The guy who was trying to kill her kind of looked like Terry to me.
Yeah. The main character here is the one the least well-written and least interesting. Even her mental hoodoo is hohum.
That vampire court looked like it was directed by John Carpenter (and I don’t mean that as a compliment - think Ghosts of Mars, Escape LA)
The only story lines I find interesting are Bill’s (just because it explores history and this universe’s vampire rules) and the Jason and Amy’s little Manson Family starter kit.
Meh, my wife has given up on the show and I don’t know if I will watch into a new season. I like it enough though that I got the first three books and am half way into the first one. It’s good. The writing style takes a bit of getting used to, but it is told entirely from Sookie’s perspective with all the other stuff being told to her second hand, so it is still interesting even after having watched many of the events in the show.
My theory as to who the killer is, I think it’s Rene. Based on costumes. The person chasing Sookie was wearing a short sleeved black shirt with white buttons, just like Sam’s (which was dark blue, but I am almost certain the killer isn’t Sam, they are trying too hard to make us think that it is. He is a red herring) The only other person we saw at the party wearing a shirt like that was Rene. If it isn’t Rene I will eat my hat (and spend the time I am eating it cursing the costumer, the continuity person and the director of the episode.)
Yeah, I’m leaning that way, too. Not based on the costumes, though. A couple episodes back, when Sookie and Bill were babysitting, Arlene gave the kids a couple of silver bangles to wear. This struck me as weird at the time, because it’s not really supposed to be common knowledge that silver incapacitates vampires, so why would she think it would help unless she knew more than she lets on?
Whoever the killer is, it has to be someone who is pretty familiar with the bar. The lights were either killed from a central bank of switches away from the kitchen/dining room, or the breakers were flipped. The killer was then able to find his way through the building in the dark to the kitchen, which is fairly simple if you’re familiar with the place but is a right royal PITA if you’re not. Even in the kitchen, he never stumbled or faltered, even when chasing Sookie around the table in the middle of the room. The guy knows the place.
Granted, this could work just as well for the killer to be Terry or Lafayette, even, since they work there and would be intimately familiar with the whole building. But Arlene has worked there for years, and I get the feeling from previous episodes that Rene has helped her finish her side work and such before.
And Rene clearly doesn’t approve of humans dating vampires. He’s not all rude and outspoken like a lot of people in town are, but what do you think that whole conversation when they were dancing was all about? You’re a nice girl, you deserve better–better than someone who is loves and accepts her even when other people think she’s a freak, who will do anything in his power to protect her even at great personal cost to himself? Really? It’s remarkably like the stuff I’ve heard elderly folks say about people dating outside their race.
I think that conversation was a test, myself. A chance for her to mend her ways and save herself. Because Rene really does think she’s a nice girl and deserves better than being choked to death. Maybe Maudette and Dawn got similar chances, but I think it’s more likely that they just weren’t such nice girls.
Yeah, my immediate impression was that it was Rene too, but the above reasoning is way Way WAY too sophisticated for the writers on this show.
But everybody hates vampires. Rene doesn’t seem to hate them any more than than the rest of the townsfolk. And I can’t see Rene killing Gran. There’s a big difference between sleeping with a vampire and inviting one to speak at your church.
But is it too sophisticated for the writer of the book? I haven’t gotten to far into it (like I said I am a little less than half way through) but it seems to me that she is a far better writer than the people working for the show. He dialogue and pacing aren’t as good, but how she reveals the plot, so far, has been much more interesting.
I dunno. My daughter has the first book. Maybe I ought to read it.
I feel like if I were the killer, whenever I was around Sookie I would invariably start thinking about the time I beat her grandmother to death or cut her cat’s head off and tied it to a ceiling fan. And then she’d read my mind. How do you not think about that? So even though I think they’ve been trying too hard to make it look like Sam was the killer, I was hoping he is, since she at least can’t read his mind well. On the other hand I don’t think they’ve ever shown Sookie reading Rene’s mind… have they?
