I tried to look in at a predominantly right-wing message board to see how posters there were reacting to the debate. I did not wade too far in, so don’t ask for details, but the impression I got was that they know Trump lost, and they don’t like it. Give them a day or two to come up with excuses.
I just want to thank all of you for posting. I couldn’t stand to watch the debate, but reading along here kept me informed, gave me hope, and, a few times, gave me a chuckle. You were simply excellent. If there’s another presidential debate, I’ll do this again. If not, I’ll do it for the VP debate.

Looking at replays of the handshake, note that this was one time when Trump did not try to “win” the handshake. Remember how when he was president there were all those videos of him shaking hands with world leaders and whatnot, where he would grip the person’s hand, then pull the hand toward him, and then hold on to the hand for too long? He didn’t even try to do that with her.
I’m glad we gave you a way to participate that you could stomach! The watch threads are almost always fun and funny (notable exception a couple months ago).

After much internal debate, I watched the debate. I thought Harris did well. Very well.
The one thing that I mentioned to my kids is how in 1992, George W. Bush checking his watch during the debate with Clinton was scandalous. It turned voters off of him. It showed him unconnected to the average American. And now in 2024, we have a clown like Donald Trump bullshit his way through a 90+ minute debate, scream red-faced for a full two minutes about how immigrants are eating our pets, and he’s likely still going to be a coin flip away from the being president again. Interesting times.
The one thing my kids mentioned to me is that I watch presidential debates the same way I watch Lions football games- lots of yelling at the TV and tense body language.
This gives me a tiny bit of hope for the world.

I’m waiting to hear from my Trump cultist friend. (She literally believes Trump was sent by God to Save Us All.) When she does, I’ll remind her that I saw that Biden lost the first debate. If she insists Trump won this debate, I’ll come up with something along the lines of ‘I evaluated the performance, and concluded in the Reality-based world that Biden lost. I had hoped you would have the honesty and moral fortitude to admit that Trump lost this time.’
I don’t know. I guess CNN got the opportunity to interview JD Vance right now, so they took it. Maybe the focus group will be coming up after Vance.
ETA: Just heard that they’re Pennsylvania voters who are undecided. After these important messages (again) …
I think that that would have been difficult. Its not a simple thing to explain why Orban is not a good person, in a quick soundbite. Also he’s a member of NATO so saying having the VP say bad things about him is probably not good for national diplomacy. Probably better to just let is stand and leave the viewers wondering why the heck they should care what the leader of Hungary, of all places, thinks of Trump.
