It sort of parallels how he was already using the whole crisis as as excuse for not being the greatest economic president after all (and actually he isn’t totally wrong about that — I mean, he’s a terrible businessman, and put through bad economic policies, and merely inherited a growing economy, but it is true that most of this year’s downturn wasn’t ENTIRELY his fault).
How do we know he caught it from Hope Hicks? Maybe he just caught it from being tested so often. (Wasn’t he complaining awhile back about how you do all these tests that come back negative and then “something happens” and suddenly you test positive?)
Do we have an “official” word on this from anyone other than a tweet from Trump himself?
Wait a minute. Wasn’t the current occupant of the Oval Office mocking Biden for taking COVID-19 precautions during the run-up to the Democratic party convention?
My first thought was that I hope this is nothing trivial. But then I reconsidered. I don’t want 63M thinking Trump died a hero. So I hope he recovers and lives to die in prison after lengthy trials for various crimes committed in and out of public office.
I’m not convinced it isn’t just clever politicking. He gets sympathy, excuse to get out of debates, doesn’t have to see anybody, can point out his strength and what a hoax it was all along, when he ‘recovers’.
Why on earth would ANYONE believe ANYTHING he says?
Maybe he feels it’s a good time to step off and let Pence face the shit show, take all the heat? It might just rally those republicans that have been disgusted by their president’s behaviour, around a LESS scandalized guy they CAN justify voting for!
His life could (Pretend!) be hanging in the balance as the polls open, that’d rally the base I bet!
This looks and smells like pure political theatre to me.
He’s so successfully discredited everyone, every department in the White House, himself and everyone in his administration, with non stop lying, denying, or retracting his own words, that’s there’s very little indeed, in the name of ‘evidence’ that he could produce that would convince me, to be honest.
His fellows have repeatedly demonstrated they’ll say or do anything for him.
I saw quite a list on MSNBC. The whole first family save Barron, Guiliani, Steven Miller (yay!), Mark Meadows, scary screaming lady Kim Guilfoyle, plus more I don’t remember.
There are a lot of reasons to suspect it might be a hoax; being able to claim a flawless victory over the virus would go a long way towards strengthening his narrative that it’s overblown and harmless.
But I think you’re right. It’s a long-established fact that letting Trump soak in adulation at rallies is the only thing that keeps him happy and manageable for a while - especially in the face of any amount of negative news coverage. Neither he nor his aides would ever give them up willingly.
I just happened to be watching that. Here’s the list.
No one is sure that Hope Hicks gave it to the President though. It’s just that she had symptoms that day. There might be more people in Trump’s and Hicks’ path that gave it to them.
That’s the OTHER young, female, not-white, outspoken, and liberal freshman Representative Trumpers have been whining about since before she was sworn in.
Trump has been like that sergeant rallying his troops while the bullets fly without apparently getting hit himself – conspicuously not wearing a mask when he goes out, and encouraging others to do the same. Of course, he has advantages over that sergeant - as he himself pointed out, he’s at a distance from the crowd, and gets tested frequently. He reminds me of that Gahan Wilson cartoon that shows a WWI general, standing down in the trench while he waves a life-sized mannikin of himself on a stick and saying, to a subordinate next to him “Gives the men no end of confidence”
Of course, there’s always a chance that he could catch it from someone who DID get close to him who happened to be carrying. As the news keeps pointing out every times this occurs, there have been several such occasions. In the present case we know that HOPIX (R) had a case of COVID and got near our Fearless Leader, and might be the cause of his and Melania’s infection. It’s Trump’s General Sedgwick moment.*
It’s hard not to feel schadenfreude at a time like this, but I do honestly not wish him death or suffering on account of this. He has the best care and the best doctors available to him, and that greatly increases his chances. But one positive outcome of this is that Trump and the Republicans had hoped to redirect attention from COVID to something – anything – else. They were working pretty hard on that “Law and Order” angle. But his infection has skewed that pretty thoroughly. Now, for the next few weeks, the question of Trump’s case of COVID 19 is going to be on everyone’s minds, no matter what he says or does. It will affect how he lives and whether he can appear at rallies, and will make everyone think every day about how he’s coping with the infection. And the next couple of weeks are all it takes before the election.
No, I don’t think this is some sort of Trump theater, him pretending to have come down with it to seem more a “man of the people.” Having this draw COVID front and center when he’s been desperately working to shove it away is probably the worst thing that could have happened, in his campaign strategy mind.
*John Sedgwick was the Union general at the Battle of Spotsylvania who famous declared “They couldn’t hit an elephant at this distance,” shortly before being killed by a sniper’s bullet. A good and popular general, he deserved to be remembered for other reasons, but at least this has guaranteed that he will be remembered. He really did say those words, although they weren’t his last (and he wasn’t cut off in delivering the line)
It would be an excellent chaser for the Hydroxychloroqine, especially while sitting on the golden throne, rigged to flash ultra violet, infrared and gamma rays with all 15 flushes.
