Okay, who’s with me for Spinal Tap next weekend? Saturday has generally been our night of choice for these things, so pipe up if you’d rather go Friday.

I have never been to one of these, but I would like to go…

Arg. But I am out of town on the 4th and 5th.

Keep me updated, Minty if you decide to do one of those other flicks!

Sorry you’ll miss it, but other flicks are a definite possibility. There’s no way I’ll be missing the Big Lebowski, but there’s still another month to plan for that one.

Hmm, well Moxmaiden nearly jumped up and down when I told her about “The Neverending Story” coming to the midnight movies. Oddly enough that also falls on the “sleepover at grandma’s” night. Not sure what we’d do with the baby though.

I can’t say that any of those movies really move me, but the company is good, so we’re open to the idea. I’ll look up some trailers for them and refresh my memory of what they are. I honestly have no idea what “The Big Lebowski” is about. Trailers may pique some interest though. I’ll check back in here after I get my home PC repaired and can look that kind of stuff up. The first saturday sidewalk sale is only a week away!

Enjoy,
Steven

The Big Lebowski? You haven’t seen The Big Lebowski? Then I suppose you won’t have any idea why, during The Hulk, I kept waiting for Sam Neill to say Darkness warshed over the Hulk.

Truly, one of the funniest movies ever.

I haven’t seen “The Hulk” yet. So yea, haven’t got any idea why you were waiting for Sam Neill to say that.(who is Sam Neill? Do you mean Sam Elliot? The General? I did a quick cast check and didn’t see a Sam Neill)

“This is Spinal Tap” I looked it up and tried to find some discographies of Spinal Tap to see if I could place any of their music. I think I remember the front album cover for “Bitch School” though. The trailer didn’t look interesting. It looked more like a documentary than a comedy(as the IMDB described it). Did I find the wrong trailer? Anyway, I expect to be blowing several hundred dollars of our disposable income on repairing the computer after its meltdown last week. That and staying up half the night to attend the First Saturday sidewalk sale on the night of the 4th will probably wipe out my weekend next weekend(even if I had money left). I expect disposable income to be available in August though and we’d be up for something then.

Melissa and I don’t make it to very many movies. This year we’ve already seen more movies than most other years(Matrix at midnight movies, Daredevil, Matrix: Reloaded, Bulletproof Monk, X-Men, and plan to see a couple more before year-end(Terminator 3, Matrix Revolutions and LOTR:Return of the King)) and we’re still in the single digits. We just don’t do the mainstream entertainment media much. MAYBE once a month. We do read lots of books though, and M:tG has taken a bit of our leisure time from us in the past(although not so much anymore, much to our chagrin. Sucks not to have very many people in the area to play with).

I seem to recall The Big Lebowski being highly recommended, and your recommendation bumps it as well. Melissa really wants to see “The Hulk” but the whole “his dad messed around with him when he was a baby” bit puts me off. I’ll admit I didn’t follow the comic book all that much, but that is way different from the Hulk I remember. Might be cool just for the eye candy though.

Enjoy,
Steven

“This is Spinal Tap” is a spoof of rockumentaries. The band is completely made up.

This is also the only movie on the list that I’m really interested in seeing. Since this is a long weekend, I might even be able to make it!

Sorry, Sam Elliot. The cowboy narrator of The Big Lebowski. Even if you can’t make the midnight showing in August, you definitely need to rent it.

Now, will somebody please tell me that Mtgman is joking about not having any idea what Spinal Tap is? Around here, that’s like not knowing the Parrot sketch or the collected wisdom of ralph Wiggum.

It’s a fine line between clever and stupid, really.

Nope, not joking about Spinal Tap. Don’t read this bit if you are sensitive to age issues.I was eight years old when the movie came out. Didn’t hit my radar until many years later when I heard of it in passing(a reference to the “Bitch School” album cover IIRC). Actually thought they were a real band until Zyada’s post. Heck, they even have their own page on the Rolling Stone website. Had I bothered to read it instead of scrolling down to the discography section I’m sure I would have noticed that they refer to the group as an “inside joke”.

I know a fair bit of Monty Python, but only smatterings of Ralph Wiggum. My pop culture trivia skills are sorely lacking I’m afraid. No worries, I make up for it with tons of useless knowledge in other subject areas. I can hold my own in geek contests, even on this board.

This weekend looks pretty solidly booked. Both sides of the family decided we were coming to their place for the 4th. Luckily her side wants us early in the day and want us to scrape and paint her grandmother’s house during the heat of the day(between noon and four) and my side of the family wants us at my sisters place out beyond Rockwall at five for grilled fajitas and fireworks that night. After the fireworks I’m heading to First Saturday to buy some new components for my computer(which had some fireworks of it’s own a week or so ago) and expect to be out until ~3AM. Whee! No plans(other than sleeping in and re-building the PC) for Saturday yet though. Maybe I can sneak away to get caught up on my Spinal Tap knowledge and hang out with you guys that evening though. Moxmaiden has no interest in the show, although once I tell her it is all a joke she may be more interested. She likes comedies. Same disclaimer as before though. She was six when the movie came out. She’s a huge country music fan. Not really her type of either movie or music. Still, as mentioned above, the company is good, so you never know.

Enjoy,
Steven

That sounds like one “maybe” vote for Saturday night. Anyone else have any interest? Or want to pick another date instead? The Big Lebowski is awfully tempting too.

Aside: 8? 6? Feh, y’all are nothing but children. I was a way sophisticated 13-year-old when the Tap first rocked the theaters. :stuck_out_tongue:

Did you sneak in?!? It was rated R! How did a widdle 13 year-old make it into that movie?

Man, I never did any rebellious things like sneak into a R-rated movie when I was 13.

Come to think of it, not sure if I should be proud of ashamed of that tidbit. Was I no more than a sheep? Content to stay where I was and leave the “grown up” stuff alone? Curse my subserviant demeanor!

OTOH, I had read Aztec when I was ten or so… Maybe I wasn’t so sheltered.

Enjoy,
Steven

Maybe I can work a deal with Mrs. Chef where I stay home with the kids while she goes to see Sixteen Candles and she stays home with the kids while I go to see one of the other ones (Fear and Loathing, maybe).

Steven - Are you referring to the Aztec with all the sexy stuff? They had that in my military school library! I can only assume the librarian ordered it without reading it, thinking it would be a nice piece of historical fiction the kiddies could learn from (and we certainly did!)

Yep, that Aztec. ~1000 pages right out of penthouse forum. Throw in the drugs, homoerotica, cannibalism, and pedophilia and it makes for one hell of shock for a ten year old. Probably aged me a fair bit to read that thing. I’d certainly put exposure to that book ahead of anything I might see in an R-rated movie.

I’ll be incommunicado starting Thursday afternoon. PC at home is fried and only access I have is at work. If we’re not planned by then I’ll need updates by phone. Think most of our regulars have my number(s) by now, if not drop me a line.

Enjoy,
Steven
