The Walking Dead; 8.01 "Mercy" (open spoilers)

Yeah, that was very irritating. Waste time talking to Negan, then waste bullets shootin’ at his damm windows!

Sometime it’s important to remember that this is still a Comic Book.

No its not. The comic book is much better written.

At least Rick didn’t waste time counting down any further than 7.
I don’t really fault the shooting at the windows. It’s a big factory building. I would expect that there would be Saviors up in the catwalks ready to shoot back at Rick & friends. Or at the very least, prevent the Saviors from using the windows as concealment and pinning them down so they can’t shoot the walker herd.

It just doesn’t make sense in the context of their larger plan. I kind of think we’re past warnings and dialogue at this point. I’d have just sent in the army of walkers, then pick off wherever I saw Saviors shooting. Maybe throw some Molotov’s at the buildings to force the Saviors out into the zombie horde. Then, maybe I’d talk to Negan.

I’m surprised how many things they use and destroy that can’t be made again in their lifetimes. Scavenging is becoming difficult, and rather than shoot folks to encourage the others, Negan should be looking into agriculture, as how the Kingdom grows food.

Yep, this was pretty much my response to this episode. The writers just seem to be phoning it in now.

Oh, they something “really cool” planned that require Negan living for a while.

If Spock phasered the bad alien as soon as he showed up, Star Trek episodes would have been five minutes long.

Why was writer/producer Scott Gimple shaking when he spoke about season eight?

If you have a cool plot that requires Negan to stay alive, then it’s on you to keep him alive through good plotting or characterization, not through plot armor and idiocy.

Negan didn’t have to wander out onto that balcony. They could have written the scene such that he wasn’t a sitting duck during a 10 minute conversation. But that might take, you know, work. Or talent. Or both.

An excellent point, but obviously not taken by the writers or producers.

Yes. There’s no way to defend this; it’s just plain old bad writing. Those who are trying to defend the ‘didn’t take out Negan though there was plenty of opportunity’ with ‘they want to recruit Negan [and/or recruit his followers]’, surely can NOT defend the sudden dominance Rick’s side had over the entire countryside. The idea that Negan now has just a handful of sentries—all taken out by Major Characters, which also makes no sense in terms of time—and that there’s no system for Negan’s sentries to report in, such as we saw during Season 6, so that Negan had no idea the absurdly-“armored” convoy was approaching …well, it’s just annoyingly stupid writing.

I mean, I’m glad that so many people are making a nice living off this, and glad that so many viewers are still enjoying it. But it’s disappointing to see so little effort made to come up with coherent, satisfying teleplays.

Did anyone watch Talking Dead? I often enjoy that show, but I couldn’t get through more than 10 minutes of that wank-fest before I just deleted it from my DVR. Ugh. Worse than The Oscars Ceremony!

Also, I’m a little confused on the timeline of Maggie’s pregnancy. Has so little time passed that she’s not even showing yet?

For those of you who have read the comics, how does this compare to the comic? Are the TV writers simply stringing this out to last the whole season?

Obviously Negan isn’t afraid of anyone, probably had snipers planted. And he doesn’t have to grow food or scavenge anything, he makes everyone else do it for him, with fear and intimidation. At this moment he owns this world, but Officer Rick is gonna show him a thing or three! I have high hopes for this season, The Rickanator is back, folks!

And this is precisely the problem with the show.

He’s back, until it’s convenient to have him turn into a blithering idiot or a sobbing wreck all over again. And when you add that to the sorts of plot-convenient inconsistencies and idiocies mentioned by Sam Stone, regarding issues like shooting ability and strategy, it’s clear that the writers have basically no respect for the intelligence of their audience.

Or maybe they do.

Elaborate, Sir!

Was Rick that much of a wimp in the comic?

I guess I should spend a couple of hundred bucks on Ebay and find out.

Rick is bad-ass, no body would not cry over the horrible deaths of family/friends and then almost be forced to cut off your sons arm. But do remember this is fiction and it is okay to like or dislike it , whatever it is your choice. I know alot of women like the character Daryl, I don’t care for him. Sometimes it seems as though there is gratuitous Daryl poses and bravado because female viewers demand it, I find that kind of cheapens the show. Now everyone likes Negan, and those self-same producers will do anything to keep him in the show. I still like the show and story arc should be great this season, we shall see.

From my memory, it went on for longer than the Governor storyline, but it did figure more of a focus (no season split up and wandering about, ending in up Sanctuary) in the storyline. I would say I would expect it to be resolved by the end of this season. But the TV show spacefills like crazy so I would really not be surprised if they took it to three seasons.

Okay, it’s been a couple days digesting the premier and I just don’t get it. What was the plan again? Did they complete the plan in this episode? Or was this just step one of the plan? Seems an awful lot of work for little return. Between seasons Rick and crew obviously got organized, the scouted and located all of the Savior’s look-out posts, etc. The got a bunch of vehicles running and up-armored them with corrugated tin. rolls eyes They made a plan involving coordination of multiple actions - taking out look-outs to allow for the advance of their convoy and separately Darryl and team coordinated the arrival of a zombie hoard to Sanctuary.

Then… what? Rick and team are back in a field after the fact and… what? Do they think they’ve won? Did the plan not include monitoring the zombie horde attack and elimination of any survivors? Was it just a ton of work to show up and then have every single person leave because they assume the zombie hoard will win the day? I just don’t get it. Did Gabriel going into the RV now mis-direct all the zombies from entering Sanctuary to now surrounding the RV so the plan has failed? But since Rick left no one in any position to monitor the situation they don’t know that, right? Seriously… this is like the writers said “We’re gonna show Rick and team are really organized and bringing the shit in this war now!” and then they went on a bender and left everything completely sloppy by the end of the episode.
