I’m not going to give TMI. There is the possibility that I have the above condition and will know definitely after I visit the colorectal surgeon next week (now there’s a career!). I have done my Internet and Medline research but as usual would like to know if any Dopers have had this and what treatment or (God forbid) “procedure” cured the problem. (I do expect lieu to make an appearance shortly).

What worked for me: just go only when you REALLY have to go, and don’t strain so damn much, let things slide out on their own, and when finished don’t pinch too hard either. Mine went away after about a week of very careful shitting. I’ve been very careful since then too, and I’m happy to report no reoccurrence.
