Can’t remember if there is a thread on this particular bit of Trump and legal issues; not related to the Mar-a-lago saga.
The House committee and Trump have reached a deal on the Committee finally getting access to Trump’s financial records, which they have been fighting in the courts to get since 2019:
“Under the agreement reached by the Committee, former President Trump has agreed not to further appeal the D.C. Circuit’s ruling, and Mazars USA has agreed to comply with the court’s order and produce responsive documents to the Committee as expeditiously as possible,” the press release from the committee said.
My recollection is that a three judge panel of the court of appeals ruled in the committee’s favour. Trump could seek review by the full court, and then could seek cert from the Supreme Court. The Committee presumably wants to get the records before the mid-terms, when the political balance in the House could change, so has likely struck a deal to end the delays and get something.
I don’t see anything in any of that, that gives Trump something so I’d take it that the win for him is that he’s spared from additional legal costs by continuing to fight it.
At this point, he’s probably a lot more worried about law enforcement than Congress and maybe the Committee threatened to open a new suit against him and bump up his legal costs even higher.
It sucks to be Trump right now. As soon as Mazars hands those documents over to Congress, they’re going to be handed over to the media. They’re going to run him through the mud pretty much no matter what’s in there.
A better question would be what do they think they’re going to find in these records that we don’t already know or suspect? Even if it shows Trump Corp. lied and cheated, Trump can claim no knowledge of it and blame somebody else. How will this revelation impact the upcoming election in the House?
We are talking the most thin-skinned person ever born to man and he’s having to choose that over jail - with jail likely to come swallow him up, anyways.
