Is he being pitted for breaking a rule or just being hyper-conservative?
For stupidity, IMO. We have some hyper-conservative Dopers of long standing but few of them are as impenetrable as Trotsky. Also for consistently and persistently hijacking threads off-topic (and I must plead guilty to rising to the bait; I’m so weak).
Hey, wait a minute. I like him. And I’m Episcopalian. No, seriously, I really do like him. I’m not saying he hasn’t brought me up short a time or two when I had it coming, but the man’s not a hater, and I like him.
I’ve seen more hate-filled posts from that guy than almost everyone else on this board combined. You gotta be kidding. Frankly, I think it’s more an issue of him hating himself, but that’s another story…
William F. Buckley did defend himself in a libel suit by claiming that calling someone a Commie was not an insult. I don’t remember how that turned out. Nonetheless, DerTrihs isn’t, and neither is just about anyone else on the SDMB. Communism is an indefensible and impractical ideology, and a true Communist wouldn’t last long, since he’d have to defend his beliefs.

We used to have Olentzero (perhaps not a card-carrying big-C Communist, but certainly a doctrinaire revolutionary Marxist). None since him, I think.

It’s easy to fall for the bait. I guess I’m chewing on bait second hand for getting into that little debate about Vietnam with you in the GD thread!
I have been a bit of an ass, but overall I do stand by what I say. I understand that this is forum is so left that even cnn seems hard right. I’m basically walking into a mensa meeting where lenin is the lead speaker.
People just hate conservatives and pro-war people here, and that’s just what I am. The shouts and howls are something to really make one think though. The peace crowd is probably more likely to butcher the opposition than my kind. Online and off.
If there’s one thing that drives me nuts, it’s the clique nature of online forums patting themselves on their backs. Especially leftist ones.

If you want a genuine liberal echo chamber, check out Democratic Underground. For a right-wing equivalent, see Free Republic. Spend a day lurking on either and you will see how they differ from the SDMB.
Yeah, at least ones directed toward non-board entities. Mind you, I think the guy is quite smart and knows the difference between facts and assertions (which puts him streets ahead of our friend Trotsky, at least). But for sheer weight of stubborn antagonism…well, let me just say that I was originally a little nervous about entering a thread that contained both Der Trihs and Trotsky, fearing that they might generate a matter/antimatter reaction that would cause the entire board to vanish in a burst of pure mutual antipathy.
Didn’t happen, though. I think the explanation is that Trotsky doesn’t actually have any mass.

Frankly, they don’t all that much. I’m surprised I’ve been allowed to talk this long with my conservative talk, and I’ve been threatened a bunch. This place is very close the Daily Kos/Democraticunderground.
What can you expect really? The net is full of Bush hating leftists. When someone comes along to challenge that, the insults fly..
And this doesn’t hint to you that he may not be too popular IRL? I mean, we are people in real life.
Oh I know. And I don’t like a lot of the things he does, especially his pro-immigration stance.
However, popularity and blind hatred isn’t a good debate tactic. I still support the war in general.
I think once Ari Fleisher left, the Bush team lost their movement. They’ve totally lost the public. However, I don’t think the main things he stands for are suddenly wrong due to public opinion.
Problem is.. He is an actual communist. Now, that may or may not be an insult. That is in the eye of the beholder.

Sigh. The right has fallen a long way from James Burnham, hasn’t it?

Just out of curiosity, is there some kind of corollary to Godwin’s Law regarding calling someone a communist in a web discussion?

Interesting. It appears to me as though the only Moderator warnings you’ve accrued have been from being insulting in GD, not your conservatism. If you’d like to provide a cite showing otherwise? I’d hate to think you were being a sophist.

Yeah, I haven’t seen any evidence of intelligence in Trotsky. He doesn’t seem to be able to tell the difference between being anti-war and being a communist. Sheesh… I’m about as anti-war as they come, but I’ve never been confused for a communist.

That is a very simplistic view of things. One could be anti-war and very pro-communist. One can be anti-communist, and very pro-war. (like me).
I’m not sure I ever made the case that they are somehow involved?

BTW, the actual MP quote is, “Trotsky! My lack of God! It’s Trotsky!” See here, and click on Episode 34: The Cycling Tour.

Brilliant. I have all their collection and didn’t even make the connection.
