The Walking Dead; 7.03 "The Cell" (open spoilers)

A new group of survivors seem to have it all in their impressive community; however, there is a price

Scott Aukerman and a surprise cast member are on Talking Dead. Also apparently there’s a new web series for FTWD.

So naked Daryl; already loving this episode.

Life under Negan is unsurprisingly pretty grim.

Well this is going to be stuck in my head for a week. Thanks Negan.

Three questions:

  1. What happened to Dwight’s sister? My recollection of that earlier episode where Daryl first ran into Dwight is a bit hazy.

  2. The guy that Dwight shot – had we seen him before this episode?

  3. What was on the polaroid that Dwight gave to Daryl? Glenn’s body?

1 - Killed by a walker due to her extreme stupidity (i.e. going to a walker encased in glass)

2 - Don’t think so.

3 - Yes, a shot of Glenn’s body

What kind of a monster would make sure that survived an apocalypse? No one could have had the foresight to think that it may be useful in, uh, enhanced interrogation technique situations.

  1. I never wanted to push someone into a hot shower as much as I have wanted to push Darryl into a hot shower. OMG, it is getting ridiculous how filthy he’s getting? Enough!

  2. I want to track down Collapsable Hearts Club and their Easy Street song and personally bash each and every one of their heads in a la Negan. This is now in my top three most loathed songs EVER in the history of my world. Vomitous!

I hope the whole Negan arc gets better because I’m just not digging it. His character is more annoying than menacing. The whole “Lucille” thing is eye-rolly, and this episode seemed more like filler than anything else.

Pretty dull episode over all, but…

…it sets up Dwight’s eventual turn to a good guy.

Negan’s superhuman ability to track people down is starting to wear thin as well. It highlights one major flaw in the show in that no matter how far people travel, by whatever means, they can’t seem to leave the Atlanta area.

In 2-3 hours by car, you can be out of the state GA from anywhere in the state. It’s not that big of an area IRL. In 13 hours you can be in NYC. Yes, your travels might be delayed by abandoned cars and zombies, but for the most part we just see people cruising along for hours.

Although, interestingly enough, they seem to be able to walk home in the same amount of time when their vehicles break down.

Even if you are some powerful local warlord, I can’t imagine that it’s that easy to track someone down in the entire state. What is there only one road that everyone uses? What if that guy Dwight was chasing down decided to take I-95 instead of whatever backroad he happened to guess right on?

They left Georgia seasons ago; right now they’re in Northern Virginia.

I’m trying to figure out why TWD thought feeding Darryl a dog food sandwich is some kind of torture. Was it season 2 that Carl was quite happy to find a can to eat despite Rick saying they were better than that and taking it away? Then they ate an owl instead.

I thought the whole 5 minute making a sandwich was going to lead up to making Darryl eat a shit sandwich.

It wasn’t really torture, they had to feed him something so he got the worst thing they had.

Is “A” where you start as a captive and if you work your way to “F” you end up in the Walker Cage?

It would have been awesome if they had been serving him Dinki-Di.

I actually though this was one of the better episodes, in that, unlike the season opener, the torture porn was in the service of some larger point. Also, it was at least mildly interesting to see Dwight having second thoughts about himself. There are still fundamental structural problems, however. Just for one thing, Negan is such an unrelenting asshole that he almost certainly would have been offed by his own people long ago. I’m sorry, you can twirl all the barbed-wire-wrapped baseball bats you like, but a scoped deer rifle at a couple hundred yards wins every time.

The guy Dright chased down even alluded to this problem, with his line about how “there’s only one of him, and so many of us”.

In the context of the show, that was a brilliant bit of business. Five seconds in and I was already begging for Lucille to put me out of my misery.

I have made “Easy Street”, my new alarm.

Another good episode with good world building. Seeing how the Saviors work from the inside is interesting.

I liked the juxtaposition in the beginning of them showing how they shook down all the different communities for the ingredients of the sandwich. That’s good story telling. It’s unbelievable how my outlook on the season has changed since the premiere. Looking forward to seeing where this goes (and that is even while having a good idea what it will be since I read the comics).

ETA: Call me insane but I actually liked that song and was sad to see it go. Damn it was catchy.

After Negan was fucking around with Dwight telling him he could have a night with Sheri for old times sake he tells him that he is just kidding and that he can have anyone he wants, as long as they say yes. Am I crazy or does that imply he needs permission before he can have perfectly consensual sex with a random woman?

I don’t think it’s a spoiler, but from what I read about Negan’s background in the comic, rape and sexual assault is a big “no no”.
