The Walking Dead; 2.09 "Triggerfinger" (open spoilers)

Where would they get the materials even for a basic fence? Are we assuming hardware stores are still stocked with supplies?

Even if not, you could strip barbed wire from neighboring farms.

I really hate how nerdy this makes me look, but I transferred these to computer and can skim through them very quickly to find this stuff.

This is episode 204-205, day 9-10, and it does seem like that on first viewing.

204 starts the day after Carl is shot, Rick and Lori were at his bedside all night. Dale and the RV arrive in the morning. They have the Otis memorial, then gather around to discuss the search. People are setting up tents in the background. Hershel asks how long Sophia has been missing, Rick says “This’ll be day three” (confirming all of the season two timeline so far). Maggie gives them a county survey map and Rick says they’ll assign grids, but Hershel says he gave too much blood to be doing anything physical, so Daryl goes alone and finds the farmhouse. Glenn has sex with Maggie. That night, Rick takes off his police uniform and puts it in a dresser and shares an emotional moment with Lori. It certainly looks like they are going to sleep in the house, but she then says “You stay with him [Carl] a while, I’ll wait up” and goes outside, pauses at a big square two-toned tent, then goes out in a field and takes the pregnancy test.

In 205 she wakes up in a big square two-toned tent and says “I can’t believe I slept in” when she goes outside and bumps into Sophia’s mom. Rick does mention new search grids to the group shortly after that.

There could be missing time here, but I assume Lori slept late and is acting funny because she just found out she was pregnant the night before and stayed up late thinking about it. Also, Glenn and Maggie bump into each other and act strange and flirty, indicating it’s their first meeting since their trip to town. And the “new search grids” are in response to the farmhouse Daryl found, which the keep talking about (Shane disagrees that it’s a lead, the others seem hopeful). So, I think this is day 10. If any more time had elapsed, that means Daryl found the farmhouse but they didn’t discuss it or adjust their search for some time.

Considering how few people are (probably) left alive, and how little time passed since the initial outbreak (a month or so?), it wouldn’t surprise me if the only real shortages are weapons, food, medical supplies, and gasoline.

Yes. Even assuming there was a shopping spree on wood, stores have plenty of prefab fencing. Plus, you know, the huge forest full of wood. Fencing is a fairly ancient art, and battlefield obstructions far from supply lines are old hat.

The best place to get supplies for a basic fence would probably be the previously existing fence that already runs around the property.

The forest has an abundance of wood, sure, but do they have the equipment, let alone the knowledge, of how to properly fell a tree, and then mill it into usable lumber?

And, just based on what we have seen of the town they are in, it doesn’t look like there is a Lowe’s or Home Depot around; it looks a very small town with only “mom and pop” type stores.

Something tells me the local “Joe’s Hardware” isn’t going to have enough prefab fencing to cover the entire perimeter of the farm.

The farm is already fenced in.

I think another germane point might be that Herschel and Co. were living deeply in denial up to this point - I have no problem with them having a regular farm fence around the property, and not having beefed it up yet.

The bad thing about putting up a big elaborate fence is that it would be like a billboard to roving bands of marauders.

Unlike all the lights in the windows at night. Or the plume from burning bodies. Or the sound of gun fire against a barn full of zombies.

This show picks and chooses what bits of common sense it uses so I wouldn’t worry too much about a good or bad outcome about things.

Homesteads don’t mill trees silly. Obviously the fences aren’t as pretty. Hell even just felling trees strategically around the property would make a fairly effective barrier.

Did we learn nothing from The Road Warrior?? You know there’s a Lord Humongous out there somewhere in zombified-America, just looking for a nice farm house to take over.

Is it too late for them to go back to Atlanta and move in with that gang they found in Episode 4? Those guys seemed to know what they were doing.

I agree. For me, the part that floored me was when they had that elaborate dinner. Totally a waste of food. And the lights on all the time. Don’t generators make noise? That’s what they’re using right? Turn that crap off. And keep it off unless absolutely necessary. I can walk around in my house in the dark just fine. The tent crew can find another farmhouse (like the one Daryl found) and go back to Herschel when that baby needs to come out. That’s why they’re staying and it’s stupid.

That would be a real improvement. Less stupid conflict inside the group. Zombies are okay, but actual marauders would be good.

I think you guys are missing a big plot point, here. Rick has arrested a lot of people and shot a lot of walkers, but he’s never shot a real, live person (as far as we know). This is the first time he’s ever had to kill an actual human being. Rick shoots walkers and saves people. That’s who he is.

But not anymore. So he feels guilty about it. That’s why he didn’t make up some story about walkers eating the two Others. He had to confess what he’d done, and when he’s talking about how he had to do it, he’s really only talking to himself. So when he sees the boy on the fence, he resolves that he’s not going to let another one of the Others die while he can still help it. That’s why he has to bring him back to the farm when even Herschel knows they shoulda shot him.

Screw a fence/wall. Dig a ditch three feet wide and six feet deep. Take the dirt and put it on the inside of the ditch. They live on a farm, so surely there’s a tractor or something that can till the soil and make everyone’s job easier. By the end, you’ll have a dirt berm 12 feet tall that a walker would have to cross to get to your farm.

There was that big shoot out in the first episode. You know, the one where after he thought he’d shot the bad guys he got lazy and wound up getting shot himself.
I have to say, I LOVED that windshield zombie. Tearing off his own face, but oblivious to that, just to get at some of that sweet, sweet flesh. Great stuff.

I didn’t notice the day/night thing, but it doesn’t bug me anyway. It was light out, then it got dark out. It happens. Every single day it happens. Now, if there was a scene where it was dark, then suddenly it was light, then it was dark again, that’s where I’d have a problem.
A previous thread had people mentioning the jaywalker zombie that Lori hit looking like Glen, and apparently there’s a good reason for that. The guy that played that zombie was the same guy that plays Glen’s stunt double. I’m so glad that Talking Dead exists so we can learn little things like this, lol

But that’s basically what happened. It appeared that only a few minutes had passed between episodes, yet it went from broad daylight to the dead of night. Then after the shootout, they make it back to the farm in broad daylight.
