Things you have more than one of, just because you like them

… Even though you probably only need the one.

For me it’s sunglasses. My wife would say I have an obsession. I have sunglasses out the wazoo but sometimes when I see a cool pair, I just have to have them.

Pocket knives are another thing. I don’t buy them as much anymore but I have a few. I like their lines if designed well. How can you not like a beautiful blade?

And backpacks. Back when I could, I used to backpack and had a different pack for every situation. Now I just use the daypacks. But it seems every vacation I justify buying a new one even though a have a good selection waiting in my closet.

Oh criminy, let me think.
Oh,
Chop sticks
Bags
Crocs
Socks
Dog collars
Key rings
Scissors

On and on and on…

We have WAY more Trader Joes bags than we need.

Watches. I have about a dozen, and most are solar. Most of those are atomic as well, so I neither have to reset them or replace batteries. I don’t need that many, but I like them. There’s nothing particularly special about any one of them, nor are any of them valuable.

Pocket knives. I have no idea how many I have. I don’t know where all of them are. I do know they’re not all in one place, though, because every now and then I find one someplace that makes little sense. I have one I carry almost every day, and I have a butterfly knife because I think it looks cool to handle it. A few are Swiss Army, I have at least two Bucks (different models), and a bunch of others of varying quality.

Sunglasses. I keep at least one pair in each car. I have two pairs in my ski locker. I have a pair sitting on a plant stand by the back door to wear when I go into the back yard. I have about three or four ‘spare’ pairs in a box. I bought four pairs instead of three not to long ago because the order total came with free shipping. Some of those spares are for my wife, who is really hard on sunglasses so I have some extra to give her when she breaks/loses a pair.

Bicycles. I think I’m done buying bikes, but at the moment I have two road bikes, a mountain bike, a fixie, and (half of a) tandem that are mine in the garage. There are also at least two bikes belonging to each of our kids (two kids) who moved out over a decade ago, and my wife has a few (three?) of her own. I’m not interested in different flavors of mountain bikes or a gravel bike, though.

Judo uniforms. I have five that still fit (three in my regular rotation), plus over a dozen that I’ve outgrown or are worn out that have sentimental attachments to them. At my age, they don’t wear out too quickly anymore, but I will probably buy one more special one if I ever get that next promotion. Oh, and I have one that belonged to my late brother that I keep in his memory.

Porsches. Got three, need to get rid of one. Probably should get rid of two, but it’s tough to let go!

Oh, sure, who doesn’t have too many Porsches? :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Band merch t-shirts. It’s gotten kind of ridiculous; some I’ve never even worn. These are very niche garage/surf/punk/roots bands that tour the bar and small venue circuit. I guess I want to show my appreciation with more than the price of admission.

I mean purses. But yeah those grocery bags too.

That’s cool! Maybe you could post a pic of your favorite few?

A year ago, I got rid of one that belonged to my folks. Otherwise, I’d have FOUR now! It was actually the most fun one to drive, but it was also one that had the least sentiment attached to it. Since I sold it to a nephew (actually, he’s my first cousin once removed), I still get to see it now and then.

But yeah, I catch your drift. Seems like a tough problem to have, don’t it?

I have a friend who used to collect them. I think he’s moved on to VWs now. Yeah, I know…

Beer glasses:

  • It all started when I bought one as a souvenir from the bar that served as the exterior of Cheers in Boston.
  • Then I picked up an old Schlitz glass from an antique store in Wisconsin.
  • Then on a subsequent visit I bought an old Old Style mug from that same antique store in Wisconsin.
  • Then a friend got me a Simpsons pint glass as a gift
  • Then I got a pair of pint glasses as a thank you gift from my local public radio station. I specifically donated the amount I did to get the pint glasses.
  • Then I got yet another pint glass when I visited the North Coast Brewery in Fort Bragg, CA a few years ago.

Old car tape players. I have five 8-tracks and one under dash cassette, along with two cassette to 8-track adapters. I have one home 8-track tape deck. I have six turntables, including a 1970s portable stereo model, two 1960s school units, a Pioneer, and a Sansui. I also have enough receivers, amps, cassette decks, and speakers for three complete systems. I have six 5 inch AC/DC TV sets, one of which is color!

Why do I have all this stuff that I never use anymore? I guess it’s because I wanted them badly when I was young so I overdid it when I found them dirt cheap at yard sales!

Boats.

3 small sailboats, 2 kayaks, a rowboat, and a canoe. Last year I sold my sleep aboard sailboat, but I want another one. And I’m probably going to rescue 2 more small sailboats this summer.

Books.

I was going to say nothing until I started reading the posts.

I have 3 pocket knives of different sizes and can’t recall when I last used one.

I have several sets of really nice decorated Japanese chopsticks. I had even more but a while ago I gave several sets to a guy at work so his family could each have their own pair.

I have 5 pairs of headphones/ear buds but they do serve several different purposes and I use 3 pairs regularly.

Computers.

One is linked to my TV, so I can watch Internet stuff on a big screen.
Two are in my study*, so I can do stuff (e-mail / play games etc.) whilst checking scores or listening to music on the other.
One is for travelling with.

*just a small room with two computer desks…

Shoes - tennies, sandals, boots

Jackets

Bowls - I love colorful bowls

Sheets - I also love colorful, pretty sheets

Food storage containers

I have 1 carbon road bike, 1 hard-tail mtb, 1 touring/commuter adventure bike, so since they all have a different purposes, I count them separately.

I have several pairs of skis, but only use one of them. Like the bikes, different skis have different purposes for varying conditions. Two pairs will never touch snow again because they are ancient, but I just can’t throw them in the trash. Maybe I will make a shot-ski out of one of them.

Backpacks, so I have exactly the right one for the need and for travel.

Flashlights

Too many flashlights, but sadly never enough
