Despite having posted to these two threads, I’m not automatically subscribed to them. My options are the same as before—no email notification, but subscription. Has anybody else experienced a similar issue?
At some point DesertNet will discover one of the mail servers is malfunctioning and restart it.
And then you will see all your emails, probably in a big lump.

The question wasn’t about email notification, but the subscription itself. Notice he says his user options are “automatic subscription, no email notifications”, but the OP is not being subscribed (vs notified).
Yes, exactly. FWIW, I’m subscribed to this thread just fine, and likewise to the test thread I posted to earlier, so perhaps it was just a momentary glitch.
This has happened to me, but rarely, only a couple of times.
