Too soon to start talk of Gettysdope III?

Gettysdope directions

From Phila:
PA turnpike westbound to Gettysburg Pike US-15 exit (was I-17, now I-236), take US-15 south. Take ramp right onto York Street, US-30 west. Follow US-30 into the center of town to a circle. Go halfway around the circle, continuing to follow US-30, street name now Chambersburg Street. Go through the first light, and turn left halfway down the block onto Franklin Street, and proceed south. Franklin Street becomes Long Lane at Breckenridge Street, and the park is to your right. We’re in the Lion’s pavilion, which is a block past the brick administration building on your right.

From Pittsburgh:
PA turnpike eastbound to Gettysburg Pike US-15 exit. After that, follow above.

From Washington:
I-495 inner loop to I-270 towards Frederick, MD. Follow US-15 north, into PA. Take exit for PA-134/Taneytown Road towards Gettysburg. At the traffic light where PA-134 crosses US-15 Business/Steinwehr Avenue, the name changes to Washington Street. Proceed north two blocks and turn left on Gettys Street, which will dead end at Long Lane. Turn left and then right opposite Queens Street into the parking area.

Park recon: Several ballfields, playground equipment such as swings, slides, and the like for kidlets. Three pavilions, called Kiwanis, Lions, and Firemen’s. The first two are located closest to Long Lane & Queens Street, with the latter a block North at Long Lane & Gettys Street. I checked out the Firemen’s pavilion (natch) and it contains 10 large picnic tables which should accommodate 6 BPT* with comfort. The other two looked quite similar from the parking area.

For those who wondered about purchasing foodstuffs locally-there is a Kennies supermarket on Middle Street between West and Franklin Streets, less than ¼ mile away. Those folks using the Philly directions will pass a Giant supermarket on US-30 fairly close to US-15.

Any Dopers who would like a backup contact can email for my cell phone number: danceswithcats@att.net

*BPT=butts per table

I’ll be coming. I’ll bring some food. I’ll bring some stuff for the exchange. I’ll be happy to pack up all the left-over stuff from the exchange and bring it to Goodwill.

Slight change of plans…

Airman’s squadron picnic is tomorrow. Obviously, they didn’t bother to consult me about the date. So he’s taking Aaron for a little while, then they will join us later.

Since my presence at the squadron picnic isn’t mandatory, I’m not going and will be with y’all all day.

Saturday
Mostly cloudy with a chance of morning showers and thunderstorms…then becoming partly cloudy in the afternoon. Very warm and humid with highs in the upper 80s. West winds around 5 mph. Chance of rain 50 percent.

Saturday Night
Partly cloudy. Muggy with lows in the upper 60s. West winds around 5 mph…becoming northwest.

Sunday
Mostly sunny. Hot and humid with highs in the lower 90s. Southwest winds around 5 mph.

We’re planning to leave here around 9AM tomorrow. That should put us there about noon, depending on how many pit stops we have to make.

RT (may I call you “Rufus”? ), thanks for posting the forecast for us. Can’t wait for one of your world-class hugs!

Oh, meant to add: I’m definitely bringing meatballs. I’ll have a big batch of Swedish meatballs, and a smaller batch of meatballs in tomato meat sauce.

My apologies to all the veggie types, for whom none of this will be appropriate.

Since this has the signs of being a durable annual event, do we wish to forego the angst of searching for a suitable date every spring and designate the xth Saturday of y month as Gettysdope Saturday, such that all other events of State will have to plan around us? Or is everybody into the caprice of a floating date as we currently have it? A poll will be taken tomorrow, so vote early and often.

I just got back from three days in Wyoming, as in I walked through my front door about 1:30 this morning and am at work today, so I’m planning to wake up when I wake up and hit the road when I hit the road.

My best guess is that we’ll get there more or less noonishly.

Woohoo! Gettysdope!

If I decide I want a set date, can I bribe other Dopers to vote my way? :stuck_out_tongue:

My potato salad was made with the meat pots, but is otherwise vegetarian.

I picked up two packages of Hebrew National hot dogs (which have Triangle-K kashrut certification) for us meat-but-no-pig eaters.

See you folks tomorrow!

Cold Kimche
Cold Olive Medly
Cold Marinated Asparagus
An empty water cooler suitable for lemonade, and such.
Generic SPF 50 sunblock
one plastic table cloth
About fifty pictures of Gettysdope’s of long ago. (OK, up to two years ago.) Those are free.
Several albums of other pictures not so free.
A camera, and various lenses.
Yeah, I am ready.

I will pack up when I get up, drive up, and get there when I do.

Sorta like a doper easter?

A designated date sounds like a really good idea to me. It would make planning things a bit easier on this end.

Everything is mixed and baked. We should be there 11-12 ish.

With this lot, we’ve got about the same chance of having it fall on the same day every year…

You can all relax. Hamadryad is spending the night with my husband. Well, at our house, with my husband - while I’m in Canada doing my mom’s chores (she’s injured herself).

The chipotle and adobo chili has such a dusky smell- of meat and wood and pepper. The jalapeño pot is coming along nicely, too. I’ll check them both prior to going to bed and decide if either needs another tweak of Chinmayo powder.

Grille, propane (and spare), cooler, beverage dispenser, broom and bags are all loaded in the catmobile.

Methinks I’ll pop a cold Grolsch and go watch some Deadwood on DVD. See y’all in the morning! Drive safe now, y’hear?

My blackberry cake is made, I have iced tea (green and black), lemonade, and some vegetarian sausages and cutlets. We will not be there until between 2 and 3, but you should all still be there (I assume this goes all day, right?)…

It’s tomorrow! Yay! See you all then.

Thanks to everyone who braved the July heat and attended today. As always, it’s fun to hang out with other dopers and enjoy good food, great company, along with occasional insanity. :stuck_out_tongue:

I have your backpack, jayjay. If you’re close to the 30/222 confluence, I can drop it off, or it can be boxed up and shipped via FedEx. Your preference, Sir.

Some discussion was had regarding a set date for Gettydope future events, and the popular opinion was the third Saturday in July, which would be 21 July 2007 for Gettysdope IV. Those who object to this plan should speak now, or forever hold their pieces.

Okay, here they are, the pictures of GettysdopeIII!

Great big files, long time.

Crap…I knew I was going to forget that thing! It would probably be easier for everyone concerned for you to mail/fedex/whatever it. You’d have to drive all the way to the other side of town from that junction to get to our house. Email me your address and how much it’ll cost and I’ll send you the shipping.

Thanks, dances.
