Hi everyone, first time poster, longtime reader. I am, well, let’s face it, a trivia nut, probably largely of my hometown and its big claim to fame. Namely, Stevens Point, WI, and the world’s largest trivia contest.
For those of you who have never heard of it (and I’m guessing that’s not many of you) the local university’s radio station has a weekend every April where, starting from 6 pm Friday to midnight Sunday, they put on this contest. Generally it’s 8 questions per hour, based on TV, movies, sports, music, you name it, where teams (over 400 of them) have to call in with the answer and get points. Throw in a couple of challenges where you have to run around town like something out of Amazing Race, thousands of people who treat the weekend like a huge party, and some pretty colorful moments. I really can’t describe it. It’s like Jeopardy meets a scavenger hunt meets a cult movie marathon meets Mardi Gras.
So this year’s contest is coming up, about a week and a half, and I got to thinking, have any fellow Dopers (Yay! I finally get to use that phrase!) heard of or played in this contest in the past? This seems like the kind of thing that might be right up your alley for some of you.
I went to Point from 1980 to 1985. Played trivia every year. Loved it. The last few years, I have tried to follow it a bit on the WWSP internet feed. Still love the music. Every once in awhile, I can answer a question correctly.
