To my fellow California voters: [gubernatorial race]

Please be advised, a very bad mayor has begun the process of running for governor of our fair benighted state in 2010.

I am asking you now to look at his record as mayor*, and when you have done so, I think you will agree with me that we should all run screaming in the opposite direction and vote for anyone else but him.

I guess he is a Democrat. I am not one of those, so I can’t vote against him in the primary. I hope those who are Democrats will take heed of my plea. There are lots of other Democrats apparently primed to be in the race, any one of whom would have to be better than this ham-handed hack.

*I wish I had a link that would summarize better than I can, but there is a litany of crummy appointments, laughable law enforcement due to the chief of police that he appointed, a large number of executive positions created in city government at huge salaries while the city can’t meet its budget (so the people who actually do the work, not to mention firefighters and police, are let go). Oh, yes, and the latest fiasco here. This man is never around to fix a problem, only to talk. He never shuts up; put him in front of a microphone, any microphone, and you are lucky to escape with your sanity. And can we talk about the personal scandals? Does this maroon think these things won’t come up during an election? He must have lost his sanity.

Now, I usually don’t much care who is governor. But in this case, I just want his term as mayor to end so he can sink back into the obscurity which he so richly deserves. Let’s all help him get to that lovely, peaceful place, well out of the limelight. Can we? I thank you all in advance.

Moving political thread from IMHO to Great Debates.

I don’t think I can vote for San Francisco mayor.

Or even Lancaster mayor for that matter! :stuck_out_tongue:

He’s running for governor of the State of California. :smack:

Eh, it’s too early to think about. Two years might as well be a hundred in politics and computers.

This doesn’t present such a bad picture: Homicide up during his term but other serious crimes down; unemployment down; city health insurance extended from children to young adults; less patronage in city government (you seem to think there’s more). Based on all that he would make a good governor, perhaps the best CA has had in a long time. What’s the problem?

Isn’t Arnie going to be running again?

You’d rather have Jerry Brown run than Gavin Newsome?

Term limit.

Isn’t Newsom, like, famously popular with the ladies?

As mentioned above, a lot of San Francisco’s “vital signs” have improved during Newsom’s tenure. He’s wildly popular - he won his re-election last year with 72% of the vote.

Regarding the illegal immigrants thing, there’s not much he can do. The city proclaimed itself as a sanctuary city back in 1989 during Art Agnos’ term - well before he even thought of being mayor.

Whether or not you agree with this or not, it’s not Gavin Newsom’s fault.

Wow. Way to write an entire OP without once mentioning the name of said mayor.

I actually met Gavin Newsom when he performed my brother’s wedding ceremony. My brother married a woman, who knew Mr. Newsom through a friend-of-a-friend kind of deal, but the mayor also presided over many same sex weddings. I cynically believe without evidence that that’s what prompted the OP more than anything actually in the OP.

You know why!

He is gonna make us all marry queers!

:(:(:frowning:
Please. Gavin Newsom seems to be running SF pretty damn well, and you’d be doing well to get him as your governor. Although I kind of have the feeling that Arnie isn’t terrible either.

Ha! The best laugh I’ve had all day! I am the proverbial $3 bill, sweetie, although frankly I think Newsom’s gay marriage thing was mostly grandstanding. We’ll see how it turns out in the long run.

I started this thread in IMHO because this is mostly just about the way I feel about the guy (perhaps I should have made that more clear in the OP so that it wouldn’t have been moved).

To quote Lina Lamont’s character in The Dueling Cavalier (and if that doesn’t polish my gay cred nothing will) “I can’t stand him!” (and sorry I can’t duplicate that accent in printed form.) But it’s nice to know so many out-of-staters thinks he’s such a prize, maybe we can steer him over to your state.

Ta,
Roddy

[shrug] Wouldn’t mind having him as governor of Florida.

The only downside would be the droppings raining down from flying pigs.

He’s got my vote.

Such as? He did have an affair with his campaign manager’s wife, but that’s ho-hum nowadays; Newsom himself was in the process of getting divorced at the time anyway. There’s a lot worse dirt on Schwarzenegger, but it didn’t stop him.

Oh, sorry about that. I should have looked at your handle more closely. Roderick’s a dead giveaway isn’t it?

I’ll have to wait to see who’s running, or even if I’m eligible to vote for California’s governor, but for now I don’t see any reason not to support Mr. Newsom. I’d also much prefer him to Jerry Brown. Who knows though? Maybe Sylvester Stallone or Jean Claude Van Damme will make a run for it.

Newsom does nothing but glad hand and pose for media ops. He’s not evil or anything, but he has done virtually nothing- well other than the usual Patronage and such like issues which are so common in SF they aren’t even minor scandals anymore.

I say we repeal the silly-ass term limits law and vote Arnie for Life.
