Such people should embiggen their knowledge of regional variations. Cromulant is a perfectly cromulent alternative spelling of cromulente in parts of upstate New York. Doesn’t make someone a sock just because they’re not the only one to spell it that way.

For the record, I can’t pick up writing patterns like that. I’m not that clever. There are a few serial sockers that have tells though.
What’s little known is that there was not just one Grapist but a whole bunch.
I’m not that clever either but I identified a couple of socks myself. As you said, some people have tells, which might be writing style, subject matter or just similarities in what they tell about their location and background.

The Grapist was before my time, I only know of them by reputation.
I was curious and did a search. I had assumed this was a character that was around for a while before the mods shut it down. In reality, they were only around for a day: March 7, 2003. That was when the account was both created and blocked.
In its brief run, it posted 28 times and created 2 threads. It was here and gone in a flash. Yet it had such an impact that people are talking about it nearly 20 years later.
I assume that the account was banned because it was spamming the board without any real content, just quoting people and changing the text color in the quote to purple. The name and schtick also obliquely referenced rape, as people were having their words changed to purple without their consent. And that’s at least icky if not flat-out offensive.
I see there was speculation about the account being a sock as well.
I would call it the most successful forum troll I’ve ever heard of. It’s amazing to be around for such a short time and yet somehow literally impact generations.