Sookie says she tries not to read her friends’ minds.
But don’t you wonder why she hasn’t used this ability to help find Gran’s killer?
Yep, my wife and I have given up on the series as a huge disappointment, what with the logical inconsistencies and regional gaffes. The biggest disappointment to me has been Anna Paquin, even though I’m normally a fan. Yech.
It’s a damned shame, though. The storyline lends itself to something fascinating.
While I’m liking the show more than a lot of people here, the inconsistency in the mind reading is bugging me. Why isn’t Amy sending out big loads of “Damn, this chick is supposed to be able to read minds — try not to think of the vampire in the basement”, just for one example.
I do wonder! And she did try earlier, actually, to find the killer of the other women. It was the whole point of the trip to Fangtasia. She decides that everyone at the bar is just thinking about sex. Part of me will be annoyed if it turns out the killer is someone she sees every day and could have discovered by reading their mind. If I were Sookie I think I would just run around town asking people if they killed my cat. I bet the killer would slip up and think about how he killed her cat in response. Ok, I might bring Bill with me while doing it.
Aw, y’all are ruining it for me. I was really liking this show, and now that you point out all the problems, I’m starting to thing that I’ve liked it mostly because I happen to be reading Twilight (recommended and lent by a friend), and that is so crappy that True Blood is benefiting in comparison. (Really, I just read this: “my eyes, wide with fright, wouldn’t close. They plunged through the now-black forest like wraiths.” “They” is supposed to refer to the good vampires, but I keep picturing the heroine’s eyeballs galloping independently through the woods.)
You know why I think Rene is probably the killer? Because Arlene just gave that big speech about how great he is. That, on top of him seeming sweet, friendly, and generally a good guy says they must be setting up a reversal.
One thing I do like is Amy’s guilty conscience - she may not be as worried as she should be around a vampire-sympathizing mind reader, but she is taking unrelated comments to be possibly referring to her, like when Sookie complained about people lying to her, or when the vampires said, “We know when someone has harmed one of us.” Her face was priceless when he said that.
Who says it’s all the same killer?
Seriously, Gran (and poor little Tina) didn’t get killed the same way the fangbangers were killed. Dawn and Maudette were strangled, and the thoughts Sookie was getting from the person stalking her in the bar were about strangling. (The flashes were too quick for me to tell if the thoughts were about strangling Sookie, or about strangling one of the other two.) Gran was bludgeoned to death. It doesn’t make a lot of sense for the killer to change from a quiet method with low likelihood of leaving trace evidence on you to one where the victim will likely scream or leave blood spatter on you. Besides, my understanding is that people like that tend to pick a killing method and stick with it, not flip-flop all over the place.
Besides, in terms of dramatic storyline, it’s far scarier to catch the guy who strangled the other 2 women, have everyone think Sookie is safe, and then have someone come after her again. Then again, I probably watch too many horror movies where you think the killer is dead and the heroine relaxes and then…
GOTCHA!
Oh, good call. That would be interesting.
I don’t think it’s Rene b/c they already used him as a red herring - remember the scene with the flat tire when he proposed? They set it up to look like he was going to kill Arlene.
Me, I think it’s Arlene.
And I think its the Iraqi Vet - cant recall his name - based on when he was talking to Sookie, wishing certain dead folks were alive again - something about the way he said it. (I know he was probably talking about either buddies that died in service or a few folks he killed while in, but there was something “else” there).
Also, whomever was doing it appeared to be plenty strong - I dont take either Rene or Arlene to have that strength.
I don’t think it’s Terry (the vet). He seems so easygoing and laid back, and tolerant and sympathetic. I like him more every week.
Whoever went after Sookie, why is he thinking of a previous victim? If I was gonna kill somebody, that’s who I’d have in my mind.
Oh, it’ll be a copout - she can change into a banshee or something.
