The problem is the originals are still going strong. So any attempt to recreate them will seem weak in comparison. The Stooges were as much a product of their times as anything. The 30s and 40s give it a right time feel.
As a kid growing up in the 70s I was never a fan of The Stooges. I preferred the more cerebral humor of Abbot & Costello or Laurel & Hardy as far as olde timey comedy went. But as I got older I did learn to appreciate the perfect timing and effortless simplicity in their extremely silliness.
Having said that when I saw the trailer the other day and realized it’s set in modern day, when the young guy says, “Are you guys on Facebook? I’ll poke you” and the three of them simultaneously shot up their hands in defense and went “NYAAA!” I genuinely laughed out loud at that!
Yeah, that is a big hurdle. Imagine trying to create a ‘new’ A&C or L&H. I think they did try a L&H remake in the 80s and it failed miserably. Because The Stooges are so over the top it seems like it’d be easier. But as others have said, their comedy was just as specific and personal as A&C or L&H, and not something that just anyone could do so well.
