiders are leaking details on Pete Hegseth’s “weird conduct” because everyone besides the president wants him out.
Michael Wolff writes on his Substack, HOWL , that Hegseth’s leak problem stems from his unpopularity in the Pentagon and White House.
“Daily leaks about his blunders, stupidity, malfeasance, and weird conduct—his wife has moved into the Pentagon as his effective second-in-command—have become part of a growing rear-guard rebellion to get him out,” Wolff writes.
The biographer further alleges that the campaign to oust Hegseth has reached the West Wing.
“In the White House, the president’s closest circle of advisors believe Hegseth needs to be fired—yesterday is their timetable,” Wolff writes. “Everyone is alarmed—truly, freaked out. He has no supporters left anywhere.”
However, he writes that there is a single, all-important outlier: “Except for Donald Trump.”
Deputy Pentagon Press Secretary Joel Valdez told the Daily Beast, “Michael Wolff is a known liar who writes resistance fanfiction for low IQ left-wing hacks, similar to those who write for the Daily Beast.” Valdez, 27, spent a year at college and has never worked outside Republican politics. He became deputy press secretary to Pete Hegseth—where he demanded journalists be “punished” for reporting true stories—after working for extreme MAGA reps Matt Gaetz and Lauren Boebert.
Hegseth’s derogatory nicknames are proof of his incompetence, Wolff suggested. Wolff previously revealed that Hegseth’s former Fox News boss, Roger Ailes, referred to him as “Colonel Vodka” because he talked so often about his National Guard service and was known to drink.

Not a single federal judge has granted Donald Trump’s administration access to voter files in any of the 30 states where the Department of Justice is fighting a legal battle for sensitive data for millions of Americans.
After 23 straight losses in court , the Justice Department is now sending threatening letters to election officials, warning states that they are “currently under investigation” and subject to “ongoing litigation” for access to records related to the 2024 election.
That was news to Utah’s Republican Lt. Governor Deidre Henderson.
“Um, no, I was not aware, but I guess I am now,” she wrote on social media Wednesday, along with a copy of a letter from the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division. “It would be nice if the good folks at the DOJ would focus on actual problems instead of baselessly harassing election officials.”
Nevada’s Secretary of State Cisco Aguilar received a similar letter, which was in reference to the “Maintenance of All Election Records in Your Possession as Chief Election Officer During Pending Litigation.” He called the letter a “pretty direct threat.”
“They’re just using this as an opportunity to intimidate us, and I’m not going to fold in any way,” he told The Nevada Independent.
Similar letters were sent to more than two dozen other state election officials as the Trump administration wages a government-wide effort to assume federal control of the nation’s elections and restrict ballot access for tens of thousands of voters.
It’s unclear what, exactly, the Justice Department is investigating.

The relationship between Donald Trump and King Charles has always been painted as cordial. The two have said good things about each other and spent time together as Trump visited the UK and vice versa. But does their good diplomatic relationship mean they actually get along? Or are they just putting on a good face in public?
If people are wondering it’s because Trump shared a misleading video on social media, one which appeared to show King Charles shrugging and walking away from a man who fainted during a royal visit.
The footage is part of an edited video whose whole purpose is to show other world leaders being disrespectful and Trump honoring fallen US troops, hugging veterans and shaking hands with police officers. The full footage of the video, which was from July 2020, showed Charles, who was then the Prince of Wales , reaching out to the man he fell before remaining close as he received medical attention.
Buckingham Palace indicated they would not comment on the matter.
Captions that read “the side of Trump the media doesn’t show you” and “the people’s president” appear at different moments, with the song A Thousand Years by Christina Perri playing throughout.

Joe diGenova, the prosecutor who was tapped by Attorney General Todd Blanche to supervise the “grand conspiracy” investigation targeting Obama- and Biden-era officials, abruptly resigned on Thursday.
In a brief call with CBS News, diGenova said he had turned in his resignation letter to Blanche at 3 p.m. on Thursday.
“It was an honor and a privilege to serve the president and the department,” he said. He added that his wife, attorney Victoria Toensing, who also worked with the team of federal prosecutors in Fort Pierce, Florida, will be leaving the Justice Department on Friday.
diGenova declined to comment on the reasons for his sudden departure, which was first reported by ABC News . CBS News has reached out to the Justice Department for comment.
His exit comes just days after lawyers representing some of the witnesses in the investigation received emails alerting them that their clients would be receiving grand jury subpoenas, sources familiar with the matter told CBS News.
Recently, diGenova’s investigators also reached out to lawyers who represent former FBI agents who investigated President Trump for his retention of classified records to request voluntary interviews, two other sources briefed on the matter said.
diGenova was tapped earlier this year to oversee a sprawling “grand conspiracy” probe being run out of Fort Pierce, Florida, that is examining whether Obama- and Biden-era officials were part of a long-running conspiracy to keep Mr. Trump out of political office.
He was also overseeing a criminal probe into whether Obama-era CIA Director John Brennan lied to Congress in 2023 about the U.S. intelligence community’s assessment on Russian interference in the 2016 election.

Yes, because he is doing EXACTLY what Trump intended - distracting everyone from the crimes in the Oval Office. Trump doesn’t actually care about the military; he doesn’t care that he has shit advisors and strategists for his war in Iran - I think he prefers it to drag on, again as a distraction from the grift and the bribery he is committing.

I don’t think it’s going exactly as intended. Trump wanted a distraction, sure, but he was hoping it would come in the form of a quick, easy victory. You’re certainly right Trump doesn’t give a damn about the military, he thinks they’re losers and suckers after all, but he does care about the military in how it reflects on his own self-image. The quagmire in Iran makes Trump look weak and that’s not what he intended at all.
Yeah, the Iran situation was a conflict between two of his well known competing lizard brain urges.
He doesn’t like the idea of actually sending troops into things, remembering all the quagmires of years past and also having the bully’s preference for bluster over action.
But at the same time, somebody told him there was something he could do that was sure to succeed and would be over in a matter of days, no matter what the “so-called experts” said about it. He loves too good to be true solutions (and is too dumb to realize they’re too good to be true), no matter how many times they blow up in his face.
