We have rain here in the Bay Area. I shall venture out shortly to watch the natives spinning out and driving like nits.
We went to Marie Callendars for Pecan Pie yesterday and they were actually closing up early. They were sold out of everything. we did make two pies for T-day, but my hubby wanted his fix. Oh well.
I have a solution for the cat alarm clock - feed the cats at night only. I’ve got 3 of the adorable little howlers myself. If you only feed them at night, they won’t wake you up early asking for their breakfast. Now if this only worked for other animals, say children.
My wonderful week is almost over, but I got the housework done. We emptied the garage, so we can park a car in it, and I 've cleaned up from that. The house cleaners came even! Grocery shopping today, and birthday tomorrow (I want a fish tank AKA cat entertainment center). Best week ever!
Bobbio best wishes! I hope this turns out to be something they can repair, after all this.
Good thoughts and prayers for anyone who needs them. Glad to hear your tooth problem is fixed, or at least no longer as painful, Rockin’.
Got a cooking/recipe question and feel like I’d get a better response from the many Mumper bakers than in Cafe Society, where many of my posts just languish. LOL Anyways … I’ve been wondering this for some time now: my daughter is allergic to most nuts, and I saw a recipe for an apple cake that is apples and walnuts - well, those are the main ingredients. Is there anything I can substitute for the walnuts, like raisins for example? This cake also has a caramel sauce that gets drizzled overtop before serving. The apples go in fresh, cut up, btw, so you need a firm apple for the cake. LOL You would think that I had enough to eat, especially sweet food, but I was drooling for this cake this morning, watching the show! My pumpkin pie turned out nicely, btw, even though I didn’t find the molasses that I wanted to add to the recipe. LOL Will have to do that next time, I guess! Thanks for any help, in advance.
Yesterday felt like Sunday to me as well, although hey, that happens to me more often than I care to admit … Hope everyone enjoys the rest of the weekend.
What about something like chunks of toffee? It’d have the crunch of nuts without the allergens. Other than that, I got nothing.
**FCD **earned some major karma points today. As he headed to the hardware store for some bolts, he passed an elderly lady walking on the side of the road, stopping every few steps to lean against the guard rail and rest. Apparently her granddaughter had dumped her on the road an took off (so she said) and her home was almost 30 miles away! When **FCD **saw her, he stopped and asked if he could help, then he drove her home. I’m not going to try to relate the tale he shared, but it sounded like something out of a bad soap opera. Anyway, he got the 81-y/o lady home before she froze (it’s just mid-40s here, and dropping.) He called me from way far away telling me he’d be later than he thought on his errand. He just got back a few minutes ago. He’s such a good guy.
I’ve got some beef stew started. I found some chuck in the freezer, and I cut it into chunks, floured it, browned it with onions, then dumped broth, 'maters, burgundy, and Worcestershire into the pot. It’s simmering for the moment. In about an hour, I’ll add N.O.T. chunks and mixed veggies, then simmer some more. I have some cabbage that’ll go into the mix also. Yummy!
Done so far:
-Paid rent plus two or three other bills - there went most of that paycheck, but at least the hungriest sharks have been appeased
-Repotted a mini rose and got rid of now-frozen plant detritus from my balcony pots, am now hoping the wind will sweep up the spilled soil and other loose stuff for me
-Rearranged indoor plants (half of which belong to the mom of New Guy a.k.a. Most Recent Ex, now that I think about it :dubious:) for better wintertime lighting, added slow release fertilizer as appropriate, and even dusted off some leaves
Went ahead and dusted some other furniture while I was at it
Took out the trash and checked the mailbox - don’t laugh, it’s fifteen minutes total to do just that, in walking out to the mail area and back plus hitting the dumpster on the way
That’s insane-o-pants productive for me. Spoiler alert: I had to quit drinking and for boring reasons I’ll skip (not having to do w/not being able to pay a bill, for once) I don’t have TV on my actual TV, just my little tablet, and put the two together and it turns out not sitting around drinking on the couch in front of the television frees up a lot of productivity time on days off.
Well, that, and the whole no-boyfriend thing.
Still to do:
Finish these two pairs of earrings. Might sell one pair but the other will definitely be for me, if I can just get the damn thing to look right.
Walk up to the grocery store for a couple bucks’ worth of the most crucial stuff plus the last of my paycheck in cash to pay back about half of what I owe the aforementioned guardian angel who enabled me to keep my lights and heat on a few weeks ago.
herbs, I would go with the oatmeal or toffee in the cake. Dried fruit tends to have a different fruit to liquid ratio than N.O. nuts.
