Holy shit, this is the first time a thread I made needed a second version because it got too big. So much trolling!

Re: the poster Past_Paper and their thread about being homeless in NYC: I read that, started to respond (with the obvious questions that did eventually get asked) and noped out way before the poster revealed himself as someone who thinks the best plan is 1) live somewhere for free; 2) eat next to nothing and lose a pile of weight in a month “or so;” 3) instantly meet and snag a “top-shelf girl/woman;” and 4) ??? he won’t say what magic thing happens next.

Not to mention the various questions he won’t answer about how he has kept body and soul together for the past 2 years. Not to further mention that his only tangible asset apparently is “girl-talk,” which he likes and thinks he is good at.

I hope those of you participating are having a good time, because no other value is coming out of any of those exchanges.

You prefer ‘ant farm’?

To be clear, they are talking about losing about 10 times the amount of weight that various weight loss sites say is the maximum you can lose safely in one month. I do not even think that starvation would do it: I don’t think you can lose that much weight without amputation.

I was gently chastised for saying they reminded me of somebody else. That somebody else turns out to be a troll. I would not be surprised if this person is a troll, or a sock, but I’m not making a bet either way.

To be even more clear, they are either a loon who is severely disassociated from reality about many things, or they are manipulating the hell out of us.

For the record, a person can safely lose 25 pounds in a month under doctor’s supervision, I have done so myself for 6 months or a total of 150 pounds. That is not to say I was successful in keeping all of it off, but I think that is a separate issue.

I think that poster really overplayed their hand. Just the “I need advice on convincing a stranger to let me live in their basement” would have been enough to get people going. Adding the weight loss, the girl talk “superpower” and the undefined “next big thing” really puts it over the top.

But people are still engaging, as always happens.

If they did somehow manage to lose 50 to 70 pounds in a month while lying around in somebody’s apartment, they wouldn’t look attractive to women (or to men for that matter.) They’d look like hell, because they’d have had to screw up their system so badly they’d have made themselves sick, and they’d almost certainly have lost muscle mass and muscle tone.

I can’t say for sure if that person is a troll or not, but the stuff they are saying reminds me of personal experiences I’ve had with people who have been in a state of psychosis. It’s not at all unexpected for such a person to have unshakable delusions that someone will let them live with them so they can do a personal makeover and then get a woman to take care of them. It’s certainly true that someone might be doing this as a performance piece, but in case they aren’t, keep in mind that it might be a real person dealing with some mental struggles.

I really doubt this. I have personal experience, I had a psychotic break almost 30 years ago (never to return, fingers crossed), and I’ve read posts here where I immediately thought “oh well, this person is in a state of psychosis”, but not this one. They post like the typical trock, being suspiciously famiilar with board culture and pushing all the right buttons, obviously so.

I saw the OP and my trock-detector pinged at 11. I was depressed that there were 30 messages in the thread.

You can’t spell “gullible” without SDMB.

Well, you can’t spell “gullible” without B.

Most people don’t know that.

I usually don’t comment about who is or isn’t a troll/trock but I thought this one was obvious from the start. He came in very comfortably starting threads he hoped would get a lot of engagement and now has revealed his controversial “story”. He reminds me very much of a recent one who managed to stay around quite a while before he got bored and let himself get outed. I doubt it will take as long for this one to play out.
