I was being slothful, but I finally had to get up and make a Vegemite & cheddar sanger. Eating it now.
Another scorcher in the hub, wonder if I can get the one fan pointed in my direction?
One load of laundry done. Naptime!
{{{{Maus}}}}
Vent as needed, that’s what we’re here for.
So, going to Wally World?
How’d you know?
OK, in all seriousness, I just planned to hit the laundromat (hence, the not-wearing of real pants; they’re in the wash) and a drive-through for a pick-up order.
As so often happens, plans changed a bit.
I passed a local mom’n’pop nursery that I’ve seen a jillion times but never investigated. Driving by, I literally yelled out loud, in my empty car, “It’s my DAY OFF dammit!” and defiantly u-turned (as if anyone was around to judge me) and went in.
… knowing full well that I’d buy stuff.
In my PJ pants.
Sooooooo … now I do need to go to Wally World doggo and in my PJs, too, thankyouverymuch (gotta blend in with the locals!) to get potting soil.
Because I bought an old-fashioned bleeding heart, which I have wanted forever but ya can’t grow them in Texas, and I have a pretty pot to grow it in, too!
This is WAY more fun than the “supposed to do” crap that I swear, I’ll totally get to, later.
But I did at least get a load of jeans’n’masks and stuff washed, and since it’s both sunny & windy, they’re hanging outside to dry nicely.
RoxStar has been returned to her maternal unit. We had a short but fun day that included a “picnic” in the basement. She also helped me load the recycling into my car (the kid is strong!) and after I dumped it at the convenience center, we headed to the playground.
Turns out today is NJHS induction day at Daughter’s school, and she saw us arriving at the playground. So she came over and claimed her spawn, and I left, stopping for some grass seed before returning to a blissfully quiet house. FCD is sleeping again - poor guy. I’ll go out shortly and spread the seed and start the watering. Or I’ll do it tomorrow - who knows?? It’s looking like my motivation is pretty much gone.
So, what’s up with the rest of you?
Welll, time for me to stop having fun in Mumperland and change out the waaaaay overdue cat litter boxes (3 cats, 2 boxes)~where is shoe when I really need her?, then do some quick kitchen clutter pickup and a quick sweep through the non-bedrooms clearing out the grossest of offending messes before getting in the car in time to pickup our teenager roommate from middle school. I guess I should cram lunch in there too so I’m not tempted to grab drive-thru on the school pickup run. Baked beans on toast sounds good. Heads off the the kitchen to slap some bread into the toaster…
Such a riveting, glamorous life.
I wish I had a hammock. If I did, I would go outside and doze on the back patio. It’s nearly 90F outside and sunny, and I’m so very sleepy. My husband and I had a stupid “Very Serious Discussion,” which resulted in a near-argument, and of course like I did here yesterday, I came up with an ill-timed, inappropriate quip and promptly vomited it out without thinking about it first because humor is usually the way I deal with negative emotion, but a lot of people find it offensive, husband occasionally included. So that happened.
Anyway, today is better. My Big Deal went through yesterday. Now I’m working on Big Deal #2 & 3. FCM inspired me to make challah yesterday. I mixed it in the bread machine, braided it and, because I was feeling lazy, chucked it back in the machine to bake. It turned out really well, though I do wish I’d put it in the oven with an egg wash instead.
Today is Full Immunity Day here at Chez Nellie. I plan to go to the gym to celebrate. I’ve been very excited about this, but today I’m feeling weak and tired for some reason. I’m going to have to soldier up and get moving anyway. What’s the worst that could happen?
Yesterday I saw the cat that recognizes me and treats me as a friend. She was happy to see me. I got my yoga pants nice and furry, and after she rolled in bracken, nice and leafy, too. I get nervous for outdoor cats. It’s a scary, dangerous world out there. Three years ago, we had something like 17 horrific cat mutilations, and they never caught the perp. Anyway, maybe someone can explain the outdoor cat concept to me.
Maus, this is a great place for venting. In one of my favorite books, Dickens’ Bleak House, the perpetually-cheerful uncle has a Growlery, a secret room where he can stomp around and make terrible noises and facial expressions. It’s what allows him to be so cheerful the rest of the time. I always wanted one in the school where I taught. Anyway, consider us your Growlery.
shoe, I don’t think there’s a bright line differentiating PJ’s from regular pants any more. Personally, I think the world would be a better place if people wore comfy pants with cartoon kitties or choo-choos on them.
{{{{wordy}}}}–in lieu of a hammock and because those Very Serious Discussions can lead to self-recrimination that isn’t really warranted.
I always thought that all the stirring was essential to the making of risotto. I’ll have to get out the instapot recipe book when we get back to the valley and look that up.
P.S. glad to hear Mrs. Magill is feeling better, for awhile anyway.
Speaking of getting back to the valley; we’re going back tomorrow. Wifey has real estate things to do and I have prescriptions to pick up and assorted other errands, plus I need to try to make some semblance of order out of my garage, and decide what tools and stuffs go into the garage sale. Most likely things I will discover I need shortly after I sell them.
Our newly painted basement floor looks good. The paint does show every little imperfection in the finish work, but it’s now pretty well sealed, which was the point.
Happy May Day tomorrow. I know it’s not a popular holiday, but that’s only because nobody has figured out a way to monetize it. (Yet)
Gotta go make a phone call. Yuck.
