I wish I were being hyperbolic. Not as bad as the Nazi death camps, which isn’t and hasn’t been going on (no thanks to imbeciles calling for that), similar enough to the ghettos that the comparison is apt. Thanks for the links. I had forgotten those threads and that poster. Had I recalled his character–smugly self-righteous (though lacking any basis for that high opinion of himself), unable to deal with the factual world, incompetent in logic, convinced of his own correctness even when caught in error, and utterly incapable of perceiving anyone else’s perspective–I would have disengaged from that other thread sooner.

If Israel is guilty of attempted genocide, then so are pretty much all of its neighbors, the US, the UK, most of Europe, and most other countries in the entire world at some point in the last half-century. Most countries have killed as many or more people, and destroyed as much or more property, as Israel has in Palestine/Gaza.

Which is why this is such ridiculous hyperbole. If this is attempted genocide, then there have been dozens, if not hundreds of attempted genocides in the last 50 years.

Yes. The US was at one point in time engaged in genocide of Native Americans. It was a brutal thing. The US is certainly funding the military operations related to Gaza, and thus guilty there. The UK has attempted genocide in many parts of the world. The Germans against the Jews.

Carpet bombing cities was mass murder, a violation of the Geneva Conventions, useless and evil. I notice that you think I have a problem with Jews. Let’s not confuse Israelis with Jews. Some Jews are Israelis, but not most Jews. Most Israelis are Jews, but not all Israelis.

Here is the 1948 UN definition of genocide

Article II: In the present Convention, genocide means any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group, as such:

(b) Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group;
(c) Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part;

Israel has done (a) (b) and (c) in Gaza. And we are still paying for it. The SDMB seems to have a determined contingent that demands only quick wholesale slaughter counts. That contingent can go stuff it. International law is clear.

Looking over this list, I can’t speak to (d) and (e) as to Gaza. But seeing (d) does bring to mind another series of events linked to Israel.
