I don’t mean to deprive you of the pleasure of pressing the button yourself, but couldn’t such an easy detectable sock be detected/banned by a small script?
Often I am able to ban them so fast because the system detected them, and the system also often prevents suspicious registrations from posting. Discourse is a bit different from vBulletin, but they both have automated capabilities to detect socks/spammers.
I’m Zimbabwean.
ZANU(PF) is ostensibly a socialist organization which has ruled the country since 1980.
Aside from a couple of white ministers (Norman, Stamps) the country - and, surrounding countries, Mozambique, Zambia, Malawi etc were run by black people. The socialist experiment failed in each case, but that was not at all related to the melanin count of the members of the ruling political party.
The troll is simply a troll.
Agreed. My point was that socialism can and often does have a majoritarian racist component. In the USA, that’d be white supremacy. In e.g. Zimbawe that’d be black supremacy. The troll in question, whose topic was the USA, just jumped over the general case to the US-specific version.
As to why totalitarians who are wearing a socialist disguise like to be racist, or more generally tribal (which is the usual African flavor), it’s simply that any predatory government lasts longer if they can persuade the majority that there’s a handy minority to hate instead.
Ahh, so the system is way ahead of me there. Good to know!
Oh, fuck off - why is it always “tribal” when it’s Africa, but not Spain or Ireland…
I’m sorry you misunderstood my inadequate explanation. I certainly don’t mean to imply any kind of ethnocentric superiority. Nor any idea that African societies are somehow primitive.
The Basques and Catalans in Spain are certainly tribal. As are the Protestants and the Catholics in Ireland and (with largely reversed roles) in Northern Ireland as well. The Central and South Americans have a lot of tribal stuff going on between their remaining indigenous cultures versus their 1600s+ immigrant cultures.
What I was saying is that by and large the sub-Saharan African countries, with the notable exception of your own South Africa, lack a large racial minority. At least they do if you (any you) define “Black” as dark-skinned with no further subdivisions.
So e.g. Ugandans can’t hate their white or Latin or Chinese minority because they don’t have one. As a result an e.g. Ugandan government hoping to foment hatred at a minority has to pick some other category of minority.
It’s a fact that African state = government boundaries were drawn by the Europeans a couple hundred years ago with scant regard for the then-existing natural boundaries between the nations = ethnic groups of the Tutsis, the Hutus, the Xhosa, the Zulus, etc. To name but 4 of dozens of distinct ethnicities on the continent. All of whom have dark skin.
A consequence of that willfully ignorant boundary drawing is that nearly every state today incorporates one or more majority ethnicities and a few minority ethnicities. Which minority(ies) can conveniently be demonized by an opportunistic government.
I mean nothing more than that. If “tribe” is an inapt or too baggage-laden word for that idea in your lexicon, please educate me.
The idea of a tribe or tribalism did originate in Europe, and then was imposed on Africa (and other parts of the world) as part of colonialism.
So I can understand why the terminology may hit a sore spot.
Umm…https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Expulsion_of_Asians_from_Uganda
Sorry, I realize that’s a nitpick with your overall point, which I don’t really disagree with.
My bad luck to pick an inapt example more or less at random :smack:
It will be interesting to see if @MrDibble points out many other examples that invalidate my premises. I know there are some I just don’t know whether they’re the exception or the rule.
I’ve noticed something about a lot of these trock-types. They follow a pattern- sign up, post something empty about an entirely non-controversial subject, looking for advice about something innocuous. Then, some weeks later, start a thread that encourages participation, usually in Cafe Society, because who doesn’t enjoy talking about their favorite things… After establishing a few months of non-controversial and sporadic presence, BAM, out comes the trolling, with constant needling in highly-charged political threads.
I also might be suffering confirmation bias.
But, on a totally unrelated note, ZosterSandstorm is really strawmanning for all he’s worth in the French cartoon/free speech thread.
Yeah, just coming in here to recommend ZosterSandstorm be added to the troll-without-a-clue watch list.
Let’s see if he’s going to bother providing a cite to back up his bullshit or just continue to shit’n’run.
Quite a lot of African countries have substantial non-Black minorities, whether it be non-Black Africans like the Bushmen and Pygmies, Arabs, Asian immigrants, or multiracial minorities like Coloured, Goffal etc.
I see someone’s already enlightened you about Ugandan Asians.
Nothing wrong with the perfectly functional words nation, people or ethnicity.
Thank you. I’ll adopt those suggestions.
Classy. Seriously. This exchange is the Dope at its best — what Cecil Adams envisioned back in ‘74.
Everybody say your goodbyes to @lum_s_husband:
Explain why expanding the list beyond Muslims is so awful.
That’s what you think they’re pissed about?
Bye, troll, you’ll be gone in 1…2…3 minutes.
That whole thread is about the need the insult and deride Muslims until they acknowledge their proper place. Is that inappropriate for other groups?