I use this recipe, but I’ve increased the salt to 1 teaspoon, the black pepper to 1/2 teaspoon, and the parmesan cheese to a full cup. I also use a dry red wine.
Thanks Maus. If it gets past the executive committee I’ll give it a try.
It is beautiful day here in flyover country I was up at usual time. Sunflower slept in a bit. We headed out for the day. We ran her car through the car wash and headed out to the mall where we walked for 90 minutes. From there we went to an estate sale. The home was lovely. We mostly go to look through the houses. There was a knife block full of junk on the kitchen counter with one gem: A Calphalon 8" chef’s knife. It is well made and kind of heavy but perfectly balanced.
I have seen the Calphalon set in the upscale kitchen stores and they are pricey. The block full of junk knives was priced at 50.00. I talked to the guy running the sale and offered 25.00 for the gem. He took the offer. We agreed that someone would undoubtedly pay 50.00 for the rest of them so the 25.00 was pure profit. We got some lunch on the way home. At home, Sunflower repotted a couple of house plants while I put a proper edge on my new knife.
In little bit I will start cooking. Tonight we are having breakfast for dinner: Corned beef hash, home fries and over easy eggs with toast.
I don’t let my cats out because I would constantly worry about them in the city. I love them sooooo much I need to always have them within reach, not out doing their own thing. Plus there are the other issues of fleas and mammal diseases: just easier to keep them in. Working cats on a farm would be different, I’d have to steel myself to not get too attached. The chances of me living on a farm or ranch at this late date are eerily close to nil.
The 3 cats I have now have the least interest in going outside when the door is open of any I’ve ever had. They must know how good they have it.
That and people who get a dog, then leave it tied up outside all the time. Seriously, why bother? When we adopted ours from the rescue groups, we had to agree they’d be indoor cats, which suits me fine. No fleas, no ticks, no fighting, no bringing home who-knows-what, no encounters with vehicles. Ziva has no desire to go out. Taz has escaped a couple of times, but he goes about 30’, then lies down and yowls. He’s weird.
Salsa’s made supper - I was happy to drive to Leonardtown to pick it up. I had the seafood chimichanga, and it was yum! So now I haz a happy tummee!!
Lots of plans for tomorrow - mainly getting the basement in order to paint before the floor goes in. I’ll be hauling stuff to the shed or the shop, and eventually, a few items will be moved to my studio while the installation happens on May 27/28. That’s the last big project here. I think. We shall see.
For now - chillage!
I actually feel pretty good about this. Now … dinner?
I’m tempted to go back to Meijer (where I returned jeans earlier) just to get a hot’n’ready rotisserie chicken. I mean, I’m still wearing the same PJs, sooo … I must be O.K. looking!
… or not.
Went to two grocery supermarkets. No hot rotisserie.
Not a COVID thing, as I swear I’ve seen them for sale within the last few weeks.
Hmph. Now dinner is T.B.D.
Nappage, followed by a gin&Tonic, and Paprika Chicken with rice and broccoli with Calabrian chilies. And Alex Catt showing her bunghole on the weekly Zoom call.
: flings confetti with wild abandon

My inner drill sergeant yelled, “There are no slackers in this woman’s army!” (Full disclosure: I used to say this to my students when they groaned about having to actually get out of their seats and move around.) It worked, and I went to the gym. First impression: “Wow, this place is PURPLE!” No tour, so I wandered around and figured things out for myself. I did a little strength training and did a good stint on the treadmill.
My sentiments exactly. You want to just visit a critter and not have it shed in your house? Go to the zoo. I’ll make an exception for both barn cats (as Boo said) because they’re usually far from danger and for sheepherding dogs, provided, for the latter, there are several of them. Dogs are pack animals. Leaving a single dog outside is cruelty, IMHO.
shoe, sorry about the dearth of rotisserie chicken. I guess Friday is a popular day for those. Hope you found something nummy for dinner.
Who does she zoom with, Sex Kittens Unchained?
That’s my favorite kind of abandon! Thank you!
Evening all. A long bath and a short nap, then coached soccer (boys won 4-2, coming back from 1-2 down) and got a ham sammich from Which 'Wich, and remembered why I don’t care for them that much. Need to plan tomorrow’s games (9:00am for the girls and 1:30pm for the boys) tonight before bedtime so I’m ready to go tomorrow.
nellie, good news on the immunity.
hippie, sounds like you made the rare deal where both sides are happy. Enjoy.
talky, sometimes two people who are together the most mis-understand each other…he’ll get over it and you’ll do better.
shoe, yeah on the plants and the mode of dress (common in Chez Rat).
Wizard, hope the Mrs. is still doing well. And you’re not whining–you’re talking to friends…
Ok, need to finish the sammich and get about planning my lineups for tomorrow. All y’all take care.
Friday, so our usually usual outing was for Mexican food. I had half of a shredded beef taco salad, four hot wings, and two margaritas. About half-done with a home-made margarita.
Kinda (not) watching a Discovery channel show on gold mining in the waters off Alaska.
TGIF! and EoM to boot!
Irked until five, came home to the new shoes and a Chewy order on my step, took Nelson to the dog park and swung through Bojangles for supper.
Not much going on at CasaRoja this weekend.
Stay safe and healthy y’all!