Mooom, FCD definitely got some karma points for his kindness today. From what you mentioned, I have to wonder if LOL may be having some confusion issues. Here’s hoping that adult protection services becomes involved in either case.
Grocery shopping is done and I think I’ll try the Chinese chicken pie tonight, but with turkey. I’ll let you know how it turns out.
Oh, also gotta remember to clean all the wood furniture since I have the oily lemony cleaner stuff for it now (and Jeebus there is dust everywhere, no wonder my nose has been stuffy) and … Ah, crap, I figured I needed to write it down here so I’d remember.
Ok, the other thing I need to do is upgrade my short term memory.
OH! Unload and reload and run the dishwasher. Dmmit, that was it. I’ve been living out of it for a couple of days instead of actually putting them away (am I the only one who does this?) and the new dirties are starting to stack up.
**Red **- From the conversation he recounted, she was perfectly lucid. His parents are in their 80s, so he’s familiar with the demographic, plus he’s pretty good at reading people and he didn’t get the impression she had problems, other than a bitch for a granddaughter. In any event, he got her home, so she should be OK. Granddaughter deserves a butt boil, tho.
The soup is smelling yum. I’ve added all the veggies - now it just needs to simmer another hour. Wish I’d made a loaf of bread. Oh well, we have crackers.
I often add 'taters to beef stew – makes it a bit thicker. My version is similar to what Moooom posted but I often forget the flouring step. Maybe that’s why mine needs thickener.
Walking to and from the grocery store plus one quick loop inside to get onions and things nets me 4,000 steps according to my new pedometer app that I finally remembered to actually turn on. Buns (and calves) of steel, here I come! I’ve been walking that route for a while, not sure why it feels “official” as far as muscle tone goes now that I can quantify it. Well, as much as I can quantify according to a free app I don’t quite trust for accuracy yet.
Hmmm, the beta bowl needs cleanin’ and I think I might loop that in with the need-to-run-the-dishwasher errand. Somebody is supposed to come by for the boxes of aluminum cans I have for recycling: a buck or three for them, and I get to feel a tiny bit less-bad that the apt. complex doesn’t have recycling, so I figured good karma points all around … If he shows up. Damn Craig’s List flakes.
shoe, I don’t havea dishwasher, but I generally use dishes from the drainer until I empty it in preparationfor the next sink of dishes.
Mooom, I agree with you about the butt boil thingy.
I made the Chinese turkey pie. First, I lightly stir fried the bean sprouts, some red bell pepper, shiitake mushrooms, water chestnuts and green peas with the turkey and made a garlicky moo goo gai pan sauce. I then lined some jumbo muffin tins with wonton wrappers brushed with sesame oil and par baked them for a couple of minutes. I filled them with the veggies and topped with another wonton wrapper, again brushed with sesame oil then sprinkled with sesame seeds and stuck back in the oven long enough to crisp everything up.
I’m eating one now and with a little tweaking, this one will be a keeper. Thanks for the idea swampy and doggio!
I forgot my towels at the laundromat. :smack: When I realized that I ran (okay, drove) back over and fortunately they were still in the dryer. There’s something to be said for laundering on a Saturday night. Plus this gave me the opportunity to go out and get the frozen veggies I forgot yesterday. :smack:
Craig’s List guy flaked on picking up my cans. I came down with a case of the fuckits after getting so much done earlier and have ignored the jewelry crafting and dishes and betta bowl. Hungry, but don’t know what I want. Had some sardines and capers on crackers earlier which was tasty but not so filling. Brushed Nikki (SmallDumbCat) and trimmed out a few tiny mats in her fur but didn’t get around to brushing her teeth or trimming her claws.
My mom gave me some tangerines, which I do not like. Am considering making candied citrus with them tomorrow. Might get ambitious enough to melt some chocolate to dip them into … Might not …
ETA that sounds really tasty, missred. What tweaks did you have in mind?
Settled for making a quesadilla with diced onion, cilantro, and provolone for that autentico flavor, with one of those snack-pack things of guacamole - the spicy version, since it’s Saturday night and all. Gonna veg out with Plants vs. Zombies. Exciting times.
I hope that didn’t sound pathetic or anything. Things have been far too hectic, stressful, drama-laden, or just plain unpleasant lately. Zoning out with some mindless entertainment in just my own quiet introverted company is blissful right now, especially when seasoned with the smugness of having gotten some shit done, too.
Smug and lazy. That’s me right now. Plus I have onion breath.
