I say it’s about time. All the things he said after Tiger’s indiscretions became public, I’m surprised it took this long. Hey Stevie: Tiger turned you into a household name. He made you a multi-millionaire. Your job was to carry his bag and shut the F up. Instead you betrayed him in his darkest hour. And now you’re complaining? Did you learn nothing from your predecessor? Well, at least Fluff got Furyk’s bag. But he didn’t violate the unwritten rules of caddying. You did, and now your 15 minutes are up! Don’t act so surprised. We all learned together that Tiger’s a douchebag. We didn’t need you to tell us, dipshit.
Ummm…no comment on the rest of your screed, but you are aware that Steve has already been hired by Adam Scott - considered a very promising young gun on the Tour, right?
With many caddies, the rule of “carry the bags and shut up” makes perfect sense. It does NOT make ANY sense in the case of Steve Williams and Tiger Woods.
Tiger was best man at Steve’s weddings. Their two families were close. Their wives were pals. Get it? This was NOT just a worker-employer relationship. If it had been Tiger could have fired Steve at ANY time for ANY reason, and Steve would simply have looked for another job.
Tiger made his relationship with Steve a lot more than just business. He treated Steve like a friend. And a friend has the right to be disappointed in you when you behave like an asshole.
Do you want to argue the point that Tiger has behaved like an asshole?
Steve Williams did NOT go around trashing Tiger. I’ve SEEN the interviews Williams gave, and they were surprisingly mild. Regardless, if Tiger took them as a betrayal, fine. He has a right to fire Steve and surround himself with yet more ass kissers and yes men. Tiger has always had millions of those. What he hasn’t had is many real friends. HE just fired one of the last.
P.S. I don’t even LIKE Steve Williams. Like most fans, I’ve always regarded him as a goon and thug, for the way he’s treated fans.
But even there, do you have ANY doubt that, when Steve harassed spectators, he was doing EXACTLY what Tiger told him to do?
Tiger has never cared about his fans, and has always treated them as a necessary nuisance at best. Why so many of those fans are STILL determined to make excuses for him is beyond me.
His young gun days are long gone.
First of all, I’m not a fan of Tiger and especially not of his behavior during his marriage. In golf, I generally hope the underdog wins and Tiger was a favorite most of his career. Stevie’s comments regarding his “loss of respect” for Tiger really irked me. If you’re truly a friend, you don’t say such things publicly. In private, of course you do. But if anyone had a bigger ego than Tiger, it was Stevie. And his public statements after the news of the scandal came out were disgraceful, and clearly self-serving. If he was such a friend and they were so close, how did he not have any idea about Tiger’s indiscretions? Tiger could have gone public that Stevie knew everything. But among these two, Tiger seems to be the bigger man.
Steve WIlliams didn’t exactly go on “60 Minutes” or “Dateline NBC” and expose any of Tiger’s secrets. All he did was defend himself in the Australian press against charges that Steve knew what Tiger was doing and helped him do it.
I don’t feel too sorry for Steve, who probably has more money than I ever will. But Tiger remains a jerk who demands unwavering loyalty from everyone around him but never gives it in return.
My dream group in upcoming PGA tournaments is Jim Furyk with “Fluff” Cowan on the bag, and Scott/Williams and Tiger/New Guy.
I think this should be changed to: Steve WIlliams has not yet gone on “60 Minutes” or “Dateline NBC” and expose any of Tiger’s secrets.
Although it would basically end his caddie career, if any caddie could get a multi-million dollar book deal, it would be Stevie Williams, especially if he has any salacious details on Tiger’s private life, (which he has previously denied any knowledge).
There is an implicit player-caddie confidentiality agreement, but it appears Stevie is really bitter and a book-deal probably beats any 401(k) that he has for a retirement annuity. I am sure book publishers will be knocking on his door.
Quite true- maybe there’s a big tell-all book in Steve Williams’ future. He will then join the long list of people who’ve written more books than they’ve read.
Yeah. Not exactly sure I was confusing him with, but you’re absolutely right.
Still, the fact is that at 31 he’s got a lot of good golf ahead of him and unlike Tiger will actually be playing this year including the FedEx tournys. His 17 world golf ranking ain’t shabby either.
Nobody, Tiger included ,can guarantee that Tiger will return ,or make money again. Williams has to think of himself for the future, unless Tiger has him on a retainer. Caddying is his profession. He can not sit on the sidelines forever.
from what I consider a reliable source, Stevie was getting paid a straight salary of around $1 million per year and small percentage of TW’s tournament winnings. Not a typical player/caddie arrangement. Stevie had his own sponsors and I think they (Valvoline Oil) might have been getting ticked that Stevie was not getting any airtime. Stevie takes off his caddie bib before players finish hole 18 so cameras can pick up the logos on his shirt.
reliable source is a member of the 4th estate that travels with the tour most weeks.
Hell, he may have to lend Tiger some money.
Interesting take on this from Mike Vaccaro of the NY Post.
No love lost there.
The NY Post is mostly a POS but the Sports section isn’t bad.
RE NY Post article. No doubt, Steve Williams was a thug. But he was Tiger’s Thug and that is exactly what Tiger wanted him to be be and he did it very well. He should have not been fired for the reasons in the NY Post article.
He should have been fired when TW had Jimmy Swaggert’s “I have sinned” mea culpa in Feb 2010. When he claimed that he “would have more respect for the game” cough.
When I heard this, i was…so what? The only reason anyone knows who Steve Williams is is because of Tiger, if Tiger wants to go with someone else, so be it.
Wow, Stevie Williams is a gigantic douchebag. Tiger makes him a rich, well known man; and Stevie calls his first win (It’s not your win, douchebag, you’re a fucking caddie) the most satisfying “win” (YOU’RE A FUCKING CADDIE!!!) of his career. Nevermind the Masters, the British Open, or any of the other majors that Tiger won while you carried his bag, this most recent one, one only important because you’re a petty, pathetic piece of shit, is the most satisfying.
Fucking asswipe.
Tiger looks to be on his way to missing the cut this week. He is +5 midway through his back nine and T65 out of 78 golfers playing in the morning. he started out great, with three birdies on the first 5 holes, and tied for the lead at one point. 8 holes later, he is has made two dbl bogeys and 4 bogeys.
I saw some other golfers comment that Williams kept saying 'I" all the time. He did not mention Scott at all. He is pissing golfers off.
