Tiger Woods injured

That or his balls will be so blue he’ll leave divots even with his putter.

I believe Tiger’s season usually starts at Torrey Pines, late January.

Yeah, I guess I typed it twice. oops. Did I mention that I have 5 holes-in-one? Really, I do. I got the bar tabs as evidence!

Putt putt doesn’t count. :stuck_out_tongue:

Not Tiger.

Oxford Dictionary definition:
sport / spôrt/
• n. 1. an activity involving **physical exertion **and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment: team sports such as baseball and soccer

Bolding mine. Golf is not a sport, it is a game. The fact that millions play it as a game/hobby does not make it a sport. The fact that it requires skill does not make it a sport. Lots of people play darts, poker, chess, and bowling - they all require skill, but no one considers them ‘sports’.

When a 60-year old player damn near wins the biggest tournament in the country…then golf can no longer consider itself a sport.

Have you ever seen Tiger hit a drive? Do you not think that involves physical exertion?

So you think that golf requires no physical exertion, and 60-year olds cannot excel at any sport? I don’t think you will find support for either of those propositions.

By that definition, a circle jerk is a sport.

I’m surprised this sport isn’t more popular. The barrier to entry is nil as you are born with the equipment.

It would be banned as being discriminatory to women.
Golf most decidedly involves physical exertion. That’s true even if you do get to use carts. For the pros, who don’t (except on the senior tours), it’s quite a bit of exertion, potentially. Ask Ken Venturi.
By the way, I defy anyone to bowl a set of 8 games, and do that twice in a day, and then say bowling does not involve physical exertion.

I am Tiger Woods.

160 frames a day? Are you serious? Of course thats a workout!

I’ve gotten blisters after 30 frames!

Excel? Sure, they can excel - against people in their age group, for example. But how many 60-year olds do you see in top-level baseball/football/soccer/tennis/swimming/cycling/rugby/boxing etc? Do you know anyone even in their 50s?

I’ve seen Tiger hit a drive (I have family near Hazeltine). He certainly has skill. But I can hit a golf ball too. I’ve played rounds of golf. Hitting a motionless ball and walking does not count as ‘physical exertion’. Breathing takes some physical exertion, but breathing wouldn’t be considered a sport: the level of physical exertion needed is so low, anyone can do it. Ditto with golf. Skill is the decider for golf, not the level of physical exertion. Golf is great as a game. It’s just not a sport.

BTW, circle jerking isn’t a sport because the level of skill needed is so low (anyone with the equipment can do it  )

Ever

You know there is a flipside here. In some of the other endeavors you list, it is quite common for teenagers to compete - and excel. Whereas in golf it is (not checking any record books) quite unusual for someone under 20 to win a PGA event.

How demanding can an activity be if a kid can be the best in the world a la Chris Evert, many swimmers and gymnasts, straight from high school NBAers, etc.?

Is billiards officially a sport?

Nope. It’s a game. Just like darts, poker, chess, etc.

Doesn’t mean it can’t be competitive. Just means it ain’t a sport.

Huh? Teenagers have way more energy (and, in the case of gymnastics, flexibility and (probably) lack of a fear of falling!) then someone in their 30s. Heck, in most professional sports, athletes in their late 20s are considered either in or past their prime. Agassi was, I believe, the oldest player to be No. 1 at like 33 or something.

Teenagers don’t win big tournaments/matches most of the time mainly due to nerves and lack of experience - it’s rarely because they were ‘too young’ to keep up physically with their older opponents.

And golf has had teenage winners - for a major championship I think the record is 19 for the men and 18 for the women.

350 yards?

Interesting that you put it this way, since golf is an olympic sport now :).

People argue about what constitutes a sport all the time, and people have different criteria. At least the consensus seems to be that golf is a sport, since it’s covered by all the major sports media and so on.

Is anything “officially” a sport?
